Oedipus Essay When it comes to Oedipus, learning that he was destined to kill his father was one of the most devastating things to hear. Oedipus resented this prophecy immensely, and decided that the only way he was going to avert this disastrous fate was to move far away from his home, and everyone he loved. Oedipus wanted nothing more than to live a normal life where he did not live in fear of murdering his father and marrying his mother. To his dismay, this prophecy came true and Oedipus rued the day he was ever born. Oedipus is innocent of committing these heinous acts he spent a great deal of time and effort trying to avoid it. Oedipus only killed his father out of self defense, wedded his mother after glory, and even after he learned the truth became overwhelmed with guilt. Oedipus was forced off of the road by Laius’s chariot, and it is even known that Laius himself commanded this unnecessarily aggressive act. The charioteer then attacked Oedipus, in which he absolutely had no choice in defending himself, in a possibly deadly situation. In addition to being attacked by Laius’s servants, King Laius himself attacked, and according to Oedipus, “The old man saw me [a]nd brought his double goad down upon my head…” (Sophocles 43). Being put in this dangerous situation, Oedipus had no choice but to strike back. Given that Oedipus had no idea he was killing his biological father, that unfortunately happened to be the kind, Oedipus is consciously innocent because he was only protecting himself from a group of men coming at him who he would not have killed
