Throughout the revision process, I had the opportunity to discover my voice as a writer and engage in the conversation that is academic writing. In my final paper, I tried to reinforce the idea of a roadmap to guide my reader along my thought process. During my Embedded Writing Consultant appointment, I walked through the guidelines of a roadmap with Amarachi, and she emphasized the importance of a roadmap in reorganizing my paper. I realized that I could clearly articulate what I wanted to state by explaining it to her out loud, but when I translated such ideas to my paper, the main point oftentimes became lost. You mentioned something similar in your feedback, as many of the points I made did not connect to my central claim. Recognizing that I needed to emphasize my plan and then carry it out, I rewrote my paper with this in mind. …show more content…
The article we read in which the topic sentences connected to form one coherent idea inspired me to apply this to my own writing. I rephrased my topic sentences in an attempt to make them all relate to one another and the greater central claim. Thus, the basic structure of my paper involves defining the three spheres of evidence in the juvenile justice system (neuroscientific, social, and historical) in the introduction, and then opening each separate paragraph by stating the specific reason of interest. The conclusion ties these ideas together once again. Lastly, when you read my paper, you remarked that it seemed more like a “book report” than a discussion between authors. In my final paper, I tried to facilitate a conversation between my sources by adding my own analysis and expanding upon each
In our reading (Juvenile Justice in America) it talks about a 1992 survey of law enforcement department’s product by G. David Curry and colleagues’ it says “the seventy-nine largest U.S. cities, 91 percent of respondents reported the presence of gang problems. These researchers estimated that there were 4,881 gangs with 249,324 gang members” and it also states “that juveniles made up 90 percent of the gang membership.” There have been seven stages identified for these emergent gangs with stage one being implementation. That is were gang leaders go to a new city to recruit juveniles to sell drug for money. They go into the low-income minority neighborhood where they promise their recruits protection and part of the profits from the drug sells.
Placing a juvenile in a detention center early in the court process increases the risk that youths will be found to be delinquent and damage their prospects for future success. A majority of the youths that are placed in these facilities pose little or no threat to the public and essentially do not need to be there. This portion of the juvenile court process is detrimental to the future and mental aspects of a youth’s life. We desperately need to change the way that we handle the juvenile court system because we are only reinforcing the delinquent behavior that these youths have been exposed to. We need to focus on the rehabilitation and prevention efforts for these youths not the punishment aspect and until then (insert a better ending).
It has been one hundred years since the creation of the juvenile court in the United States. The court and the juvenile justice system has made some positive changes in the lives of millions of young people lives over the course or those years, within the last thirteen years there has been some daunting challenges in the system.
Juveniles at CCJTDC are also not given the opportunity to exercise the third central human capability. It is evident they do not have the ability to move freely from place to place, and as mentioned before, are not secure against violent assault, including but not limited to sexual assault. One can argue that the general public is not guaranteed safety, and question why deviant misbehaved children should be protected from it. Although it is true children that have violated the law should not be rewarded, it is troubling for this to occur in a government run center. America is not a nation that supports abusive government authoritative figures over its people. Even given the circumstances, human dignity must still be maintained. The promotion
The juvenile justice system has long been in debate over whether its focus should be rehabilitation or punishment. From its birth in the early 20th century, the juvenile justice system has changed its focus from punishment to rehabilitation and back many times. Some say the juvenile justice system should be abolished and juveniles tried as adults, yet studies indicate punishment and imprisonment do not rehabilitate juvenile offenders; therefore, the juvenile justice system should remain
There many things that the state of Illinois has done that they claim they were the first in the nation ever do, we had the very first skyscraper in the world, we had the first deep dish pizza and we also elected the very first African-American president of the United States. One of the other things at the state of Illinois was first and is we were the first state in the entire nation to have a juvenile court unlike the other first that I mentioned this one seldom ignites a passionate discussion or even impresses many people, the very first juvenile court in America was founded in Cook County in 1909 soon after the rest of Illinois and then the nation implemented very similar courts. These courts were first designed to help wayward use find
Juvenile Justice Centers are secure prisons or jails for minors under the age of 18. Many say they do not help and potentially lead to a more damaged teen who was better before getting in there, but is this really the case? Some of these facilities have great programs that can teach these minors how to act and have a good character when they get out. Juvenile Justice Centers are beneficial to the inmates because they can teach important character traits and sets the inmates up for a future most thought were not reachable in the first place.
Are juvenile justice centers are beneficial for troubled teens? Well I agree that juvenile justice centers are beneficial for troubled teens for many reasons, here's a couple .First, teens are young adults and they are suppose to make mistakes so that they can learn from them. Secondly, some teens don't have parents to show them what is good and what is bad. lastly, our teens are the future of this word so we need to get them ready. Let me break it down a little more for you. First thing's first, Teens are young adults and they are suppose to make mistakes so that they can learn
The Tampa Police Department is always supportive of Juvenile Justice Reform that is meaningful and impactful in the lives of youthful offenders. We have led the effort to keep youth from receiving criminal records for minor misdemeanor crimes through the use of the Juvenile Arrest Avoidance Program (civil citation). We have been on the forefront of reducing school arrest by directing officers to allow the school system to handle minor offenses that occur on campus rather arresting the youth. We are continually reviewing our policies to ensure that any arrest made is necessary.
The juvenile justice system is imperfect, at best, and part of this stems from the fact that juvenile justice, as a specific, discrete category of crime and punishment is still a relatively recent phenomenon. In fact, the notion of childhood and adolescence as distinct phases of human development is a novel idea that did not truly emerge until the twentieth century, so it is only natural that some elements of the juvenile justice system seem to have been made up they went along. Now, however, after substantial research into juvenile delinquency, it causes, and potential solutions, a much clearer picture of the phenomenon is emerging that will allow parents, teachers, legislators, and law enforcement officials to better reduce juvenile delinquency without imposing unnecessarily harsh restrictions of juveniles. By examining the history of the juvenile justice system alongside more recent research into juvenile delinquency, it will be possible to see how the most effective treatments going forward will likely focus on reducing risk before delinquency occurs and rehabilitating juveniles already in the justice system, as opposed to more punitive measures that mark juveniles as a criminal and thus hinder them for the rest of their lives.
Reforming Juvenile Justice Law is the topic, which handles the treatment of children (under 18) who are in conflict with the Penal Code or vulnerable because they are at odds with the Penal Code and addresses the root causes that have made or offered to children to be in conflict with the law essentially. Today, the court system in this nation is partitioned into two gatherings when looking at juveniles and adults. One is the Adult Criminal Justice System, and the other is the Juvenile Justice System. The wording can be altogether different between the two systems. Case in point; if an adult is captured, they will be liable to a safeguard hearing. On the off chance that a juvenile is captured they should experience a detainment hearing. Adults
There are many known, crooked, twisted ways of our juvenile system. So many young children getting their lives destroyed and ruined all because of our juvenile system. This Problem became noticed in 1960 when a 15 year old boy got arrested and had a life changing, ruining, experience all because of a prank phone call. In 1967 the supreme court finally tried to resolve this problem and bring justice to all children, but fixing it wasn't going to be as easy as giving childrens, teens, rights to a lawyer, and no double jeopardy. In the late 90s and early 2000s over 200,000 children were tried as adults, children getting the death penalty and getting life in jail without even chance of parole. There was even a
On June 25, 2012, the Supreme Court spoke that juveniles who committed a serious crime such as a murder could not be sentenced to life in jail. This all due to the Eighth Amendment on cruel and unusual punishment. The Juvenile justice system has caused controversy since then about to sentence minors to life sentence or not. There are many sides and strong opinions about it. Many authors concerned about Juvenile justice agree or disagree about minors treated into an adult justice system. The argument has targeted young juveniles such age as seventeen to be treated as an adult or to be still treated as a minor. My opinion about this controversial issue is to treat these juveniles as adults but trial them as actual adults until they have reached
This week’s article focuses on the urgent need for juvenile justice reforms. Maryland lawmakers are questioning whether they should withhold $1 million from the juvenile justice system. These inquisitions over budget allocation resulted from the harsh treatments towards juvenile offenders. For instance, some Juveniles are subjected to strip searches and shackles. The new legislation would rid the Department of Juvenile Services from physically restraining young offenders. Furthermore, the uses of physical restraints on juveniles have been proven to be counterintuitive. Cruel punishments such as shackles counter the notion of rehabilitation. Research suggest that Juveniles that undergo harsh treatment tend to develop ruthless behaviors. In Baltimore,
When thinking of reforming the juvenile justice system one has to think; what can we do to make this better for everyone involve? There are some programs that can be implemented when trying to make a change in the juvenile system. The main thing is getting parents or the guardian more involved in the child’s whereabouts. Secondly the community where the youth will have a place to go and have something more constructive to do to keep them out of trouble. Law enforcement can get involved in giving ride along and having visits to the local jails or prisons from the youth to talk to some of the inmates. Crime in life isn’t racist at all it has a no age limit, no certain gender and no social status for most of those whom decide to partake in a criminal activity. From the beginning juveniles have been an issue with law enforcement, the question has always arisen of whom will take control without cruel and unusual punishment and assist with the rehabilitation and prevention future crime actions.
