William Shakespeare 's “Romeo and Juliet” have been remade countless of times, and each time in different ways. Most people are familiar with the tragedy of lovers known as Romeo and Juliet. Two interpretations of this story are the 2013 film by Carlo Carlei and the 2011 film by Kelly Asbury. The two movies have the same story line but are very different from each other. In the 2013 film known as Romeo and Juliet, the characters are the traditional version of the sonnet written from Shakespeare. Whereas the 2011 version, Gnomeo and Juliet, is a spin off Walt Disney version of the sonnet. In the two films they both have similar story lines, but with the main character, Romeo/Gnomeo, the language, romance, and ending is completely …show more content…
In the balcony scene in Gnomeo, Juliet does most of the talking. Gnomeo doesn 't have a lot of dialogue, whereas Juliet is the only one having a monologue. Juliet says in this scene, “Oh Gnomeo, Gnomeo, are we really doomed, Gnomeo, to never see each other again? Why must you wear a blue hat? Why couldn 't it be red like my father, or... or green like a leprechaun? Or purple like, um... like, uh… like some weird guy? I mean, what 's in a gnome? Because you 're blue, my father sees red, and because I 'm red, I 'm feeling blue. Oh. At any rate, that shouldn 't be the thing to keep us apart, should it?” In this script, it is much easier to understand than the other film. The language still rhymes like the 2013 film, but still hard to understand. Unlike the language of Romeo and Juliet, the romance between the two is easy to follow along. Romance is a big part of “Romeo and Juliet”. In the 2013 film of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is at first “in love” with Rosaline, and comes to the party of the Capulets to see her. He talks about how he likes her very much at the beginning of the film. It is not until then he spots Juliet. It’s love at first sight for the two. They learn to like each other exceptionally fast. Juliet takes Romeo to the side, where no one else is and they exchange kisses. Within the next day they speak of marriage of the two. They barely know each other and think they’re in love. Romeo and Juliet find a way to get married even. Romeo goes after her
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story about two young lovers who are forced to be estranged as a result of their feuding families. The play is about their struggle to contravene fate and create a future together. As such, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood would try and emulate Shakespeare’s masterpiece. This had been done before in many films. Prominent among them were, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo and Juliet” and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Both films stay true to the themes of Shakespeare’s original play. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is
The original play Romeo and Juliet and the new movie are almost exactly alike in their script, but the
The movie Gnomeo and Juliet uses a plot line that is far more simple to follow. The movie’s plot line included ideals such as, love and forgiveness. These are two ideas that a young audience are able to comprehend. Even though these stories have different plot lines and different complexities. They both deliver a message that is very
Romeo was in love with Rosaline a couple days before which he barely knew. And now he fell in love with Juliet in 1 day which he was with for only about a hour and a hour isn’t enough time to know someone a lot and to even love them. In Romeo and Juliet it also says “O she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear, Beauty too rich for use , for earth too dear! So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows, As yonder lady o’er her fellows shows The measure done, I’ll watch her of stand, And, touching hers, make blessed my rude hand. Did my heart love till now?forswear it, sight.” This is part when Romeo crashes the Capulet party and see Juliet for the first time. Romeo in this piece of verse , Romeo was saying that he never saw anything more beautiful and he ask himself if he just fell in love which he was but he only fell in love for seeing her beauty not her personality. The two lovers would have to know each other more other than beauty and might now love each other and be happy because they would've found out who they actually were and how they act as individuals.
Romeo had just loved another girl, Rosaline, only moments before seeing Juliet and deciding that he had loved her instantly. According to the article, “Love at first sight is a phenomenon that 15% of people have reported experiencing it. They described it as a once in a lifetime situation.” It seems impossible that Romeo had experienced this with two girls within a few days. As for Juliet, she is only 13 years old. Many studies have found that children can not love somebody romantically until they have hit puberty. She shows her immaturity towards the beginning of the book, when the nurse is speaking to her and she gets extremely embarrassed. While she does mature throughout the play, her maturity level at when she first met Romeo was no where near where it would have to be to fall inlove.
Romeo and Juliet is a very well known book that is loved by many. There numerous movies done on Romeo and Juliet like Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version and Gnomeo and Juliet. There are many apparent differences like using guns instead of swords and using gnomes instead of people. Although there are many similarities, the differences between Luhrmann’s movie and Gnomeo and Juliet compared to the play Romeo and Juliet are evident. The similarities between the movie and the play only go down to the plot and language.
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and a modern take on the story portrayed in Gnomeo and Juliet directed by Kelly Asbury can be compared to each other in many ways. As both stories progress, and the plot develops, it becomes clearer that there are multiple similarities and differences between the two. Despite their differences, both tell the timeless story of Romeo and Juliet in a way that touches everyone.
Juliet is to be married as “The valiant Paris seeks [her] for his love”(686) and Romeo feels depressed. Juliet doesn’t truly want to be married to Paris and when Romeo comes along and says he loves her, Juliet uses this as an excuse to be ineligible to Paris. At their young ages of 13 and 16 both, don’t truly know love and can’t effectively associate their feelings. The friar feels that"[Romeo’s] love did read by rote, that could not spell'"(707). Romeo is only repeating what he has heard about love, not genuinely understanding what he is saying. He acts impatient and brash, quickly jumping at any chance to say he is in love thinking it will bring him happiness. Moments before he saw Juliet, Romeo claimed that he was deeply in love with Rosaline, although when presented with someone who he deemed as more beautiful he’s questions if, "[his] heart [did] love till now?...For [he feels he has] ne'er saw true beauty till this night" (pg 692). If he had truly been in love with Rosaline then seeing another girl wouldn't have changed his mind, but as he is so young he isn't able to understand that what he felt for both, Juliet and Rosaline was lust. Teenagers act irrationally, based solely on emotion, Romeo and Juliet are too caught up in their feelings to take a step back and consider their
The Pixar animated film, Gnomeo and Juliet, had major differences in comparison to Shakespeare’s original play, Romeo and Juliet. The most fundamental changes to the film were shown through the plot, setting, and characters, and resulted in a film that all ages could enjoy. The director, Kelly Asbury, expertly nurtured the plot in order to create an ending that would be satisfying for the young and old alike. Alongside the plot, he used the setting of two rival gardens to symbolize the original feuding families, the Montagues and Capulets. Asbury also changed many of the characters’ personalities from the play, giving the film a playful undertone. Throughout Gnomeo and Juliet, Asbury changed the plot, setting, and characters in order to create a film better-suited for children.
In Gnomeo and Juliet it is shown through colors (reds and blues), in Romeo and Juliet it is shown through last names. With many similarities come just as many differences so unlike the real Romeo and Juliet, Gnomeo and Juliet is set in the backyard of two homes
To begin with, it is shown near the start of the book that the two main characters are childish. Before Juliet, Romeo said he was in love with her cousin Rosaline. The two of them never talked before, or very little. When Romeo and his friends go to a party, Romeo goes for the sole purpose of seeing Rosaline. He ends up seeing someone else instead. The beauty he sees is Juliet. They immediately fall in love with each other based off looks considering they had one dance and knew nothing of the other person. Just like that, Romeo moved on from Rosaline and onto Juliet without thinking twice. Even after realizing the person they were newly in love with was from the family enemy, they still decided to pursue this fresh
The Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet has been recreated and adapted many many times. One of the most popular adaptations is the animated movie Gnomeo and Juliet, which is actually very similar to the original play. They have similar characters, like the gnome Tybalt, and the gnome Benny (Benvolio). In addition to this, both the movie and the play have almost the same plot-line (a fued, a forbidden love, a fight scene, and the feud coming to a halt at the end). On the other hand, the movie and the play have many differences, too.
1) Before meeting Romeo, how does Juliet view the prospect of marriage? -Before meeting Romeo, Juliet viewed marriage as something that will exterminate the amount of power she has over herself. In Elizabethan times, once a woman married all their belongings would be her husband’s, the “Elizabethan Culture: Love and Marriage Four Centuries Ago” worksheet speaks much of this topic. They state that she would have no say in how he managed himself, his money, his property, her, his job, and the person he is in general. Juliet knew she would be counted as something that simply belonged to her husband and she was an accessory (almost).
In the movie it shows how the original tragedy would have looked, if it had happened in the modern time, however they still choose to keep the original language from the play by William Shakespeare. The movie somehow manages to create an exiting mix between old and new. Alongside very good casted actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio who is very well known for many roles in award winning movies, his role is Romeo in the movie. Juliet is played by, Claire Danes who is well known for her big role in Terminator 3. Both actors play the their leading roles perfectly and with a fantastic mix between being emotional, and dramatic which is what Romeo and Juliet is
As soon as Romeo saw Juliet he completely forgot about Rosaline. This already tells you something about Juliet's beauty. The first conversation between Romeo and Juliet is an extended Christian metaphor. Using this metaphor, Romeo cleverly manages to convince Juliet to let him kiss her. The religious hints of the conversation clearly imply that their love can be described only through religion, that pure association with God.
