“Satan, his own guardian, would scarce have known him.” In The Scarlet Pimpernel Percy, who was secretly the Scarlet Pimpernel himself, took on many disguises in order save the aristocrats in France. The Scarlet Pimpernel disguised himself as diseased man, a slumberer, and a Jew so that he could help aristocrats escape without being detected by Bibot and Chauvelin, a sergeant and an agent who work for France. Throughout the novel, the Scarlet Pimpernel cleverly disguises himself as characters that people would generally overlook, in an attempt save several French aristocrats. His rescue missions reveal his clever nature and that he is a master of disguise. Although his final disguise would be senseless in modern day culture, it was ingenious during the time of the French Revolution. During this time period, class had a high influence on the public opinion. Since Jews, were considered lower class in France, they were frequently overlooked and ignored. When Chauvelin discovered that Percy was the Scarlett Pimpernel he went after him. Since, Percy could no longer be disguised as himself he took on the disguise of a Jew. Chauvelin did not suspect “The Jew” because he “had the habitual stoop” and a peculiarly dirty and loathsome appearance.” In today’s society a man with the same social status of “The Jew” would be someone such as homeless or lower class individual. On the television series Undercover Boss, the CEO of a large company disguises as a lower class worker within their company so that they can observe the day to day operations of the company without being detected. The disguise of a lower class citizen is used for many company and police operations, similarly to the way it was used by the Scarlet
