The 40 assets they are a list of set skills, experiences, relationships, and behavioral acts young people should have in their life. The Search Institute released these in 1990. John is lacking restraint, family support, and school engagement; the absence of these assets affect his life by not helping him grow and get the things he needs to become successful. To start, even though John changes greatly throughout the book, he doesn’t change his attendance at school and his engagement at school. School Engagement is an important asset because it builds responsibility, intelligence, and social skills. An example of John not caring about his school is he always skips. “The next day we cut school...” ( Zindel p.50 ). This is self explanatory about how this tells about how they skips school and aren’t engaged. Furthermore, John makes bombs made out of firecrackers and he puts them in the …show more content…
John is a heavy drinker for his age. This is a really important asset for John to have because he needs to learn how to make good decisions for his future. Drinking at his age is not a very good decision. John doesn't know how to make good decisions and this could affect him in the future. For example, “I refuse to talk to him for five minutes while I drink a chocolate drink I bought with my own money while John cashed the check got a six pack of beer and a pack cigarettes” ( Zindel p. 44 ). John spends his money on alcohol and cigarettes. This is a bad decision because he buys these thing with Mr. Pignati’s own money. He uses other peoples money for his alcohol and cigarettes. Another example, “The only thing I did better than him was drink beer” ( Zindel p. 94 ). John is referring to the only thing he did better than his brother, Kenneth, was drink beer. He says this as if he is proud and I don’t think he should be proud of this. John needs to be able to have Restraint so he can grow up and make good decisions and control
…I’ve become convinced that there are some clear and powerful measures that can be taken during this crucial time in a young person’s life. Some of the ones that helped me come to mind, from finding strong mentors to being entrusted with responsibilities that forced me to get serious about my behavior. (Moore 179)
It is hard to have a healthy relationship with someone when they are controlled by alcohol. The relationship between John Purcell and his son had drifted apart more and more by his actions and his choice of being alcoholic. As inconsiderate as John he says to a curate "Three dollars! Why, I could have taken Johnny to a burlesque show for less than that." There is a little boy present and their parents do not want their children exposed to such inappropriate jokes like John often expressed. John is inconsiderate therefore he does things without thinking. His recklessness continued when he met another untrustworthy father at the meeting. At that point when the outsider offered him a drink, he expected it happily expressing “You’re a lifesaver,” because of his dependence on alcohol he humiliated his child much further; and had not taken his wife’s oath of being on his best conduct into thought. When he went up the stairs to receive Johnny’s reward, on the way he trips and falls making his son embarrassed and
Over the course of the story, Junior faced many challenging obstacles, but the ones that really hurt and affected him were those related to alcohol. In the novel, we learned many things about Junior’s best friend Rowdy such as he had an aggressive and mean personality and that he was being beat by his father. His father not only beat Rowdy, but he also beat Rowdy’s mom when he drank alcohol. His heavy drinking changed his mood which resulted in rage. Introducing the readers to Rowdy’s father is important because it teaches them one of the effects that alcohol can have on people. In the story Junior recalls, “I have to, I guess, especially since Rowdy is having one of the worst summers of his life. His father is drinking hard and throwing hard punches, so Rowdy and his mother are always walking around with bruised and bloody faces.” (Alexie 16). This is an important quote because it teaches the reader the effect alcohol can have on a person's mood. Under the influence, Rowdy’s father became a different person and his actions became more aggressive. While an alcoholic's actions under the influence should not be excused
Every single day, the average human will make thousands of decisions; most will help them become who they want to be, while others will take them toward trouble. In 1990, the Search Institute released a list of 40 Developmental Assets that young adults need in order to develop into contributing members of society. Some of which are in the individual’s control, while others aren’t. John Conlan, a character in the novel The Pigman by Paul Zindel, is a sophomore attending Franklin High who hates school and has an abusive father, but is noticeably “handsome.” After meeting a man named Angelo Pignati, things start to brighten up for him. Although John is not always Honest, he is still able to maintain a Positive Peer Influence with Lorraine Jensen
John's life seemed to be one major drama after another; he didn't have a good male role model as a kid, and it seems he never was able to get on track. What was amazing about his life was the number of problems that he seemed to get into and how he wriggled out of them (with the help of a friendly person who just happened to meet him) only to run into more problems.
and spanned a course of some twenty years. Two decades of conflict and disharmony that seemed to connect with many of the attendees displayed by their numerous head nods and looks of shared shame. He said he never intended to become an alcoholic. He was just trying to “fit in” with friends. Another reason given for using alcohol was to squash the stress and anxieties all too familiar with the formative years of pre-adulthood. “Little did I know”, he said that he was setting the stage for how to handle all his subsequent problems later in life.
The Similarity in The Glass Castle and My Papa’s Waltz Do you think every family is different and have no similarities at all or are they more similar than you think? Jeannette and the little boy in the poem have a lot more frequent dilemma than you think. The two have fathers that are alcoholics. Both of the children have different thoughts about their families.
The major development seen in John’s character takes place near the end of the story, as he seeks a more pure life in a remote location. John feels as though he’s been poisoned by this new civilization “I ate civilization. It poisoned me; I was defiled. And then, I ate my own wickedness.” (241). He wants to not only live a noble life, but to make this life on his own, so chooses an abandoned lighthouse, far enough away from the disaster of a community he views Brave New World as a negative place with negative ideas. This is a major change from the identity he showed before being poisoned by this civilization, but once again he stays true to his values by leading this new life on his own. John’s strong moral values prove to be the one constant in his character.
He again establishes his ethos by revealing his first-hand experiences dealing with the effects of alcohol abuse. Additionally, he employs diction through words with strong negative connotations in order to further emphasize his disdain toward his father. For instance, Sanders illustrates how alcohol would transform his father from a capable man into a “pathetic, frightening, deceitful” (12) man. Put in such stark terms, Sanders leaves his readers no choice but to confront the ugly truth behind alcoholism. Sanders’ word choice creates a condescending tone that emphasizes the shame Sanders had felt as a
First, John Barton has multitudinous social pressures that have impacted him by ruining his true identity, not being able to make friends without his parents’ expectations being broken, and having to deal with occhiolism. To begin with, John has been ruining his identity because of his school reputation. He is the captain of St Anthony, popular, and good-looking. So, everyone expects him to act a certain way when really John is a depressed kid who isn’t ambitious. Therefore, when others want him to act a certain way he forgets his true personality and identity and acts the way others demand. Moreover, another pressure that impacts John is not being able to make friends because his parents expect different qualities in a friend than John. His
“Under the influence: Paying the price of my father’s booze” is an essay that was written by the author Scott Russell Sanders. He expressed his grievous feeling towards his father’s drinking habit and used both comparison and allegories to explain how serious his father’s alcoholism was and the negative effects he had during his childhood. Sander described his father as a demon after he had a drink which shows the horror that can be caused if a family has an alcoholic father. For instance, in the passage, Sander says “I use the past tense not because he ever quit drinking but because he quit living” that implies how his father’s alcoholism behavior ruined his life while he was in his childhood. Furthermore, there were a lot of disappointments going on in his family due to his father’s serious alcoholism.
When the boy poor’s the food on himself, his actions have proven that intoxication can cause messiness. Similarly the boy’s actions have been portrayed to exaggerate the poor actions alcohol can lead to. This reaching out to other adolescence and parents showing them how the adolescence could turn out. Whereas this wouldn't affect adults because they have already had their experience with irresponsible drinking.

As a symbol of long lasting commitment to your one true love until death do us part. My great grandmother’s wedding ring has been passed down and is currently in my mother's possession since she is the oldest daughter. I hope that on my wedding day the ring will be passed down to me even though my sister is the oldest between the two of us. It’s very special to me because I love nothing more then imagining my own wedding someday in the near future and hope this heirloom that signifies long lasting love and commitment is passed down to me.
