The Crucible is crazy and shocking. John Proctor stood up to the court for many different reasons. He protected his friends and most importantly his wife. He also admitted him having a affair with Abigail Williams and this is a great sin in their eyes but he didn’t care because it was to save his wife’s (Elizabeth Proctor) good name. Elizabeth Proctor is also very courageous. She tried lying to the court about John's affair to let him keep his good name and she has never lied about anything in her life. John Proctor is the most courageous person in The Crucible.

The Salem Witch Trials were one of the most embarrassing moments of history. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible shows how people can throw away their judgments over fictitious ideas such as witches. The main character, John Proctor, overcomes challenges in life including the secret affair with a teenager, Abigail Williams. This event caused John to eventually come to admit his sin of adultery. John Proctor’s last act in the play was an act of honor. On the other hand, his actions through out the play were noble.

John Proctor shows himself to be a very powerful and charismatic person right. From the time he first appears in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, he is presented as an intelligent, sharp-tongued man with a strong independent mind. These traits would seem to make him a good person to question the motives of those who cry witchcraft. However, his guilt over his affair with Abigail makes his position problematic because he is guilty of the very hypocrisy that he despises in others. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller portrays John Proctor as a decent man because he fights for his own dignity and the freedom for others.

John cannot say or argue against Elizabeth because of his guilt:” Because it speaks deceit, and I am honest! But I will plead no more! I see how your spirit twists around the single error of my life, and I will never tear it free!” Elizabeth tried to make John feel guilt, so John wanted to make sure she understood her cold nature may have prompted his cheating. John speaks his mind when he recognizes injustice. He is highly respected, even feared, by some in Salem. His name is synonymous with honour and integrity. He takes pleasure in exposing hypocrisy and is respected for it. However John is a sinner, a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time but against his own vision of decent conduct, he has come to regard himself as a kind of fraud. After admitting to lechery, John is accused of witchcraft, on this charge he is condemned.

In the book, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is a farmer and a prominent member of society. However, he had an affair with a girl in town, Abigail Williams which leads to his wife being convicted of witchcraft and himself convicted of dealing with the devil. John Proctor is a strong and effective speaker and proves his point with the three rhetorical appeals and devices such as personification, similes, metaphors and tone.

Over two-hundred innocent people were convicted of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 when hysteria swept through the town, no one could believe their closest friends. John Proctor and others show the consequences of Abigail accusing everyone of witchcraft. John shows us that suffering harsh consequences is better than lying.

The Crucible is play by Arthur Miller, made in 1953 and it is about a fictional story of The Salem witch trials that occurred in the late 1600’s. The film, The Crucible, was made in 1996, directed by Nicholas Hytner, and was made to show Miller's work on the big screen so it could appeal to the new generation. The film and the text, The Crucible, have numerous similarities, yet in addition the movie will give you a better understanding of Arthur Miller's work.

In the Salem witch trials about two-hundred people were accused of witchcraft, twenty of whom were executed. In, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, he presents a character known as John Proctor. He was considered a good-looking man almost to the point where he became intimidating. Ultimately, throughout the story, this character goes from being someone who could care less about others’ feelings, to someone who becomes nobler in a way. As it’s been noticed, John Proctor is a dynamic character that changes throughout the story.

The Crucible is an award winning 1953 playwright that was composed by American author, Arthur Miller. The play takes place in the time of the 1600’s Salem Witch Trials and tells a story of 17 year old Abigail Williams who has an affair with well entrusted family man, John Proctor. When Williams is caught in what seems to be a conjuring of spirits in the forest one morning, she faces accusations of witchcraft which would result in a hefty charge if pleaded guilty; death. Understanding the price for such a crime, Williams comes up with a lie to cover up her tracks. The playwright has had many runs in the production industry and even appeared on movie screens in the late of 1996. However, when looking at the movie and the play there are many differences that can be seen when looking at the two side by side. While the movie and the play do indeed have some similarities, they also have some differences that are very much apparent in terms of how the characters are portrayed and the scenes that had been cut out as well as the script having some altercations when transforming this playwright into a major motion picture. When zooming out and discovering the differences between the two it is obvious to see that the playwright is and always will be the better of the duo.

John proctor is one of the main characters in the play “The Crucible” at first he is selfish and commits adultery with abigail but by the end of the play he definitely matures and takes blame for what he has done to his wife elizabeth, but also at the end of the play he is hung for being convicted of witchcraft during the salem witch trials in the year 1692 he could have taken the plea with his wife but would rather keep the only thing he had left, His name.

Throughout The Crucible, John Proctor showed immense courage when he stuck to his beliefs. In Act 3, John Proctor confesses to the court his affair with Abigail Williams because he doesn’t want his wife being accused of witchcraft. He further explains Abigail’s plan to kill his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, and dance with him on her grave. (Miller 873). When Proctor calls Abigail a whore, he gives the court an opportunity to end the trials. Additionally, John faces the ultimate test when he has to sign the document that would keep him alive. Proctor is unable to lie, so he shouts, “ Because it is my name!..Because I lie and sign myself to lies” (Miller 886). His action of ripping up the document further represents Proctor’s integrity and courage. Proctor knows he will never forgive himself if he agrees to confess. He chooses to be hanged over living the remaining of his life on a lie. Proctor refuses to name others and tears up the document. Overall in The Crucible, John Proctor is a firm believer in the fact that one’s name is the only thing that stays after death.

There’s a handful of plays that you just can’t go through life without watching. The soul-shattering immortal plays that lose no impact or resonance as time goes on. For Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the emotional connection to present day is arguably stronger than at the time of production; transforming it from a historical tragedy to a contemporary morality play.
