Luis Valdez in the satirical drama “The Buck Private”, portrays Death as a character and narrator telling the story of a stereotypical family from the 1960’s with a son who is to be drafted to Vietnam. Valdez supports his depiction by having Death narrate the story of Johnny the son, Death reveals in the beginning of the story that Johnny dies in the end. Valdez wants to inform the readers the dangers of war by adding satirical and dramatic effect. Valdez writes in a humorous tone for his tone for his young adult audience to learn what war does. Johnny is not a tragic hero, because; he only wants benefits from enlisting, and he is an irresponsible person inconsiderate of his family’s feelings; he also isn’t special he died like so many others, very stereotypical. Johnny is not a tragic hero, because he only enlisted to receive benefits, and a tragic hero makes sacrifices without wanting anything in return. In the beginning of the play while Johnny is heading to Cecilia’s house to pick her up; he thought to himself in response to Cecilia’s parents thinking he’s a good for nothing, “Maybe they’ll feel different when I come back...sure, the war veteran!....and come back with a ton of medals.”(Valdez 629); he wants respect, and that is not heroic. Johnny is using his enlistment in order to gain respect from others. This scene shows how johnny would think of himself instead of what his girlfriend and her family would think.
