For me, returning to Nashville has been a long-term goal. In 2010, I left my small hometown in Alabama to attend The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Phoenix, Arizona. During my time there, I became proficient in the technical and business aspects of the recording industry. After completing my studies, I secured an internship at Blackbird Studio in Berry Hill, Tennessee. Months of training and hands-on experience at Blackbird culminated in a decision to settle in the city. Coming to this conclusion was easy. I saw the well-oiled machine that was Nashville’s music industry; I also saw that other cities with comparable industries lacked the hometown feel and Southern hospitality that Tennessee provided. Nashville was the obvious
The province of Quebec has been part of Canada since the very beginning. Quebec, originally a colony of France, is the only province in Canada with a predominantly french speaking population. Quebec is an important factor in Canada's diversity, as the culture in Quebec is vastly different than the rest of Canada. A fact that Canadians are proud of. However, many in Quebec see themselves as too different, in a sense, from the rest of canada, and believe that Quebec should become its own sovereign nation. The political party Bloc Quebecois has been trying to gain independence for Quebec since 1991 (Goldsworthy 10), although unsuccessfully. Canada needs quebec in order to keep the same amount of influence it has in the world,
Today, there are 195 countries in the world, but none of them are as unique as (or even similar to) France. It holds claims to some of the richest traditions and cultural heritages that have ever existed. But, these facts are not even the most impressive thing about this country: its language is way more awe-inspiring. French is the only language that is spoken on every single continent, and it has the capability to bring different countries and the world together.
Robert Altman’s movie Nashville is based on the political, social, and personal problems that our country has to deal with. These problems are rooted in the battle between the need to create some false image of success and the need for truth which is the struggle that exists in every character of this film (except Jeff Goldbloom). To show this Robert Altman takes us through Nashville’s Country Music using political commentary, music and realistically portrayed dialogue to tell the story.
The concept of recognizing Quebec as a distinct society is an idea that has been kicking around for some time, but just what does it mean and what are its broader implications? This paper will examine the origins of the term, what it means, and its historical context. It will then examine rival interpretations of federalism. The essay will conclude with an in-depth examination of the concept's involvement with the failed constitutional accords and the failed Quebec succession attempts.
Alexis de Tocqueville was born on July 29, 1805, in Paris, France. He was a historian, political scientist, and a politician, but he is best known as the author of Democracy in America. He began his political career as an apprentice magistrate, a role he was easily able to enter into due to his father’s role in French government. In the role of apprentice magistrate, Tocqueville witnessed the constitutional upheaval between the conservatives and liberals in France. With the inevitable decline of the aristocratic privilege on the horizon, he began to study the English political development. For Tocqueville, the July Revolution of 1830 and the resulting kingship of Louis Philippe of Orleans helped
The Jesuits attempted to convert the Indians to Christianity and to save them from the fur trappers and their endless shenanigans, and failed.
What did Tocqueville see as the main problems facing democratic societies? Why did he think that America showed them particularly clearly? Do you agree with him?
Since British Settlers took control of Canada from the French, the needs of the remaining French Canadians, or Quebecois, have consequently been overlooked. Several events in Canadian History have resulted in heated feelings between French and English Canadians. Although the majority of English Canadians have tried to reconcile with the French by making numerous attempts to mend the relationship, questions relating to the needs of French Canadians still exists today. Various key sources indefinitely establish that the that the needs of French Canadians were not met, which will be proven through an in depth analysis of Quebecois Nationalism, Heritage Problems in Quebec, as well as impending acts of terrorism in Quebec.
The merging of two separate and distinct groups is what has given Canada its unique cultural identity. While some early politicians believed assimilation was the best approach to building a strong Canada, it became increasing difficult to convince the Quebec francophones that a national identity should take precedence over retaining their unique culture. Opposing viewpoints and different agendas have caused mistrust among the Quebec francophones towards the federal government and mistrust among other provinces towards Quebec. Constitutional amendments have been proposed on a number of occasions and, to date, none have been successfully
picked up a copy of Peter Guralnick’s book, Sweet Soul Music: Rhythm and Blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom. Guralnick’s landmark book, released in 1986, is “A gripping narrative that captures the tumult and liberating energy of a nation in transition.” In the book, Guralnick dedicates eighty of its 353 pages to the history and importance of Stax Records. Though Archer grew up in Memphis, he was unaware of Stax’s South Memphis location, rather he believed it to be at its later satellite location in Midtown Memphis. So, he decided to take a drive to the corner of College and East McLemore in late July. Upon his arrival he became awash with mixed feelings. Happy to still see the Stax building standing but aghast at its
Quebec has played a special role in the French History. In the modern province occupies, many of the land where French settlers that founded the colony of Canada also known as New France that was in the 17th and 18th centuries. The population is predominantly with French-speakers and Roman Catholics, with a large group minority that was Anglophone. The political alienation of Francophones from the Anglophones has been a persistent theme since the late 19th century. The tension was high during the First World War. Historically, the British merchants and the financiers controlled the whole economy and dominated Montreal. During the Quiet Revolution in 1960, much of that changed. Quebec's separatists, calling for an independent nation, gained
French Nationalism has been defined as the collective will of most Canadian Francophones to live as a distinct cultural community, but there are many aspects of the Canadian Identity which come from the manifestation of French Nationalism (for example, a truly delicious and uniquely Canadian food: poutine). Between 1867 and 1945, French Nationalism had important political aspects, as it signified fighting for the recognition of their own culture during and after confederation. The Ultramontanes were one very important political group who fought hard to establish French culture into Canadian society. Ultramontanism is actually rooted in Europe, prevailing during the French Revolution. It became popular in Franco-Canada shortly after confederation
This article discusses how Quebec's Minster of Culture is interested in following France's lead on fighting anorexia. She stated, "It inspires me a lot". Similar to France the Minster would create voluntary charter that focuses on awareness around anorexia and positive body image. The Minster would invite media , advertisers and fashion professionals to further aid in Quebec's plight against anorexia.
As we can see from government statistics website, regular skilled worker program still plays an important role in Quebec immigration program. The number for PEQ is increasing as well. Government of Quebec has also placed requirement on French language and started language programs to help those who have intention to live in Quebec to improve their French. In all, government of Quebec select those immigrants based on labour market need and other humanitarian reasons which will for sure be beneficial to the Quebec economy.
