The Folklore and Traditions of the Revels-Jackson Family Through my interactions with my extended family over the course of this project, it has become evident that there are specific traditions and values that each side of my family holds dear. Despite my premonition that interviewing my family would be a rather simple and straightforward endeavor, getting the information that I was hoping to find from my family has been anything but easy. Both sides of my family certainly have some common values and traditions between them; however, each side has its own distinct folklore and values that have been instilled over several generations. These traditional family values have come to be one of the most notable differences between the two halves

As I embarked on this assignment I was unsure how to begin and what stories to tell. I did not know if I should commence with how my family came to America, my family tree, or a fascinating story about how my grandparents met. In order to complete this assignment I convened with my grandfather, Earl W. Stafford Sr., who knows a lot about our family history, to learn as much as I could.
Although the “Age of Jackson” wasn’t a time era, which brought forth a great political, social, or economic freedom and equality to the U.S., it did in fact put our country through a metamorphosis in our political lives of the nation. The start of a new presidency (Jackson’s presidency) was accompanied by huge numbers of Hickoryites (Jacksonian supporters) and official hopefuls. Many of these hopefuls were granted their desire of holding office, which is one of the changes brought into Washington by Andrew Jackson.

Many cultures have certain traditions that are very important to them. For example, the Hmong culture has a tradition about marriage. When a Hmong man wants to get married and start a family, he has to ask two specific men called “Mekoob”, to go with him to his women’s house and formally ask the parents for their daughter’s hand in marriage. They later talk about the wedding plan and the price for everything. The husband and his family have to pay for all the expenses.

Abigail Hill wrote a paper on the influence her mother, Juanita Ray Hill, had on their family and the family rituals that she implemented. By analyzing the Hill family rituals, I have been able to also analyze the rituals I want for my future family. Creating a good home environment is essential to individual and family development and growth. Some of the family rituals from the Hill family I want to include in my family and some others I do not want to include. I want a home environment that of teamwork, responsibility, love of God, and appreciation for nature. The best way to promote these family values is to have rituals that teach and promote them.
There is an old African saying, “when an elder dies, it is as if an entire library has burned to the ground.” This happens to be the case when it comes to my family history. Unfortunately, my grandparents on both sides of my family have past away and the rest live across the world which can be difficult to contact. My parent’s are going to be my sources for this assignment. They both have provided me with information about their childhood and the lives of my grandparent’s. By using the stories provided from Deborah A. Miranda’s book Bad Indians, I will compare and contrast the lives of my family to hers.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s Motown released a new band called the Jackson 5. The band consisted of brothers Jermaine Jackson, Randy Jackson, Tito Jackson, Jackie Jackson, and Michael Jackson. They grew up and started their band in Gary, Indiana. Their father Joe Jackson was their manager, he was a “stern temperamental disciplinarian”. It was also his idea to get his kids into music because one day Joe came home and noticed that the boys where stealing his guitar and playing it without permission. However, he then realized his sons had serious talent, and from that day on he trained them.

Throughout this interview process, it was extremely difficult to find a family not similar to mine. However after many weeks of searching, I found a wonderful family that lives not to far from my hometown, the Lindsay family. While interviewing this family, I spent approximately four hours at their small home in Lake City, TN. This experience was difficult and rewarding at the same time. To me, meeting new people is very hard because I am a really shy person. However, I strived to gather a lot of information from this family because it is very important to get a lot of details. So, therefore, this paper will explain my own family, the Lindsay family, and the comparison amongst our families.
