What is a coming of age story? A coming of age story is a literature story and film that focuses on the growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood. Coming of age stories emphasize the dialogue or internal monologue over action, and are often set in the past. Basically, the protagonist will undergo a troubled search for an adult identity by process of trials, and experiences. Throughout the 20th century, authors seemed to widen the age groups, so the protagonist can start out in their early mid-20s. I personally think, in order to determine the age of the protagonist, the story should be linked with gender, race, social class, and national identity. Kenneth Millard stated “a recurring element of the coming-of-age narrative is the way in which a protagonist’s adult identity is framed by historical events and point of origin and conditioned by social obligations and expectations”. I feel like Rocking Horse Winner by David Herbert Lawrence is a coming of age story, and the reason why is because Paul matures throughout the book. Rocking Horse Winner is a story where a little kid rocks in his horse and he can predict the winner of the next horse race. The conflict in the store is when Paul’s mother Hester tells Paul that he is unlucky like the rest of his family. Paul decides not to believe his mother, that is where Paul matures and the story becomes a coming of age story.
