I think children should engage in resistance training. I did some research and found that it is both safe and recommended for children to perform exercises that strengthen their muscles and bones, maintain a healthy body weight, increase their confidence and enhance their performance in sports (source). All of these are great results with a clear benefit to the child’s health.
There is more that needs to be said though—while strength/resistance training can be great for kids and lead to a healthy lifestyle, it should be approached with caution, from the angle of overall health and fitness, and teaching children how to grow their muscles safely, not necessarily trying to gain a great deal of muscle mass as is the goal of bodybuilding competitions
Today there is an ever growing debate on whether competitive sports are beneficial or harmful to children. Competitive sports in some cases are becoming very unhealthy for children. Most children would rather play on a losing team than sit on the bench of a winning team. Youth sports are a great idea to get children up and active, as well as improve their social skills. Just like every other thing in life it is important to practice and work hard to achieve success. However it is unhealthy to push for results over the needs or wants of the child. Aside from the mental stress that young athletes may experience from intense training and physical play long lasting injures is now a growing concern. I will discuss with the parents that assessing the biological age and training age will reduce the risk of injury because the maturity assessment helps to determine the fitness level of their children. Also, a complete health assessment will determine their weakness and strengths, as well as contraindications to exercise. The resistance training program will be based on the children’s maturity level, training age, physical abilities and specific goals. I will gradually increase the volume, intensity and rate of progression to reduce the risk of injury and overtraining. Sports today are more common than before in previous years. Having a job in the athletic field requires more to it than just understanding the basics of sports. People are more active which helps play a big role in the athletic field because it requires everyone to be more aware of injuries, and learn how to prevent, treat, and diagnose an injury. Before reading the NSCA article on youth resistance programs, I held the common and incorrect belief that strength training could be detrimental towards children because of an increased likelihood of injury, and it could stunt children’s growth due to bone and connective tissue damage. However, after reading this fascinating article, my beliefs have completely changed. I did not realize how many benefits exist for youth resistance programs. I believe that participating in sports has a much more positive impact on children.
