Response To Ayn's Anthem

Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is a very unique novel. It encircles individualism and makes the reader think of how people can conform to society and do as they are told without knowing the consequences and results of their decisions. Also, it teaches the importance of self expression and the freedom that comes along with being your own person and having the power to choose what path to take in life. Figurative language is used often in this book and in a variety of quotes that have great importance to the theme, plot, and conflict of the novel.

This novel displays exactly what Ayn Rand’s theory of Objectivism does not support in order to expose the weaknesses of her opponents ways and express the importance of self improvement. She puts forth for the reader the faults of a collective minded society as the leaders and society within Anthem attempt to control mans body and mind. Towards the close of the novel, as Equality 7-2521 discovers the sacred word he also comes to understand the perks of self improvement and striving to advance as an individual. Equality is a curious boy who questions the society around him. It is because of his inquiry that he becomes ostracized from society and runs away with his friend. Equality character traits and the advancement of the plot are revealed through symbols throughout the book.Throughout the story Ayn Rand drops symbols that relate to the reveal of his character traits, and advancement of the plot.

In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand the main character, Equality, lives in a collectivist society, but he leaves because he does not agree with these values. Anthem is a prime example of the hero's journey because the novel is very similar to what criteria the hero's journey contains. This dystopian novella deals with authoritarianism as the government has taken control and assigns jobs and duties for every being based on the Council's decision. In the novels Anthem by Ayn Rand and V for Vendetta by Alan Moore, the totalitarian government takes advantage of their higher power to enforce strict obedience on citizens, without concerning for their opinions or wishes and removing their personal freedom, which causes a rebellious protagonist to take charge and struggle to find their freedom.

Everyone is equal to each other; they work and live in collective groups everyone is thought as one. The word “I” makes one an individual, however in Anthem, the word “I” is lost and there is no individual, just the collective people working for a common goal. The reader will either love or hate this book, to people with collectivist ideals it will seem ignorant and boring, to people with capitalist ideals it will seem genius and insightful. It’s anti-communist propaganda; it misleads the people who don’t read to learn, the people who don’t fully understand communism, capitalism, or economics in general. Anthem leads people to believe that communism is inherently authoritarian, when in reality there are different ideologies within the leftist community. I thought the moral of the story is sticking together and staying for a common cause. For example Equality 7-2521 went and read forbidden books that interested him and even though it was a sin he still did it knowing he could get in a lot of trouble for it. I thought in all of these pieces of literature, there is unity in all of them that brings them all together for a cause. I feel such unity is a good meaning throughout all of these pieces of writing.and I believe staying for a cause is essential in real life since if you stick together and stay for a cause is to show something you believe in and will stand up for. Nevertheless, I felt that “Anthem” by Ayn​ ​Rand is fairly plain and didn't have a spark in it that interested me about the
