The Black Student Union seeks to uplift minority students at Samford University by creating an encouraging community on campus. BSU service projects and events inspire the development of relationships between minority students and the entire student body. Brianna Walker, senior marketing major and BSU president, said, “All of these things are done to create a positive outlook on minorities. The Black Student Union gives them an outlet to express themselves within their race and expand the opinions and minds of other races.”
As it is the mission of the Black Student Union to encourage community at Samford, the BSU partnered with SAC to host a Harry’s Coffee House concert. This event was held in honor of Black History Month. Together, students
The natural environment is the parameters of Howard University, which begins at Florida Avenue and Georgia Avenue in Washington, D.C. Minority serving institutions have been an integral part of the education system in the United States since before the Civil War (LeMelle, 2002). Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have, for much of their existence, been criticized for the level of academic rigor, political context, and their social agenda have created controversy for generations. With that being said, HBCUs hold a valuable place in the landscape of US higher education institutions. The culture, history, and perspective that is taught and shared are unparalleled and cannot be replicated at a predominately white institution (PWI).

However, African American students have gained so much knowledge during the years they have attended the HBCU. A lot of students have gained knowledge, not only about themselves but this world they are surrounded by. Knowledge can be defined in many aspects, but in this assignment knowledge focuses on the skills acquired by a person through experience or education. “…A significant amount of studies investigate their historical significance through the use of an objective institutional analysis…” As many new African American students that come into the college scenery their knowledge is or is not up to par with social issues. By attending classes and events students can learn the history of an HBCU and what makes it imperative to this country. Kennedy (2012) stated that attending an HBCU would give her the opportunity to mature as an African American women in a supportive cultural environment. On many HBCU campuses they are filled with the most enriched and pure history of how they came about. (Digital quote) Not only is an HBCU able to push their students academically, but it exposes students to their history. Most students find themselves interested in Black Archives learning not only what the HBCU has done for students but learning about other African Americans traditions and
Delta State University pioneers a path for each and every one of their students by giving them resources such as the international business symposium. Having speakers with very prominent careers, students are given useful insight into the business world, and students learn key characteristics that they need to exhibit in order to have a successful career. These speakers leave a permanent mark on our students and can also serve as a foot in the door for future employment. During DSU’s 2018 International Business symposium, three speakers that proved to be extremely influential were David Abney, Rodney Francis, and Danny Lipe.
Historically Black College and Universities have played a essential role in changing the scene of advanced education in the United States. Today, in a time of quick change, HBCUs confront difficulties and also new snags. Not only does the HBCU itself face difficulties, but being a student at one can definitely be challenging at times. They face multiple issues such as debt, discouragement, and mental illnesses. All of this could affect both their futures, and worth ethics. In order for the students to be career steady, these issues they are facing must be fixed.
Bland, Robert , Cantey, Nia Imani , Joy-Davis, Danielle, Mack LaKerri. (2013). Historically Black colleges and universities: Sustaining a culture of excellence in the twenty-first century. Journal of African American Studies 17.2 (2013):
Supporting the success for diverse students on campus is just the beginning to make their experience as equal to that of the white community. Without positive campus attitude and without the recognition of what diversity brings to a school and a classroom, the system would not thrive and those of a different ethnic background will not be inclined to attend. The conclusion to Espinosa’s, Gaertner, and Orfields article is that college and university leaders
Beneath the history of HBCU’s, the table of excellence is what keeps the history and legacy alive. Numerous campuses have great mentors for the scholars to learn from. Some fellow graduates from the same seminary come back to mentor the scholar about the “real world” after college experience immediate bond. Alumni’s have also created a network with a plethora of opportunities and life-long companions. It is a gift that continues to give. A group named “Black Lives Matter” supports African Americans and enlarge black supremacy. Some think that African Americans need to have strong leaders and motivation. HBCU’s have nurturing environment that plays a vital role in personal growth, academic and development, and cultivating a deep rooted connect
Southern New Hampshire University is a company and its product is producing competent students who will be ready for the working world. Management at Southern New Hampshire University starts with the Administration and their collective guidelines on everything from the teaching curriculum to practices and policies that keep the SNHU company running efficiently. Once the top level administration is content with the current business model those instructions are passed down to the "department heads" or deans of their respective vein of schooling. The local deans then hand the necessary information on down to the teachers. Every single link in the management chain is as important as the next. The teachers are expected to effectively teach the approved
On October 20, 2017, the Student Government Association (SGA) conducted a survey to students at the University of Mary Washington about President Paino’s draft of An Investment of Hope for the Future: A Strategic Vision for the University of Mary Washington. The purpose of the survey was to gather student feedback about Goal 1: Promoting the values of service and social justice, Goal 2: Reconstituting the liberal arts for the digital age, Goal 3: Immersing our students in applied, impactful learning experiences, Goal 4: Creating a diverse and inclusive community as an essential requirement for academic excellence and academic success, and the actions steps supporting each goal.
In recent weeks a growing debate across campuses has arisen over the remaining racial divide that has left some students feeling disenfranchised by the universities that seek to teach them (Hui 2015). This growing dissent can be seen from Missouri to Princeton as students protest and object to what they claim to be a culture on university campuses not contusive to learning or to minority groups (Newman 2015). At Princeton University much like at the University of Missouri students are becoming increasingly vocal about the difficulties facing those of color at institutions that do not adequately address their needs, or in the case of Princeton fail to sufficiently acknowledge a legacy of racism in their institutions (Hui 2015). This
SNCC’s community organizing and activism made them foremost and successful contributors in the Civil Rights Movement and laid the groundwork for progressive student movements on many campuses. Students demonstrated successfully in support of Civil Rights, opposition to the war in Vietnam, institutional divestment of South Africa holdings, and establishing African American Studies academic departments and curriculums on campuses in the 70’s and 80’s. Today, the need to demand Black Space is evidence that there has been erosion in emphasis and presence this important dynamic on a college
My initial interest for applying to Radford University came about through an uplifting conversation I had with Danylle Kunkel, professor within the department of management. While attending a friend's basketball tournament who attends and plays for Radford University, Mrs. Kunkel and I met and spoke briefly about my aspirations for both business and management, and more specifically about my inevitably intention to turn my father's business "Z-Kabob" into a full blown franchisee. Long story short, she had given me some priceless tips about marketing decision-making, mentioning how Radford's entrepreneurship program couldn't have been a better fit for me. Her evident passion while educating me, and within business itself, is just one of the factors that makes me so eager and joyful to write this application with hopes of getting an acceptance.
Historically Black College Universities (HBCU) have been attracting African American people for years with their high quality education, great history, and amazing band. However, over time the requirements have changed to attend. HBCU’s are colleges that can relate to the african american students, help them grow as individuals, and become more knowledgeable about their culture. HBCU’s are predominantly black schools, but in the recent years the schools have integrated. Now that these schools are becoming more diverse, it gives the school no unique quality. HBCU’s should become a part of the state university system, due to the ways they are conforming to the ways of other colleges.
