The film adaptations both include similar important dialogue and don’t make too many large changes as of how Romeo and Juliet met as well as many other scenes. Although there are some similarities, the differences overshadow them altogether. One of the most significant changes found in the modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet is the overwhelming setting change. Since this is the modern version, there are places, things, and people who are completely different including the use of modern items such as guns, TVs, helicopters, and cars. There is also a change in wardrobe and the area in which it took place, such as a large city. Another great difference is some of the major plot changes which are how different events take place and what happens during them. One of these plot changes is when Romeo is chased by Verona’s cops and takes a hostage but in the original, he just visits Juliet’s resting place freely but meets Paris as well. Some little plot changes in the movie is how everything did not end in complete peace between the two families, the Capulets and Montagues, also the nurse did not find Juliet dead which showed the nurse’s reaction and how close she was to Juliet in the play version. Lastly, the dialogue was slightly changed. Juliet did not have a soliloquy and a speech was not spoken by the prince at the end. Though those
The characters in the original are very different than in the modern version because there is a lot more characters. In the original there is Romeo, Juliet, Benvolio, Mercutio, Tybalt, the Nurse, Friar Lawrence, Capulet, Lady Capulet, Montague, Lady Montague, Paris, Friar John, Prince Escalus, Balthasar, and a numerous amount of others. In the original the parents hate each other and do not want their kids to be together.
There are many similarities and differences between the sixties version of Romeo and Juliet and the modern version of Romeo and Juliet. It is very easy to spot these differences considering the time period each movie was set in. There are some things in the play that totally got cut from both movies. There are also some things that they added to the movies that weren’t in the play. Let us get on to the similarities and differences.
In the original play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare in 1587, throughout the years there have been movies made trying to convey the message that Shakespeare had wanted. The movies that will be examined in order to compare the differences on whether they are similar to the original are Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet and Carlo Carlei’s 2013 version, Romeo & Juliet. The movies are another version of the original play in terms of setting, tone and characters that were used in conveying the story of Romeo and Juliet. It is clearly seen that Baz Luhrmann's 1996 version is more similar to the original play as it brings out the tone and conveys the message better than the Carlo Carlei’s 2013
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story about two young lovers who are forced to be estranged as a result of their feuding families. The play is about their struggle to contravene fate and create a future together. As such, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood would try and emulate Shakespeare’s masterpiece. This had been done before in many films. Prominent among them were, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo and Juliet” and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Both films stay true to the themes of Shakespeare’s original play. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is
The original play Romeo and Juliet and the new movie are almost exactly alike in their script, but the
In order to compare and contrast the play to the movie, first I will discuss the play .In the play there is a character named Romeo.Lovely Romeo wanted to marry Juliet and stay with her in Verona,Italy. But
In the play Romeo was a little different than in the movie. In the play, Romeo cried over Rosaline and in the movie he did not physically cry. He just played pool and smoked instead of crying. Also in the movie, Romeo and his friends were always hanging out on the beach while in the play they didn’t. Also in the play, Romeo seemed more mature and adultlike than in the movie. Also in the play you kind of get the picture that the Capulets and the Montagues have the same toughness and intelligence but in the movie the Capulets and their friends are more reserved and mature than the Montagues.
Romeo and Juliet is a very well known book that is loved by many. There numerous movies done on Romeo and Juliet like Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version and Gnomeo and Juliet. There are many apparent differences like using guns instead of swords and using gnomes instead of people. Although there are many similarities, the differences between Luhrmann’s movie and Gnomeo and Juliet compared to the play Romeo and Juliet are evident. The similarities between the movie and the play only go down to the plot and language.
The clearest similarity is the feud between the two families. The classic story of Romeo and Juliet revolves around the two young lovers who struggle to stay together, because of the feud between their families. The two’s families have been in a feud for years, Romeo belongs to the Montague family and Juliet belongs to the Capulet family, and both families despise each other. Since the families hate each other so much Romeo and Juliet, or Gnomeo and Juliet, are forced to hide their love. In both the movie Gnomeo and Juliet and Romeo and Juliet the main characters are forced to hide their love due to the two families’ feud. In the movie
Some of the characters are different. Romeo was a lot more chill and didn't act like a 4 year old. Mercutio was pretty cool, he was a savage at the party, he gave everyone some drugs and partied like it was 1964. Lady Capulet was also totally different, She was crazy like Mercutio at
The memorable scenes and setting can be similar but different. The setting in West Side Story was New York, while in Romeo and Juliet it was in Verona. West Side Story was in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet was in 1500’s. In the movie West Side Story it seemed newer and it wasn't as boring and drug out, but Romeo and Juliet seemed like it took forever to get over with.
The movie and play “Romeo and Juliet” made by William Shakespeare has hundreds on hundreds of versions in the world, which generally includes two characters named Romeo and Juliet; two people that fall into love with each other, as many problems occur which leads up to having both of them die in the end. In 1996, Baz Luhrmann released his own version of shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. This version is the most modern, with the 1968 version being released before by Zeffirelli’s “Romeo and Juliet”. In my opinion, Baz Luhrmann had topped the expectations and had made the better movie. This version is the better depiction because of the clear emotions shown by certain characters in the scenes, the setting of the movie which made the scenes come to life and have a meaning, the mood matching the scenes very well along with that, and how smooth and easy it is to follow through the transitions through scenes in the movie; not having to overthink what was really happening.
The Romeo and Juliet movie is truly different than the play. There are a few versions of movies of this play, however, the one we watched in class was highly action packed. It had a whole dissimilar setting that you could hardly tell it was the story of Romeo and Juliet. Even though, it was different in many ways it did have it’s similarities. They did have all the same characters, and main scenes in the movie still.
First, there are many differences that are able to be spotted from the written play versus the video of the play. The biggest difference that can be found from the two different versions of Romeo and Juliet is changes that take place throughout the plot. The play was written in a different time period than when the movie was filmed. The original play was written in the lake 1500’s by William Shakespeare whereas, the first movie was filmed in 1968. Therefore, the different time periods can be a part of the reason for differences found in the plot from the written play and film of the play. For example, in the book Romeo goes to
Shakespeare's’ Romeo & Juliet is one of the most famous plays ever written. Over the years there have been many different play and film adaptations.
