After watching this movie, I have realized the necessity of responding to Sex trafficking. Lakshmis childhood has been taken from her for the better of the family. A 13 year old girl working as a prostitute is something no one should ever have to endure no matter what the circumstances are. Lakshmi goes from child to adult in an instant. We see how sex trafficking has affected her because when she goes to the doctor for her routine check up, she does not even want to be touched. The evolution of sex trafficking is rapidly increasing due to the reproduction of children within the communities. Girls In sex trafficking often produce children due to the lack of protection, especially within low income countries. If they do not escape, it is likely that the child will also be sex trafficked. We see an example of this in the movie when Mumtaz is admiring one of the girls babies and even asks the mother of she would trade her in. You may be wondering where and why this happens. Trafficking victims usually come from poor less developed countries, such as in India where the movie takes place. This …show more content…
Sexually transmitted disease are everywhere especially when it comes to sex trafficking and brothels. Most people in other counties are not aware of the affects of these sexually transmitted disease due their low level of eduction. One movie example of this is when Monica who lives in the brothel is diagnosed with AIDS. Her lower back was covered with tumors. Unprotected sex with multiple partners is also a factor in the spread of STDS. We see in the movie that they only start insisting that their client wears protection after they find out that Monica has been diagnosed with AIDS. We need to respond to sex trafficking because young children have the potential of getting sexually transmitted disease which could end up being life
Have you ever walked into Wal-Mart and taken the time to look at the numerous pictures of missing youth that is plastered on the wall? When looking at how long they have been missing, it ranges anywhere from months to years. Looking at their age, both boys and girls, it is hard not to wonder if these kids are being trafficked. Child sex trafficking, also known as human trafficking, is a major issue that is not only plaguing the United States, but the world. Residing in a state where teen sex trafficking is very common, it is imperative that not only adults, but the youth understand what child sex/human trafficking is, what is a sex-trafficker, and the data that reveals the seriousness of child sex
Imagine knowing that your parents set you up to be raped, just so they can make money. This violence leads to depression and even suicide, making the children feel extremely weak and empty. Weak law enforcement and poverty has driven sex slavery out of hand. A solution to end this violence begins with people who raise awareness. To raise awareness, it is important to meet with the federal and local government to inform them on the issues and convince them to combat sex trafficking. Come up with different fundraisers for battered victims, host awareness events so people become familiar with the issue, and eventually the victims can become educated and well equipped with the proper care they need. Consider working with different organizations that help women who have fallen victims of prostitution, pornography, trafficking and other forms of sexual violence. Work with a religious community that can help raise money for families in poverty. This can decrease the amount of women and children traded for sex. Internationally, we need to become more familiar with, knowledgeable of, and aggressive to end this suffering of dehumanization and advertise what the poor victims have to face on a daily
When a person thinks of sex trade, or sex trafficking, or human trafficking, they are often not informed of the numbers and rates that this crime is happening in. Looking at how many people have their freedom taken away daily is ridiculous.
In the CNN article: they describe how the girls were forced to grow up: “Geeta was 9 when she began wearing makeup, staying up until 2 a.m. and having sex with as many as 60 men a day” (CNN, 1). At 9 years old, a girl is dressing up, and acting like a women which in the sex trafficking world is no big deal. Many girls continue to be forced to dress how why they have to in order to get the most men and the most money. Geeta is only doing these things because she is being blackmailed into the situation and owes money and the longer she waits and has to be involved in the sex trafficking experience. Lakshmi also goes through having to wear unwanted makeup to get the men to want her: “I’m wiping the makeup off my face when the dark-skinned girl comes in” (McCormick, 105). The search for want from the men is a big struggle in sex trafficking and many girls are forced to go to the extremes to get out the faster without being there any longer than they have to. “The youngest turned out to be a seventh grader from Vietnam three months earlier, making her about 12 years old” (Kristof, 2). Girls are taken into sex trafficking when they are so young and are forced to perform actions that they would usually do as adults and not teenagers Having sex with an abundance of men per day is nothing a young girl should do for a job. In the book Sold, Lakshmi was taken from her home at 13 years old like the girl in the article. They both had to experience things that no girl their age could ever imagine. “The pimp might take a girl across the border in a cycle-rickshaw and put a tikka dot on her forehead so it looks like she and he are married” (Orlinsky, 2). They will do anything to make sure that they don’t get caught because they police our aware of the sex trafficking in the country. The pretend that they are married o it doesn’t look suspicious
When looking for topics to research I wanted to do something that was a prominent problem in my hometown, which was Sex Trafficking (ST). Coming from Houston, Texas, Sex Trafficking is one of the major hubs in the United States. Houston’s main highway I - 10 is the main road used to travel these victims to state lines to get them out of the country. A better definition of sex trafficking is when someone uses force, fraud or coercion to cause a commercial sex act with an adult or cause a minor to commit a commercial sex act. A commercial sex act is a list of things known as prostitution, pornography, and sexual performance done in exchange for any item of value, such as money, drugs, shelter, food, or clothes( United Nations, In the United States alone 14,500 - 17,500 people are trafficked alone in the United States and 46% of it is from Texas. Most cases found on sex trafficking come from Women and Child, but there are a percentage of males that are trafficked, but because the act makes most feel degraded they refuse to report it. The effects it has on victims is indescribable. Many programs were created and people were made available to help victims but still sometimes these victims do not get the closure they need. This topic is important because it is a worldwide social issue that destroys not only the person physically taken into the trafficking but everyone that is involved in saving that person. When choosing these two articles, “Sex Trafficking: Policies, Programs,
Sex trafficking keeps becoming a bigger issue in modern times. More victims are being taken, mainly women and children. In order to be able to help those in sex trafficking we need to help people become aware of the dangerous acts that they create and or cause to a person. Since “Sex trafficking is a fast-growing criminal enterprise. In response, some states are looking for help in combating the trafficking where it’s likely to occur.” (“Sex Trafficking Law Enforcement Task Force Highlighted During National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month”) By giving those in your community the opportunity to help you around your community is something that can definitely change the way things are done. When you're in a community, you are familiar
In the area of human trafficking, many falsely believe this includes only victims brought to the US from other countries. Another common misconception is that children are not often victims of sex trafficking. Creating a broader understanding of what human trafficking is and how sex trafficking affects every region of the United States is instrumental in bringing about awareness, and most importantly change.
It is absoultely unthinkable and heartbreaking to know that sexual slavery occurs in the United States of America. I was astonished when I had first read the article Pair Admit to Keeping Girl ,12,as a slave in Irvine for multiple reasons. One of the major reasons was how close Irvine was to Fullerton and how this young girl was robbed four years of her life because one of her sisters was caught "stealing"(Lin,1) and would have been reported to the "police" if her parents did not send the then ten-year-old over. But, I was more so disgusted at the fact that this was happening right under the our noses. Geographical locations transforms the way we feel towards sexual slavery for multiple reasons. For example, I had been watching a documentary on YouTube about homeless little boys who are raped by other men in random locations. These boys range from ages of eight to at least twelve. Without being exposed to this going situation previously before I would not have really though much of sexual slavery occurring in many parts of the world because they are farther away from the United States.
Sex Trafficking is a global phenomenon defined most often as the trade in women and children using force, fraud or coercion to cause a commercial sex act. Prostitution, pornography and sexual performance that is committed in exchange for money, drugs, shelter, food or clothes is defined as a commercial sex act. Sex Trafficking has a firm grip as a multi-million dollar production, recently skyrocketing with the modern era of technology that allows the business to become even more elusive and harder to track. We’ve all heard of the terminology, but how many of us actually know what sex trafficking entails? January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention
The International Labor Organization estimated that there were 4.5 million victims trapped in forced sexual exploitation, or sex trafficking, globally. Most would believe that this is a problem that does not occur in the United States, but they would be wrong. In 2007 alone, 14,588 sex trafficking cases were reported in the United States and the problem is only getting worse. This research paper will discuss multiple topics such as the definition of sex trafficking, recruitment and those at risk, where it occurs, organizations, consequences, a healthcare provider’s role and a study on the attitudes of the public. The objective is to bring light to this problem and educate those who are reading (Polaris Project, 2016).
Sex trafficking is a public administration problem for a number of reasons. The first being the health concerns. Physician visits increase 56% in sex trafficking victims.
Lakshmi was 13 years old when she was trafficked on the streets of Nepal. During teen years, she was abused and beaten many times. Not only that, but she went through the pain of being lied to and was sold to grown men. During her time working on the streets, she dealt with diseases and illnesses. The job she was being forced to do was called prostitution. In today's world, there are an estimated 42 million prostitutes in the world. Three quarters of that population include women ages 13 to 25. Some women are tricked and forced to be apart from this job. Others do it out of money needs. This topic, is not talked about much on news or media, but still is a serious for many reasons. Although some argue differently,
There is many problems in this world today. One of those problems was unknown to me until I read a report from CNN’s reporter Sarah Sidner who is doing a five-part series on Sex Trafficking called the Freedom Report. In her first installment, she addresses that victims of this heinous crime are getting marked by their traffickers.
Public problems come in all shapes and sizes. A public problem can be as minor as pot holes in the street to as major as human trafficking and everything in between. In what is known as modern slavery, the domestic problem of child sex trafficking in the United States affects 100,000 American children every year. (Tichen, 2014) The problem of child sex trafficking is something that I am very interested in helping to tackle. Recently I had the opportunity to speak with a representative from a local shelter that assists children that have been removed from a sex trafficking situation. This conversation was very eye opening and made me realize how truly huge this problem is. The funding for local non-profit organizations is not optimal and
An article released by the BBC entitled “Horrors of India’s Brothels Documented” brought this shocking global issue to my attention. The article provides information about a young Indian girl who was only 11 when she was sold into sex slavery by her neighbor (who had persuaded her family to let her go with him to Mumbai); she was taken from her impoverished village in West Bangel. Brutally raped the first night she arrived in a brothel, Guddi is only one of 20,000 sex workers in that specific area [Kamathipura] (2013). The article elaborates on the history of sex slavery in India. It points out that laws have recently been put into place against human trafficking. However, the laws are not being strongly enforced due to the sheer number of
