In Act 1 Scene 1 we get introduced to the great story of Romeo & Juliet. We get to know the main story line and the main characters, and what roles each character plays. Each character has a significant part in the story and each one of them make a difference. Many things may seem like the main conflict, but in reality there is just one. In Act 1 scene 1, The servants in both houses wish to fight for their honor, but also want to keep the peace in Verona. Despite this mindset Romeo and Juliet show strong love for each other. The people in Romeo & Juliet may seem harmless, but when they see the enemy they become furious. Even though they look innocent, they can be wicked and evil and try to get rid of the people from the opposing household. Sampson is a person that does not usually get mad, but even he said, “A dog of the house of Montague moves me.” (1.1.1) This shows how much the presence of someone from the opposing household can make them angry. No matter what the situation they can not stand each other. That is why no untrusted person …show more content…
For instance, in Act 1 Scene 1 Tybalt says to Benvolio, “What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word, as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee, coward!”(1.1.5). In other words Tybalt is saying, “What? You take out your sword and then talk about peace? I hate the word peace like I hate hell, all Montagues, and you. Let’s go at it, coward!”(1.1.5). One could suggest that this evidence indicates that Tybalt is ruthless and is just thinking of fighting the Montagues, however; this evidence actually reveals that Benvolio is just saying that if someone tries to kill him he will take out his weapon to protect himself. Thus, some think that the Capulets and Montagues want to start a war, but both houses are really saying that they are trying to protect themselves if someone tries to harm or disrespect
in four of the scenes, Act 1 scene1, act 3 scene 1, act 3 scene 5 and
To generalize, Tybalt is a typical bad person with a violent mentality. During the first clash of the two families, Tybalt tries to provoke Benvolio into a fight indicating that he wants violence and bloodshed. After Benvolio tries to talk Tybalt into peace, Tybalt states "What, drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word, / As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. / Have at thee, coward" ( , , 64-66). In these few lines it is clear that Tybalt has a very negative mindset and that he would do anything to partake in a fight. Also, he is a very illogical thinker and he doesn't assess any situation such as asking himself what violence would do to help the family feud. He completely refuses to accept the idea of peace that Benvolio, a Montague, is offering. Unlike Tybalt, Benvolio is a logical thinker and he is able to assess any situation before any problem arises. Benvolio offered peace knowing the feud had been going on for way to long but Tybalt's response was to arrogantly pass of on it because he believes the Capulet family is better. To add on that thought, Tybalt is also a very cruel person to decline on peace and risk his own Capulet members to sacrifice their lives in a bloody fight. Just because he enjoys the mutiny, Tybalt is the type of person that would sacrifice his own
The source of tension in the first scene is very intense and it is building up throughout. The characters are upset because they were trying to fight but one of the sides didn’t want to start it so the just did it enough until the other people started the fight. Then they all get in a fight which then there is tension coming from two different sources in the text.
In William Shakespeare’s play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ there is alot of conflict particularly in act 3 scene 1. The audience find conflict interesting to watch because it creates drama and tension. Shakespeare uses many dramatic devices to present this; some of these techniques include foreshadowing, puns and irony to add to this effect. Another reason why Shakespeare uses conflict in the play is so that the audience are able to get attached to it and watch the conflict grow. The fact that the scene is set in a public place encourages the characters to show off, the characters do this because they want to show their strength and show people that they are not afraid. The conflict in the
However, Tybalt (Capulet) comes along and will not “talk of peace! I hate the word,” leaving Benvolio with no choice but to continue the conflict. The citizens of Verona are obviously sick of the conflict that exists between the Capulets and Montague, as they shout “Down with the Capulets! Down with the Montague!” So it is clear that the people of Verona do not like the frequent civil wars. This negativity towards conflict could also be seen as a metaphor for maintaining the peace in Shakespearean society.
In Act III, scene 3 of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence informs Romeo that the Prince has decided to punish him with banishment from Verona. Instead of feeling joyful of escaping capital punishment, Romeo mourns over the fact that he could never see Juliet again. While the two discuss the Prince's decision, the Nurse arrives and tells Romeo that Juliet is also heartbroken over Tybalt's death. Guilty of hurting Juliet, Romeo threatens to commit suicide. To stop Romeo, the Friar suggests that he and Juliet should consummate their marriage, and afterwards, they can try to get the Prince's pardon. Comforted, Romeo agrees and prepares to see Juliet. As the director, I will ask the three characters to showcase the difference between the youth and
In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, about two love struck teenagers whom aren’t able to be together due to their families feud/ social situation. There are two key themes that of love and hate. Before Romeo and Juliet meet, the audience is only aware that he is a Montague and that she is a Capulet. This adds to the scene being so dramatically effective as do other happenings throughout the length of the scene. These include the speech of Capulet and the happy and joyous mood of the party, The romantic speech of Romeo, The hatred and harshness of Tybalt’s speech, a direct contrast with that of Romeo’s and the drama when the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet first meet.
To begin with, the feud between Romeo and Juliet’s families began even before the two were born, tragically dooming their relationship before it could even start. The Feud was triggered by an old grudge, causing family, friends, and servants between the two families to take sides. “What, drawn, and talk of peace?
'I do but keep the peace put up thy sword, or manage it to part these
The line reads “ What, art thou drawn among these heartless hinds? Turn thee, Benvolio. Look upon thy death.” Tybalt’s first line in the entire play is a call to spar. Continuing his quarrel with Benvolio of House Montague, Tybalt is still proving himself an aggressor, as he states his opinion on the word “peace” as a whole in Line 60 of Act One Scene One. The line reads, “What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee, coward!”. Here Tybalt specifically states his hatred of peace and still persists in his request for a duel with Benvolio. Later in the play, and early into Act Three, Tybalt accompanied by other Capulets, encounters Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio. Sensing a fight brewing, Benvolio orders all the participants to find a concealed spot to settle
“This fight has a lot to do with hate but it has more to do with love” says Romeo Montague. Romeo understands the real motive of the feud when everyone around engages in the fight unaware of its stimuli- tribal alliance. In the play Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare displays loyalty to one’s own people through multiple characters. They show blind loyalty which eventually leads to tragic events. Loyalty is shown throughout the play by family members, friends, and servants.
Then lastly in 3.1 where he kills Mercutio and is then killed my Romeo. He is always seen fighting or trying to pick a fight in every act he plays in which shows his inept aggression. A fight is about to break out and Tybalt comes in talking about how he hates peace and he says to Benvolio, “As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee: Have at thee, coward!“ (1.1). Tybalt is last to walk into the fight before it starts. Knowing that there is tension already between the two families and all is needed is a spark to light the huge fire he doesn’t care. He also knows that if he throws the first hit the prince will probably most likely blame his family for this fight. But Tybalt let his inept aggression get the best of him and he throws the first hit and starts the greatest fight in the play. This makes him guilty because his idiotic aggression get to him which causes the prince to tell both families if they disrupted the peace again he will kill them. This causes Romeo and Juliet to go underground when they fall in love and which causes them both to die from the Friar's plan. Later in the play Romeo is in-between Mercutio and Tybalt trying to stop the
“I have no desire to argue with anyone, I choose to walk away because I just want peace ~ Kashan Dwiz”. In the play Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, that takes place in Verona, where two star-crossed lovers have a tragic death which leaves everyone in Verona weeping. The rival between two families the Montagues and the Capulets is outrageous which leads the lovers to sacrifice their lives for each other. The Shakespearean play Romeo and Juliet, the responsibility of their tragic death is the feud between the two wealthy families the Montagues and the Capulets and love at first sight.
Shakespeare uses humour, action and romance all in Act One and it is this variation that keeps the audience's attention. The play begins with a prologue that is written in the form of a sonnet. The Prologue gives a summary of the play but does not give away too much of the plot, in order to keep the suspense. Shakespeare tells of the great tragedy that will follow.
Act 3, Scene 1 in 'Romeo and Juliet' is very important to the play as
