Nineteen Twenty Eight For some time, Vyse had known his mother, Sarah Ann Vyse, aged 76, had been ailing. He was however, surprised to receive a letter from his sister, advising him to come at once to Havelock Place, Shelton, his mother’s condition had deteriorated, and she had asked for him. There was no possibility of Nell Vyse accompanying him, she had to remain in Chelsea to oversee the Pottery business. Vyse, a dutiful son, arranged to travel to the Potteries as soon as was practicable. However, two days after his arrival at Shelton, Ann Vyse died on Sunday 22nd April. Two days later, at 2 pm on Tuesday, April 24th he attended her interment at Shelton cemetery. In comparison with the graveside obsequies of his father, the late Charles Simpson Vyse, the funeral of his mother was simple in its ceremony. For Vyse, his mother’s death severed his bond with the Potteries, …show more content…
Furthermore, they were given a free hand in the display of their earthenware figures, and stoneware pottery. The Vyses, in return, would exhibit their complete figure back catalogue, and two new figures made specifically for Walker’s show. The Vyses supply of figures fell below the estimated demand, and in consequence there was no difficulty in increasing the asking prices, notably for their American market. However, in England, the Vyses had yet to convince the influential art critics of the day, their credentials as bona fide ‘studio potters.’ However, they were keen to promote their Chinese inspired, ash-glazed

One evening, Queenie Volupides had a quarrel with her husband Arthur and went off to the local country club where a party was ongoing. She departed the club just before one o’clock in the morning with a few friends to have another drink at her place. Queenie however, arrived ten minutes earlier and when her friends arrived, she stated that “Something terrible happened. Arthur slipped and fell on the stairs. He was coming down for another drink - he still had the glass in his hand --- and I think he’s dead. Oh, my God --- what shall I do?” The autopsy conducted later concluded that Arthur died from a wound on the head and confirmed that he’d been drunk.
However, the result of the Vyses concentration expended on the production of the stoneware vessels and attendant ash-glazes culminated in the re-working of the figure group Morning Ride. Even so, it is difficult to understand the reasoning why Vyse found it expedient to remodel this figure rather than devising an additional composition, and Marsh, in his Walker’s article, does not mention it. Indeed, this present model is occasionally mistaken for the 1925 original (Fig. 62). Furthermore, the 1929 model should not be viewed as a previous model bearing a similar title. In sculptural terms, this edition is a pointed up version of the original. Doubtless, Vyse expended much the same industry in the as he had done when modelling the smaller 1925 version. The present version, thought by collectors to be the suitable of the two, and possibly justification for the time

Separate but equal would never be enough for Sarah Grimke. Born in the wrong era and driven by reformist values, such as equal rights for African Americans as well as women, Sarah is more than willing to be labeled an outcast in order to speak out against the social evils of the early 1800s. Unfortunately, due to her family’s roots in Charleston, South Carolina as traditional plantation owners, Sarah’s thoughts are not met with approval or recognition in the slightest. Sarah forges her own diverging path of mutiny and audacity in an era where there are few like-minded progressives. However, while the path may be the one less traveled by, it is not devoid of hindrances or tests. Sarah Grimke faces countless obstacles in her life that ultimately serve as moral and emotional tests: pushing her to develop her own identity, steering her towards a life of abolition, and compelling her to truly make a difference in the lives of others.

Julie Powell, the author of her own memoir, was a distraught secretary working at a bureaucratic organization led primarily by Republicans in order to build a memorial to the terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001. To further this misery, she was told that she may be unable to have children in the future. After hearing this news, she and her husband Eric went to her mother’s house in Texas where Powell found an old copy of Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking which reminded her of childhood memories of sneaking looks at and moments with books about sex and cooking she knew she should not read. She was inspired by these memories to cook every recipe in Julia Child’s historic and expansive cookbook, in one year.
In Sarah Blaffer Hrdy’s talk, she discusses infants and the presence of alloparents in combination with their parents. Hrdy states that human infants fall behind other apes in physical development, but are able to monitor others and assess their intentions from a very young age. I find this interesting because often human infants are only compared to other human infants in regards to if they can hold eye contact and if they understand facial expression. When human infants are compared to other nonhuman infant primates, there is a vast difference of what human infants can be successful at. It is also interesting to note that human infants get significantly better at recognizing their mother’s face as they get older, where chimpanzees get worse at recognizing their mothers face as they get older.
Sarah Parker Remond was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on June 6, 1826 to Nancy and John Remond. Her family was very prominent in the fight against slavery and so was she. Her family provided a safe haven for escaping slaves. They lived comfortably due to their hair salon and catering business. Sarah was very proud when she and her sister passed the entrance exam for a girls’ academy in Salem, but even though they were qualified academically, they were rejected because of their race. Refusing to give up on secondary education, Sarah and her family moved to Newport, Rhode Island, where Sarah and all of her siblings attended an all-black private school. She held her love for education and continued to read numerous poems and books until 1841
One of the perspectives employed by Porter is seen through Granny’s thoughts, which are preoccupied by her jilting and “the thought of him [the man who jilted her]… that moved and crept in her head” (5) that when her death came she still “wanted to give Cornelia the amethyst set…[and] to do something about the Forty Acres” (8).
Hello Joan Vanterpool, I enjoyed very much reading your post. One can tell you spent some time going over the syllabus. There are many things that the professor informed us to help one succeed. For instance, in the document, "Earning Maximum Points on the Discussion Boards", three is a stage process that gives an idea on what is required for each post. On this document it is quite simple all the important topics are highlighted to help one. For instance, like the post word lengths, writing about personal experiences, information must come from the required textbook or assigned websites of the week for postings, and many more information one can read. Secondly, Sarah Kay shows the importance of taking risks by talking about how you should not be afraid to take risks because regardless of what happens knowledge is always gained. For example Kay states "But i". This talks about how you should not be afraid to taste life because it is so sweet but so fragile. The quotes message is even though the world is so corrupt does not mean people should be afraid to live their life. This gives us a closer look on why women take risks without hesitation. Taking risks can cause damage and Sarah Kay talks about dealing with that because that is what women do. She explains this by saying "there". The evidence demonstrates the bad days where girls are barely making it by. In conclusion these examples prove
