Rob Elliot’s Ethics Rob Elliot, who had worked at the MGM resort international for a total of fifteen years as Vice President accomplishing many things. He had come up with the design of the license plate that says, “Welcome to Las Vegas” which is seen all around town here in Vegas. Before Rob had come to the MGM he had worked for the government. Elliot had come to our class last week to talk about the importance of ethics. Ethics and character are what were made up of, and why it is an important part in the hospitality as well as the hotel industry. Who you are as a person can come along way, not just in school but in life as well. Ethics is considered a reality check, but overall having an experience is a key component. With ethics you must know the difference of good and bad vs. right and wrong. Rob Elliot discussed what the Headline Rule is and its importance. The Headline Rule is having a positive reputation of the company, and not doing something that puts the company on the front page of a paper or headline in a negative way. People believe that being on the front page of the news is always a positive thing, but in some cases that could not be true in the hospitality world. When you work for a company, you represent them on the clock as well as off the clock. You must think to yourself about your actions and what effect they might encounter at that moment or in the long run. Rob Elliot said he believes that once your integrity is gone, you have nothing left at
The life of a person may be measured in years, moments, and the number of laughs or cries but what if one were to measure a life on good deeds or on that person’s virtues? The theory and idea of ethics and virtue as conceptualized by the Greek philosopher Aristotle in Nicomachean Ethics and as it is expressed in the pages of The Fundamentals of Ethics by Russ Shafer-Landau is a complex and dubious notion. It is one that is easily related to characters in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner.
Yes, the information in the headnote describing the author's, Michael Dillingham, qualifications persuades me to side with his opinion. Why? Simply because he is a well-educated individual. Furthermore, he has most likely spent many hours looking into the dangers of steroids and other substances abused by athletes. Personally, I believe that the term "applied ethics" means that a person holds their self to a certain moral standard every day of their life. It implies that the audience has certain moral standards since they are visiting a website that is devoted to "applied ethics". When the author says, "the inmates are running the asylum", I believe he means that these athletes can do whatever they choose to do. Michael Dillingham, the author,

Chapter eleven of James Svara “The Ethics Primer” was the conclusion to the book and explained to the reader the duties of a public administrator. The jist of this chapter was to help the reader identify and clarify, for anyone who was still confused, what a public administrator was, and how they should conduct themselves. As we read the first three page we are given a list of eleven duties a Public Administrator must abide by. As you read on Svara bangs it into your head just how important acting in an ethical manner is. He explains how someone is an ethical administrator is one who does their duty. The last paragraph wrapped it all up for us when Svara explains how unless a Public Adminstrator is passionate about serving the community in
When you, the Regional Manager, is looking for the perfect candidate to take the position of Assistant Regional Manager of a multinational paper company you want the best available candidate. You want the individual who is most qualified based on education, and with the greatest amount of experience in the area he will be specialized in. Not only that, but you want someone who also has a good personality and is going to be a strong attribute to the company. However, your way of thinking changes when you are thinking as an act utilitarian. Thus, you want to hire the individual whose life will produce the highest amount of well-being and happiness based on your action of hiring that individual. In this instance, Jim should get the position as Assistant Regional Manager over Dwight. Jim getting the position would produce the highest amount of happiness based on your action taken at that moment.
Wonderful, short, summary of the views applicable to this case, and the defense for the view that you hold most. However, I believe that there is more to the Christian-principle based view of ethics, than what you give credit for. According to Arthur F. Holmes’ book, Ethics: Approaching Moral Decisions, one would find that the Christian view holds four tenants, or ideas, to shape the understanding of ethics, in which these views are: cases, area rules (moral rules), principles, bases (theological and philosophical). Thereby, one must go through these four sets of criteria to figure out if an action is right or if it is wrong. Following this line of logic, and if one were to look in the Bible for the answers, one would find torture is not right.
He has gained a lot of experience throughout his career thus far, and is looking forward to expanding his knowledge in the future. Dr. Lind believes that there are many ethical issues that involved in anthropology and the entire Code of Ethics is of importance. However, he believes it is key for practicing Anthropologist’s to understand not only their own Code of Ethics but any Code of Ethics that may be relevant in their currently work place. In addition, he placed a lot of emphasis of informed consent and not harming your subjects during research studies.
Business ethicist Kirk Hanson says that “ethical dilemmas are inevitable,” occurring more in the first year as a professional than in succeeding years (Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, 2011, 0:55). As a business professional, it’s very likely that I will face an ethical dilemma, or even multiple ethical situations throughout my career. This is why, as Hanson explains, “you need to be aware of what your own values are” when confronting ethical dilemmas (Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, 2011, 1:15). It’s important for me to know my own values because they will provide a foundation for my decision making when involved in an ethical conflict.
Morals are infrequently conflated or mistook for different methods for settling on decisions, including religion, law or ethical quality. Numerous religions advance moral choice making yet don't generally address the full scope of moral decisions that we always come across. Religions might likewise advocate or deny certain practices which may not be viewed as the correct area of morals, for example, dietary confinements or sexual practices (K.A. Francis, Demand Media, 2014). A decent arrangement of law ought to be moral, however, the law sets up a point of reference in attempting to direct all inclusive rules and is subsequently not ready to react to individual connections.
From examining both ethical statutes, therapists can take it one step forward by taking ownership in violating the bond between therapist and client. Years of education, training and personal responsibility should prevent therapist from violating the bond between client and therapist. Clients entrust therapist with intimate details and instill trust in the therapist. This relationship can sometimes cross boundaries and cause the client to view the therapist in a different light. The same can be said of therapists who have gained the admiration and trust of their client. This places them at an unfair disadvantage and gives them the upper hand and a manipulative stance in entering any relationship outside of the proper scope of the therapist-client relationship.
“Great individuals have great ethics and great values.” Ethics and morality can be used interchangeably as they sound as if they mean the same although there is a wide distinction between them. “Strictly speaking, morality is used to refer to what we would call moral standards and moral conduct while ethics is used to refer to the formal study of those standards and conduct. For this reason, the study of ethics is also often called moral philosophy." (Gordana D 2007)
Ethics oftentimes determines what is right and what is wrong. It is a moral code that determines values, morals, standards of behavior, principles, and ideas (“Ethic,” 2012). After careful review of the results achieved from the Ethics Awareness Inventory and Ethical Choices, decisions were made that helped to determine my ethical perspective. I will explain the role of ethics and social responsibility in developing a strategic plan, considering stakeholder’s needs. Also, I will explain how my ethical perspective has evolved throughout the course of my MBA program here at University of Phoenix.
The long-standing debate on ethics is far from being solved; however, two philosophers have formulated their own theories in determining whether an action is good or bad. John Stuart Mill focuses on a utilitarian perspective and utilizes the idea of consequentialism and on the other hand, Immanuel Kant avoids the consequentialist argument and supports a deontological perspective in analyzing morality and ethics. Both arguments, valid as they may be, strongly contradict one another, mostly on the basis that Kant and Mill look at very different parts of the equation. Both thinkers appeal to a sense of rationality in their reasoning to differentiate right from wrong; however while Mill’s consequentialist theories are valid under certain
On August 18, 2015 Police officers pulled over a car that was speeding and running red lights. When the car was stopped the officers found a women about to give birth on the passenger side of the vehicle. The police officers were deemed heroes for their efforts in delivering the unborn child. Reading through chapter 2 of The moral of the story: An introduction to ethics (7th ed.) it briefly goes over the idea that people have a general sense of vulnerability in society(p. 84). Further, it is suspected that stories like the one at the beginning of this paragraph give us a false sense of security and lead us into believing that there are “heroes” to protect us. It also provides us with a sense of trust in our law enforcement. Which leads me to
As humans we are faced with many decisions in life, which in and of itself, distinguishes us from the animal kingdom. I'm sure other animals make decisions, but as humans we take into account our values and morals. In choosing which path to take with some of life's decisions, ethics, are often at the center; heavily influencing our choices between what is right and what is wrong. Which are usually defined by society, as to what is acceptable and what is not. As time goes on, society evolves, so do the right and wrongs, our values and morals, and ethics. In philosophy, there were three ethical theories by Aristotle, Kant, and Bentham & Mill and they were the "Golden Mean",
