Aristotle once said “we make war that we may live in peace.” That is true. All wars have been fought because people feel that peace has been lost, and they want to obtain it. Whether it be about land, rights, religion, or government; people fight for peace. Edwin Starr’s song lyrics are wrong, because war can be beneficial. The benefits to war are that it frees people from oppression and gives the country and soldiers a unifying ideology and a sense of national pride.
War has freed oppressed people and allowed them to feel a sense of pride about where they are from and how they got there. The Revolutionary War is a key example of this, the colonists felt violated and that their government was oppressing their natural rights. They fought with everything they had to break away, and the country became the United States of America. Today, people from the United States are very proud of what the colonists accomplished. They allowed America to be free, and to become great. When war allows people to form a better government, it is very beneficial. Without the Revolutionary War, America would not be America, and therefore it would never have become the world leader it is today. War has also saved people. In both Mr. Herrman’s speech and Walter Dean Myers's book Fallen Angels, the importance of “brotherhood” is seen. Mr. Herrman broke down and cried when he told of his men being killed. He was not just looking out for himself in the war, he was looking out for his men. In Fallen Angels, Perry thinks back about his squad and how “I just wanted God to care for them, to keep them whole. I knew they were thinking about me and Peewee” (Myers, 309). That shows the bond that these complete strangers make when they train and fight
