Rhetorical Analysis: Is Google Making USupid?

Is Google making us stupid? That is a fascinating question with a not so simple answer. Nicholas Carr does a fantastic job of expressing his skepticism about Google; However, he does not bring much in the way of facts, uses broad speculation and relies on a few thoughts of others to bring his skepticism to light. Carr is not very convincing in his manner of trying to reach the rest of the world with his message that Google is hurting us rather than helping us.
Carr attempts to get all of us who read this to really think about this by stating “Over the past few years I’ve had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprogramming the memory” (2). He goes on to say that he doesn’t feel like that his brain is working as well as it used to, and attributes it to constant use of the internet. Understandably, most people use the internet more in this day and age, and it can very easily be assumed that this technology is hurting us in some way. Even Clive Thompson said “We're running out of memory. I don't mean computer memory... No, I'm talking about human memory, stored by the gray matter inside our heads. He mentions that others he has talked to that are the literary type, have noticed some of the same situations going on (5). He also makes mention of a pathologist who blogs about computer use and medicine, who states, “I now have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or in print... Even a blog post of more than three or four paragraphs is too much to absorb. I skim it” (6).
