Ronald Reagan was not only a prolific actor, appearing in more than fifty motion picture films, starting in 1937, he expanded his career in his later adulthood, starting with a nationally-televised political speech in 1964 for Barry Goldwater, a Republican presidential candidate, and continuing to the California governorship in 1966, trading his renowned acting career for a life in politics that continued for the next thirty-five years.
He began his bid for the presidency of the United States in 1868 and was unsuccessful in getting the party’s nomination for president. He was best known for increasing military spending, deregulating major businesses, and captaining the recovery of the national economy, which lasted throughout his presidency. On the international front, he was successful in forging a political relationship with Mikhail Gorbachev, which helped improve US-Soviet relations and secondarily led to the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. Many of the policies created during his presidency have continued on as important international and national programs, even after his death in 2004.

Ronald Reagan was born of predominantly Irish descent as “Ronald Wilson Reagan” on February 6, 1911 in the small town of Tampico, Illinois. He was the second son, having an older brother, John “Neil”, who was born (also in Tampico) in 1908. His parents were John Edward Reagan (who went by the nickname “Jack”) and Nelle Wilson Reagan.
