Restraints On Alienation

With in JM. Coetzee novella The Lives of Animals he uses a fictional character Elizabeth Costello as a source of advocacy. He draws us into Elizabeth Costello's own sense of mortality, her compassion for animals, and her alienation from humans, even from her own family. As in the story of Elizabeth Costello continues we further see how Costello's argument is not so much in behalf of animal rights or vegetarianism as it is a polemic against the support that philosophy.

Over the past seven centuries, there has been a change of power triggering the change in values, culture and politics. These changes benefited some people while it isolated, alienated others. This feeling of alienation sparked the flame to various rebellions. In this essay, I am going to argue how alienation, caused by shifts in value, culture and political, caused specific rebellions during the colonial era, the antebellum era, post antebellum and the civil rights movement.

In the passage “A Brave New World,” by Adam Huxley, John the Savage experiences exile when he travels to the civilized world with Bernard Marx. While John is in the civilized world, the separation from his homeland causes him to have alienating experiences. John is seen as an outcast in the civilized world due to his refusal to participate in customs and events that are normal to the citizens. His refusal of protest also makes him appear as an odd person to the citizens, due to the citizens viewing protest as normal. All this makes john feel alienated in the new world.

I have been personally convicted this year about one specific thing. For several years, I have felt like an outcast, a background noise, a misfit. I have allowed these feelings to control how I treat the people around me. I have placed multiple labels on this certain group of people, claiming they were full of themselves, snobby, and prideful. Recently, this has changed. I have learned not to judge said people so quickly, but instead I have attempted to learn their story, to interact with them more, and to accept that I will not have a close bond with everyone.

Our society needs to be aware of social disconnection and alienation due to the increase of technological advances. How do technological advances lead to disconnection and alienation? People can feel disconnected from reality, from themselves, or from other people.
