Homeless people are people too. Everyday I see people poking and ridiculing the homeless. What most people don't comprehend is that they once had something going for them, at one time they have succeeded at something. Everyone has depended on something in a time of desperation, binge-eating, social media, avid tv watcher, so who are we to judge? That person you just threw that soda can at, that's someone's mother, child, aunt, uncle, father, grandchild. A homeless person isn't less of a person, think of how much misery and heart ache they have to go through daily, and you wanna be a rotten person and add even more? Everyone struggles and hurts, so why can't you see that homeless people hurt too? Everyone has made a few wrong turns, some are
People are very ignorant towards homeless people, just how the prisoners are in Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” to the outside world. Society seems to view the homeless as nasty, dirty people who are drug addicts when in reality a lot of them are just in very unfortunate situations that they can't get themselves out of. Just like the rich may view the poor and the educated may view the uneducated, people are quick to judge things that they are ignorant of. I know this based on first hand knowledge and experience about how it to be
It is a melancholy hearing about the issue of homelessness worldwide. There are countless homeless people on the streets of these large cities. So we ask ourselves; why are people still without homes when new jobs are being created everyday or when unemployment still has not reached zero? This seems to be an ever haunting problem even though it would be so easy to erase it. I think we have reached our limits of dealing with thousands of homeless people blocking doorsteps and sidewalks disturbing us with their begging hands. While most claim to use the money we provide them to buy food or shelter, most will use it feed their addictions. Do you want your money being spent on cigarettes and alcohol? Why should we have to give
Homeless people are not always the victims that the media have portrayed them to be. The alarming fact is that many of the homeless are there by choice. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to portray all homeless people as lazy people who dont want to take care of themselves. This couldn't be further from the truth. In my experience with the homeless they are usually either in bad health, addicted to drugs, mentally ill or a combination of any of these. To compound matters worse, they are usually without any type of legitimate income to support themselves.
Mark Cuic director of love and care mistrice says, “I think a lot of people think homeless people are nothing, they’re febal, they are not all there. I think people take that opportunity to take what they have or be him.”
Fear is a friend You get on the bus at around 11 PM. Finally, later than you’d like. Much, much later. But at least, tired as you are, you’re finally on, headed home for the evening. You hadn’t expected the group meeting for your final project to drag on for so long, but your group got distracted and started amicably chatting about everything that wasn’t related to the project before finally, barely, getting down to business. Upon leaving the library at last, you realize that you barely accomplished anything at all.
People become homeless for a number of reasons. These reasons are that create the stereotypes against those who have nothing in life. To judge people by what they do is normal. After all, what better way is there to judge a stranger by his words and his actions. The problem is when the homeless get judged wrongly, they are also treated unfairly. These stereotypes prevent the government and the society from giving the homeless the type of assistance that best suits to them. In order to clarify my thinking of homeless I have read three articles by different authors and they have different cases. These three articles discussed below and provide understanding on how the stereotypes of the homeless could be changed.
Homelessness is a serious problem in our society. Every night in our nation thousands of people are on the streets. This type of behavior is considered deviant because it does not reflect the norms and values of our society. In many cases the homeless people in our country are treated as total outcasts. Many of these people have severe mental disorders. Some are victims of an economy that has failed them. One may ask how such harsh situations exist in such an advanced society. With all the money and programs created to help people it seems ridiculous that this behavior exists. In a society where people have so much how is it possible that there are still people that have so little. The homeless are humans, no different than anyone else.
omelessness does not discriminate; it can affect people from all walks of life no matter sex, race, or religion. Last year alone, more than 3.5 million people experienced homelessness. Thirty five % affecting families with children and mental illness contribute to the lowest at twenty% (Students against Hunger). There are many different homeless population in between, such as military veterans, children under the age of 18, and those that have experienced domestic violence just to name a few. Homelessness is a social problem because it depletes federal funding, increases taxes, and can lead to criminal activity. The reaction to homelessness regarding the homeless is a social problem in itself. It seems that Americans view homelessness as a threat to society, an embarrassment, and sometimes one may even try to act as though the problem does not even exist. They turn their heads in shame, disgust, pity, distaste and fear.
Before I read “A Brother Lost” by Ashley Womble I viewed homeless people as greedy and lazy. I believe I only saw one real homeless person and to turn out he was a sex offender and all you seen was people giving him free food and giving him money, only if they knew… I didn’t know who to believe, if I should help anyone out. Actually one time I gave this guy $10 because I believed he needed more than me but to turn out as soon as I walked into Wawa everyone was like why’d you give him money? He’s using it for drugs, he just lies to make people feel bad for him. I also viewed so called homeless people lazy. Go help yourself, everyone has tough times push through it apply for jobs, don’t feel bad for yourself, provide for yourself. After reading
Homeless tend to be put into four different categories. The first category is the older alcoholic with personal problems. The second category is the deinstitutionalized bag lady. Next is the disorganized drug-taking panhandler. Finally, the homeless that tend to be just like you and me and are only in their situation outta luck. What seems to be the most difficult situation is that they are not given the necessary attention to solve the issue.
The motion picture Taylor’s Campaign, demonstrated how the homeless were constantly moving from place to place because they are kicked out of their location. They end up getting tickets for invading side walks or possessing shopping carts. They are unable to afford to pay for those tickets that they end up going to jail. Some are fine with that because at least they are no longer sleeping on the streets. There are more homeless than homeless shelters can home. Those that have no home can be put on a wait list, but in the meanwhile they have to continue to live in the streets. They cannot get a job because they have no address to put on their job application. Since they have no job they have to have some sort of income to survive, but what they do is not enough to keep them off the streets. Since, they look like homeless, they are treated with disrespect. People do not pay attention to them because others do not benefit. They have to make some sort of income to survive, but what they do is not enough to keep them off the streets or to eat. They cannot receive food because the government no longer funds outdoor distributions of meals. They blame it on how it can spread diseases when it is not an extreme issue like starvation. The homeless are treated with disrespect because of what they represent. They are associated with crime, in which crime rate is low. They see themselves as a family and feel they can only rely on each other because they only understand what is going. They seem to have no one else because their marriages have failed, mental health problems, or have abused alcohol or drugs. It makes it difficult to reintegrate society when their personal issues make it an obstacle every time. They are a community that sticks together because of the support they provide for one
Next, I agree with you on that some of them that are homeless are content with the way that they live. For example, there is this individual who walks around with his buggy in the community that I live in and who is quite disheveled
I believe homeless people should be helped by giving them useful resources, encouraging them to get an education, and guiding them to opportunities they can reference to succeed on their own.
Ever see a homeless man well think about him. These people were once smart or had someone they loved. There's a reason why their like that and they're human too. These people have feelings and when people get upset with them just think about it why not help them. Help them get back on their feet again because they can change the world.
The homeless stand down was an eye-opener experience for me. I had the opportunity to interact with several individuals, and one family. Initially I conducted some interviews with them to help complete the questionnaire; and the remainder of the time, I escorted the individuals and helped them choose items that were necessary for them. As I talked to each of them, I realized that the present state of these individuals were a product of the current economic situations. According to the National Homeless Coalition (2009), work factors are one of the many reasons why individuals are homeless. One of the individuals that I spoke to informed me that he was working a regular nine to five job at a construction site, but now due to the
