Silence is an important factor in life and can be encountered in different ways, silence can be seen as peace, harmony and can also be viewed as a negative effect such as depression, sadness or even as evil. Silence also gives time to reflect on life and society and when silence there is time to reflect on faith and religion, this would allow to decide on or question religion. When silence is demonstrated it implicates the importance of peace and the chance for revival.
Ellie Wiesel wrote Night to be a chronicle of his young adulthood in the Holocaust. In the events Ellie witnessed and wrote about, the reader can learn much about the atrocities the Nazis committed, in simple words; with far more meaning. The passage on page 22 conveys much of the hardships he faced and show great examples of the deeper meaning in his writing.
In the novel “Night”, author, Elie Wiesel uses imagery to share his experiences as a jew during the holocaust. Wiesel’s use of imagery helps demonstrate the tone and purpose of the entire novel. Elie Wiesel’s journey starts off subtle but in the end leaves the reader heartbroken. Throughout the story, Wiesel describes his tragic memories during the nazi concentration camps, which establishes a dark and somber tone. His descriptions and use of imagery creates the tone and purpose of “Night”.
Elie would have that feeling in the future, being that the liberation was coming soon, so he will be able to catch up with other people that would be liberated with him. Before liberation would happen, the resistance movement in the camp decided to act and fight the remaining SS in the camp. By the afternoon of that day, all of the SS had left or was dead. In the light of the resistance taking over the camp, “Around six that day, the first American tank was at the front gates of Buchenwalden” (Wiesel 115). Thankfully, no additional lives would be lost in order to liberate the prisoners. Three days after the liberation, Elie became ill with some form of poisoning. From there, Elie was transferred to a hospital going back and forth from life and death like his father in his last days. Elie ends the book in such a symbolic way that will make the reader remember that the Holocaust made such an immense impact that Elie will not forget how he looked in the mirror afterwards, “From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me never left me.” (Wiesel 115).
By undergoing the torture, they are pushed to the limits. Elie and his father shared a distant relationship and lacked of support. Their relationship went from an imperfect relationship to a strong bond. Their bond strengthen when they had to rely on each other for comfort. The father and son relationship displayed, “Elie Wiesel Night” symbolizes the need for human contact, a strong reliable faith and the important family bond.
* “I shall never forgive myself. Nor shall I forgive the world for having pushed me against the wall, for having turned me into a stranger, for having awakened in me the basest, most
Elie Wiesel uses extended metaphor in his memoir Night to show a time where there is suffering, death, and when terrible things happen. After Wiesel describes how Madame Schächter was calm during the day, Wiesel states, "As soon as night fell, she began to scream: "There's a fire over there! " She would point at a spot in space, always the same one." (Page 24) Wiesel uses the word night to show a time with suffering, death, and terrible things when he said that Madame Schächter got visions of fire as soon as it was night and not during the day, and this shows that night has suffering because Madame Schächter was suffering from her visions and terrible things because fire can be terrible by causing death.
Eliezer’s lost of hope in Gods existence and his justice is a major theme in the book Night. At the beginning of the book, his belief in God is outright. Eliezer cannot imagine living without his strong beliefs and daily prayers. When Eliezer is asked why does he believe in God, he answers, “Why did I pray? ...
People are sponges. They absorb the light or darkness around them. They choose which to retain, to make a part of themselves. After long enough, it leaves a stain that determines future actions. In the novel Night, Eliezer Wiesel describes his experience as a Holocaust survivor.
In Night, Elie Wiesel presents the harsh, cruel world that surrounds humanity and which is often times not thought to be evil. Night makes us realize nighttime is no longer a time of peace but is filled with fear and nightmares that can not be removed. Every Night in Auschwitz and Birkenau, death lingered in the air as well as memories of family and friends. Taken away in a small compact cattle car during Passover, the Wiesels and other Jews had no idea what awaited. No one realized they were headed towards their death. Elie like others lost most of his family and dreams except for his father and his faith in God. Though the Holocaust brought so much agony, it also brought some realization of what really mattered in life and what people need to hold on to. In Night, Elie Wiesel uses diction, symbolism, and imagery to show the challenges faced between God and his follower.
It is amazing how easily one can use his or her power to destroy communities, families, and lives to accommodate to their beliefs and ideals. In response to Elie Wiesel, human lives are no doubt priceless because one can never replace another life after it has been lost. It has come to my attention that Elie’s quote is based on his experience of seeing the lives of his fellow ethnic group members being eradicated for a superficial ideal; moreover, I strongly agree what Elie is conveying in his words. No matter what complication violence should never be the answer, but when one is forced back against a wall then there has to be self defense whether it is a bully at school or a psychopath who planned a genocide that killed millions of people. At that moment is when all humans should pay attention to the matter.
“For the first time, I felt anger rising within me. Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank Him for? (Pg. 61-63) I think this is the most significant passage in “Night” because Eliezer’s entire life he always praised God and loved him for protecting him but the when he was sent to a Concentration Camp all of his love turned into hate because Eliezer felt like God stopped caring about him; The Concentration Camp took away Eliezer’s means of living.
