Rubber Duckies Lost at Sea The "Rubber Duckie " is a favored toy for many babies. Surprisingly, rubber ducks have also aroused the interest of scientists. Each year there are numerous cargo spills in the ocean. In 1992 a powerful storm occurred at sea. As a result, 29,000 rubber ducks fell into the ocean. The ducks were on route from Hong Kong to the United States. Since then, they have floated throughout the world. They have been spotted in Hawaii, Alaska, South America, and Australia. They've also been seen as far north as Scotland and Newfoundland. These amazing ducks have been named the Friendly Floaters. The Floaters have even survived the Arctic's freezing ice storms. Twelve years later, ducks were still appearing on many beaches.
One giant sized dust storm made it all the way to the Atlantic Ocean from central United States. This monster dust storm was 2 miles high and traveled 2,000
On December 8, 2004, more than 300,000 gallons of heavy bulked fuel leaked from the ship wrecked Selendang Ayu, a Malaysian freighter, and washed ashore on the beaches of Skan Bay and Makushin Bay of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands (Ritchie & Gill, The Selendang Ayu Oil Spill: A Study of the Renewable Resource Community of Dutch Harbor/Unalaska, 2006, p.1). Dutch Harbor is the number one port for crabbing, processing plants, and fisheries of halibut, pollock, and cod. The port employees several of the inhabitants. The Coast Guard along with contracted officials implemented and begin executing a plan for cleanup. Meetings were held between the Unified Command and the community to inform them of the plan of action that was being taken to protect their revenue and restore their beaches. The natives of the island offered several suggestions for cleanup and felt unacknowledged about their concerns and offers to help. The Unified Command continued recovery efforts as originally planned and assured the community that the oil would not reach the shore. After a few weeks tar balls began to wash ashore, raising concerns of the residents. More meetings with the community were held eventually leading the UC to utilize
The Coast Guard regulations outline equipment and procedures to reduce unnecessary bulk cargo from spilling (USCG). Though these regulations aim at preventing avoidable cargo spills; accidents out of a crew's control can happen. Sometimes a ship in rough water loses part of its cargo as a wave sweeps across an open cargo hold. Others times a ship offloading misses the dock machinery collecting the cargo and some of the cargo spills into the water. Vis versa a ship loading floats away from the dock (because a mooring line breaks) or rocks do to wave action, causing a fuel line to snap. On the other hand a majority of cargo and fuel dumping occurs on purpose. Ships on the Great Lakes cannot allow their dry cargos to mix so the Coast Guard created a policy where a ship's deck must be ‘broom clean’, meaning any cargo remaining on deck after an on/offload considered safe gets washed off the deck (USCG). The Coast Guard believes the practice meets all environmental standards and their intentions mean well, but to no avail. The let down on this practice lies with the shipping companies who take advantage of the Coast Guard. The companies dump toxic materials into the lakes including miscellaneous garbage thrown overboard by crew members and release dirty oil with little thought of consequence (USCG). The Coast Guard does not have the technology available to enforce the
There are millions of products transported across the ocean on a daily basis. However, occasionally, there is a wrinkle in the system and a few of them slip out into the water. Or in my case, hundreds of them. Me and the other ducks had been just
Elder calls the duck a magnet for children, it is representational to childhood and adolescences. “We didn’t want something abstract. Its magnet for children and it hasn’t been branded by anything “, Elder recalls saying it was perfect for the
There are disasters occurring all around the world that most individuals will not hear of due to a lack of media coverage. Many of these disasters can have incredibly detrimental effects on entire populations, and those at risk deserve a chance to educate themselves. Two of the disasters found were the West Fertilizer plant explosion and the increasing rate of acidification of ocean water. Despite the fact that these disasters pose such incredible dangers, they were found to be among the least reported on stories amongst media outlets. Although these disasters have not been covered nearly as much as other major catastrophes, such as hurricane Katrina, they still have far reaching physical and emotional consequences and have their own unique story.
The actual garbage patch was predicted in a 1988 paper that was published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States. This prediction was based off of results from several alaskan based researchers between 1985 and 1988. Charles J. Moore, returning home through the North Pacific Gyre after competing in the Transpac sailing race in 1997, came upon an enormous
Some people find storms rather relaxing and enjoy listening to it. Others might even enjoy being in one. The same couldn’t be said on the day of October 30, 1991 for 6 fishermen on a 72 foot long long-liner called, The Andrea Gail, in North Atlantic Ocean in the middle of “The Perfect Storm”.
This true story began in 1992 when a ship was on a route from Hong Kong to the United States. A major storm with high winds jolted the ship. As a result, crates of rubber and plastic toys were hurled into the Pacific Ocean.
When they had let down the net and started to pull it back in, they found that they had caught a great number of fish. So many that their net was breaking. Although it isn't recorded how many fish were caught.
Years ago, the SS Nile was on it’s way back from their most recent trip to Europe. As in every journey, there were twist and turns that affected their trip. 2 weeks changed to 3 weeks. Each week there was a new disaster. The people were freaking out, jumping off the boat trying to swim back to safety. Weeks and weeks went by, each day there was fewer and fewer people left on the ship. Every day there was a new traumatic impact to the ship. Finally a month later it has sunken.
During the 1990’s one of the most famous cruise ship companies, Royal Caribbean, was caught illegally discharging toxic waste into oceans surrounding the United States and surrounding countries, as well as international waters. According to Wald the waste included, but is not limited to, oily water from the bilge of the ships, chemicals used for dry cleaning, and chemicals used to develop film. These chemicals were mixed in with the gray water, used water that is safe to drain into the ocean, and then flushed out with the gray water (1999). The Department of Justice pointed out that in an attempt to cover their tracks, workers on these cruise ships kept false maintenance logs, and had bypass pipes

It made me realize that our animals are important and they need to be kept as safe as possible. There is over 5.25 trillion and counting pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Over 269,000 tons of it floats to the surface. The most deadliest, but common pieces of trash found in the oceans are: bottle caps, six pack holders, and plastic bags.( “Bottle Cap Report.” Stichting de Noordzee, www.noordzee.nl/bottlecapreport/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA0vnQBRDmARIsAEL0M1kjy4fCRT4JLFnzYEc52MbH8TN79p1S_Tz1cQqWK6GFynuAe8GYLrAaAtV3EALw_wcB.)
Human waste: when people throw some case Plastics and Metal materials in the coast, It can die a lot of marine animals.
