Richard Carver’s “Cathedral” focuses on the dealing and overcoming of predispositions. On a more critical accord, “Cathedral” exemplifies the testing journey of marriage. Carver reveals the reality of close outside friendships impends on marriage through unsettling insecurities, conflicting emotions, and ultimately leading to betrayal.

As we call can testify, an individual reacts significantly drastic when invaded on their personal “bubble,” if you will. So for the narrator, his home is his bubble that Robert has imposed on. Yet to my surprise, Carver depicts the narrator stricken with misconceptions and ignorance about the blind. A great example is when the narrator, maliciously passes judgment about how Robert looks and action compared to his idea of what a blind man should reflect; from his smoking habits, protective glasses, and even his cane was not spare with his harsh tongue. Thus, allowing another man and blind at that, that has an extensive history and quite the uncomfortable playful intimacy with his wife that simply is unacceptable. As most obvious to the eye, critics acclaim Carver’s work to demonstrate overcoming prejudice, yet with the rather dramatic story line the work‘s message on interpersonal relationship and marriage is almost obsolete. It is worthy to recognize the efforts he displays on the essence of marriage and its ongoing challenges with third parties that will ultimately lead to the success or demise of the relationship; a testimony that any social being can relate to. Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” is a story about a nameless man, who is the narrator, his wife, and his wife’s friend Robert. Robert is a blind man that his wife met many years ago while working in Seattle when she was married to her first husband. In the story “Cathedral”, the narrator doesn’t admit it but he is jealous of the men from his wife’s past, such as her ex-husband and Robert. The narrator is also narrow-minded towards the blind community and towards his wife’s feelings towards her friend’s visit. The narrator can see perfectly, but the absence of his own self-awareness and insight makes him blind in many ways, especially when it comes to his own life and his marriage.
Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” is a short story that unfolds through the perspective of Bub. The story begins by depicting Bub’s narrow mindedness and as the story progresses it becomes clear that his perspective shifts after an encounter with his wife’s blind friend Robert. It is through this encounter that Bub has an epiphany. It is his jealousy towards Robert and intoxication that debunk his preconceived notations and highlight the connection between him and Robert. It is only after his epiphany that he is drawn out of this obliviousness and gains insight. Bub’s wife, his smoking, and drinking are key elements in breaking apart his bias and as a result he is enlightened.
In Raymond Carver's "Cathedral," the husband's view of blind men is changed when he encounters his wife's long time friend, Robert. His narrow minded views and prejudice thoughts of one stereotype are altered by a single experience he has with Robert. The husband is changed when he thinks he personally sees the blind man's world. Somehow, the blind man breaks through all of the husband's jealousy, incompetence for discernment, and prejudgments in a single moment of understanding.

This seems to unsettle the husband, as he notices that his wife has a stronger connection with Robert than they have in their marriage. The husband is blind to his wife’s feelings and needs in their relationship, and this lack of communication between them has affected their marriage. His wife wrote a poem about her experience with the blind man touching her face, and he brushed it off by stating that, “[He] can remember not thinking much about the poem” (33). The blind man however acts as an outlet for the wife to vent about her feelings which forms a close bond between the two. Robert can understand the speaker’s wife in a way that the speaker clearly is not able to. The narrator mentions that he believes Robert’s wife, Beluah, must have led a miserable life because she, “could never see herself as she was seen in the eyes of her loves one. The story opens with the narrator giving a background of his wife and Robert. Immediately, it is easy for the audience to form a negative opinion about the narrator. Within the first paragraph of the story he says, “I wasn’t enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me” (Carver 33). This exemplifies his pre-formed opinion about Robert even though he hardly knows anything about him. He clearly is uncomfortable with the fact that Robert is blind, mainly based on his lack of exposure to people with disabilities. The narrator is very narrow-minded for most of this story, making it easy to initially dislike him.
Marriage is a full-time job on its own and people should communicate with each other in order to have a healthy marriage for them to love and appreciate each other so they can grow old together. Most of us know by now that the fairy tale happily ever after stories are full of holes. Carver emphasizes that when there is no communication in the marriage the wife starts to feel unhappy and frustrated with him. The wife’s attitude with her husband suggests that the marriage doesn’t seem to be working for her. Carver states, “My wife finally took her eyes off the blind man and looked at me. Simply from word choice, we learn that the narrator is prejudicial towards others, and jealous of other men's relationships with his wife. When facing the situation of Robert coming to town to visit his wife, the narrator blatantly expresses that "a blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to" (Carver 209).
