The thought of college is often overwhelming and fills a person’s head full of anxiety and stress. If you look back on what you have accomplished up to this point in your life this large step in life suddenly seems much smaller. I have been going to the same small private school all my life so many people could argue that I have been sheltered for most of my life or see the world through “tunnel vision.” Now all of this is entirely true, but throughout my high school years I have gradually become more of the person who I am today. For example, my junior year English teacher assigned my class the daunting task of a junior thesis. At first I thought this assignment was simply busy work and had no meaning to it, but as I began to pick a topic and research it I began to discover a possible …show more content…
That research is what ignited my interest in helping veterans. I would like to strive to help the men and women who put their lives on the line for their country every day by caring for them for them in the field of physical therapy. The scars of war never go away and the amazing stories that the veterans tell are truly extraordinary. Both of my grandparents are veterans who served in the medical field of the Air Force, my grandfather was a surgical technician and my grandmother was an x-ray technician. They have told me a countless amount of stories and a variety of things they have experienced because of their jobs. By becoming a physical therapist for veterans you don’t just change their lives, but your life will also be changed in the process. In addition to my growing interest in physical therapy, I am also intrigued by the field of nursing. This interest initially began when my grandfather, who I am very close to, became critically ill. My grandfather has always been a man I have admired the most and who I spent the most time with as a
Many students have had their own personal journeys into college. People experienced inspirations on their journey, whether it`s from a family member, mentor, educator or a personal event that occurred in their lives. In my journey into college I`ve been encouraged by many experiences in my life that has brought me to where I’m today. Various people have been a big part of my journey, giving me the encouragement I needed when I wanted to throw in the towel. For example, my mother, my educator Ms. Tynes and even my friends spoke life into when I thought school wasn’t meant for me.
In today’s society, veterans health care system is troubling to those aware of the problem in the outside world. Veterans are people that have sacrificed so much for the United States, yet receive very little in regards to their health and well-being, which poses a great problem. The U.S Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is very vocal about the lack of health care options for veterans and is actively trying to make reforms and provide solutions to these problems. The Department of Veterans Affairs "strives to ensure that you have access to all of your needed services wherever you receive your VA health care” (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016). They also claim that our veterans deserve the best care possible (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016). While all seems well, there are still a large percentage of veterans that get denied veteran services. The goal of this study is to pinpoint the disparities among veteran health care, shine a light on the issues to increase awareness within the community, and then attempt to create solutions for these problems. This can
Thank you for serving. I can not tell how glad I am that you served in either the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, or the Coast Guard. From any of the wars, WWI,WWII,The Korean War, Persian Gulf War, The War On Terrorism (Afghanistan), the Iraq War, and the Texas Revolution. Thank you for serving. I cannot say how thankful I am that you made the ultimate sacrifice. I have no idea what you have been through in war. I am so grateful that you fought so we could celebrate veterans day, memorial day and all other holidays that only the U.S celebrates.
The U.S Department Veteran’s Affairs (VA) provides a wide range of benefits for our service members, veterans and their families. Some of these benefits include but are not limited to include compensation, disability, education, and home loans. Throughout this paper I will discuss these benefits and the eligibility required to receive them. Eligibility for most VA benefits is based on type of discharge received through the military which is normally all discharges under other than dishonorable conditions.
The transition from high school to college is a dynamic time in one’s life that parallels the change from childhood to adulthood. Both of these changes are dramatic and, as a result, feelings are difficult to put down into words. A messy combination of emotions fills the heart, surfacing in strange ways. Confident high school seniors go right back to the bottom of the chain when entering college as freshmen. These students start all over, just like entering grade school or high school for the first time. The move up from high school to college signals the switch from dependence to self-sufficiency. From a personal point of view, going through the experience of graduating high school and transferring to a residential college campus at STLCOP, made me realize I was no longer a kid and capable of making my own decisions.
President Obama once said, “ Every veteran who has fought for America has a home in America”. Here, the President was stressing how important helping those who served is. However, every veteran in America does not have a home. In fact many are homeless. This is a very serve issue in America because, returning to normal life after serving is a very difficult task to complete alone. Additionally, many veterans return with a service related disability. Some of those are physical and others are mental or emotional. One of the most common is PTSD. PTSD stands for post traumatic stress disorder and occurs when one has witnessed a trauma that the brain cannot process. Stress is a trigger for PTSD and the dreams and vivid images only get worse with adrenaline. On top of
“Have you hugged a veteran today?” What about yesterday? most likely the answer is no. Veterans are important to our nations history and future, but we are not very good at recognizing this and following through with our promises. A quote from John Kennedy states that "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." We do not realize the impact they have on our lives today. They protected our freedom, they remind us of how deadly war really is, and most importantly they teach our future generations.
Countless men and women of war come home broken and battered daily, not knowing in which direction their lives will turn. There are Veterans who have become Disabled in the wars when they went to fight for the United States of America. After fighting for this country, many Veterans come home to fight physically or emotionally with their battle wounds or mental illnesses created from enduring the stress and pressure or war. Along with the side affects of war, Veterans come home to a health care system that constantly has failed to meet their needs. It is heartrending to watch the health care system fail, when it was designed to protect servicemen, but instead hinders them.
As a director and writer, it is my goal to tell stories that are buried within ourselves and within society. For this film, I am telling the story of how homeless veterans are forgotten by the world. In this way, I am tackling two major societal issues in one short film.
A job that is challenging is my uncle’s job “Veteranarian”. This job has really hard tasks that you need to learn. For example, you need to learn the medicine that the animals need, and the different viruses animals could get. Also it’s really challenging because if you dont give the right medication to the animal they will die. And is your responsibility to whatever happens to the animal. Also i your responsibility to wake up early and go work. This would prevent from animals dying. For example, if you don’t get to work on time there could be a animal you need to cure, but once you get there is probably too late. And if something actually happens to the animal, you need to take responsibility for the consequences. Veteranarian is also difficult,
Bam! The sounds of gunshots filled the air. Being used are terrible weapons far worse than we could ever imagine. Hundreds of wounded soldiers scattered across the battlefield. Dozens of casualties. “Why do they do it?” you may ask. “Why do thousands of soldiers risk their lives everyday and go to war just to keep us safe?” They do it for our freedom. Soldiers battle knowing they are protecting this amazing country of The United States of America. These soldiers and veterans have all put their lives in danger doing their job. We as citizens need to thank them for all their hard work, their courage, and their blood, sweat, and tears to achieve the goal of freedom.
Have you ever seen the loss of hope in the eyes of a homeless veteran? I have and it is an awful thing, knowing a veteran have served time for your freedom and can’t even get their life together. A veteran living on the streets of Louisville feels hopeless and helpless. Having an honorable discharge doesn’t guarantee great job. Signing up for a class is confusing when you are not computer literate. Filling out the right forms and applications to get student aid is a hard and a confusing process, without someone’s help, even for the most experienced computer person. Knowing what you’re good at after working for the military can be a bit confusing. Coming back to civilian life after 4-20 yrs. can be overwhelming. Where do I turn to now? I believe as a combat veteran that struggled with these questions, there needs to be more help for veterans from the community. Getting help with a good job, a better education, and a nice home to live in is what a
The first quarter of my freshman year of college has flown by, and I anticipate the rest of my college years to do the same. With this thought in mind, I intend to create a lasting college experience, while also discovering what my future entails. As I transitioned out of high school, I embraced this opportunity to pursue further education as an important life decision.
It was once said by a famous poetic philosopher, Lao Tzu, that “ The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”, and one of those many steps begins with the foundation of entering high school. Adapting to the swift and major changes of high school engulfed my mind with excitement and anticipation. Though the expedition of transitioning from high school to college has only merely begun, the lessons learned throughout my time in high school has enabled me to not only share my adolescent experiences and outcomes, but to also create a new account of myself within college.
Coursework is hardly the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what distinguishes me from a typical high school student. Living on a college campus comes with a number of unique opportunities that I would never have had previously. As a high school junior, I had the
