Software Engineering is the discipline of designing and developing software projects so that they behave in an efficient and independent manner while meeting the requirement of the client. Some key problems which arise in software engineering are complexity, inefficient communication and inadequate testing. Software projects are large and take years to make. In order to reduce the risk of failure and keep track of problems, software projects must follow the correct methodology.

Computer engineering is a very extensive, challenging career. To become a computer engineer you need years of experience and college education. Many people think this career is easy and good paying, but is not that easy, excessive amount of knowledge is needed to become a top class engineer in this field, but that doesn’t mean it is an impossible task. One must understand that computer engineering is a challenge since before one begins studying it. With that kept in mind an undergraduate must know their qualifications, training, job duties and drawbacks, salary, hours, work calendar and employment in order to become a Computer Engineer.

Choosing to learn software engineering was fortuitous for me when I had to select a profession several years ago. As I studied software engineering more deeply, I began to realize technologies related not only are very interesting but also have permeated into many fields. After experiencing undergraduate education for four years and graduate education for less than one year, I am extremely desperate for an occasion to further improve my cognition and practical ability in computing science. In today’s world computers play a crucial role in everyday life. Many different types of jobs are offered with computers. One essential branch of computer related jobs is Software Development. Software developers program and write the code of software used on computers. Without software developers computers would have very little use and very few features. While researching Software Development I took many steps to increase my understanding of the career.

My uncle lived in Aizwal, and a few times a year we would visit him. His apartment had a television and it was a very exciting event to sit around the big screen with my brothers and sisters watching movies. Watching the Rogers and Hammerstein productions like The Sound of Music made a tremendous impact on my understanding of world music and song. We Mizo people love to sing and do so unselfconsciously. It is more a part of daily life than singing is in the West. However, our songs were so much different from the songs I heard from Julie Andrews. Although they had foreign sounding scales, these songs were magic to my ears. I taught myself the tunes from The Sound of Music and other landmarks of musical theater. These songs stuck in my head, and soon I had half the village singing "I Am Sixteen Going on Seventeen" with me, especially those who were turning seventeen.

It was an introductory class on physical chemistry and our chemistry teacher was teaching us the allotropes of carbon. At the end of the class, he asked us, “What do you think makes a small piece of diamond more precious than tons of charcoal, although they are made up of same carbon atoms? Is it its appearance? No. It’s the pressure that the carbon endured for thousands of years to become a diamond”. “A diamond is just a piece of charcoal that handled the pressure well”, he quoted. “No pressure, No diamond. Pressure shapes a diamond, in the same way, persistence in challenging situation shapes a man”- I still remember all these words from my high school chemistry teacher which inspired me and made me realize that perseverance is the key to reach the sky.

“Software engineering is like an art in that it begins with a problem and ends with the creation of a solution that solves it (Blum, p.9).” Engineers grew out of the ashes of the problems of the world. Software engineers deal with problems and maintenance in computer software. For a computer to find a solution to anything, programs have to be designed and written into the computer using models for the software process. Bernd Bruegge, in his presentation titled, Software Lifecycle Models, states “a software process represents all the phases needed to create a program, from the study of the goals leading to the objective, to the maintenance of said goals and how the phases relate to one another.” There are many different models used as guidelines to form the software process needed to create a program, but this paper will prove how the waterfall model performs the software process in the most reliable and user-friendly fashion. The waterfall model will be defined and then compared to the V-model, prototype model, and Boehm’s spiral model, with all aspects in relation to software engineering.

I am Swarna Kumari Korrapati doing MS (CIS) in California University of Management and Sciences – San Diego. Before starting MS in CalUMS, I worked as Assistant Software Engineer in IGlobal Technologies – Hyderabad, India for 12 months. I worked as a Software Engineer.
