CHAPTER TWO
2:0 LITERATURE REVIEW
2:1 Conceptual Definition of key words;
2:1:1Introduction.
Through this study, the key words include science subject, dropout and students. In order this study to be well understood, the key words are defined below.
2:1:2Science subject
According to secondary school curriculum (2007) science subjects include biology, chemistry and physics
According to Duane T.Gish(vital articles on science/creation) Define science as search for truth. The single most important principles of science education is the one that instruct students to identify assumptions, use critical thinking, make logical deductions and consider alternative explanation. Also in more elaboration, For the purpose of my study, Science subjects are among lessons which learnt in secondary school which prepare individual to be scientist in the future. Those lessons are Biology, Chemistry and Physics. 2:1:3Dropout According to my study, Dropout refer to those students who registered in secondary school(form one) in all subjects(science and arts) but when they reach form three they stop taking science subjects and take only arts, also include those who stop science courses/subjects after completed form four.
2:1:4Students
From Cambridge University, Define Student as person who is learning at college or university
1. Define science – Science is the development of concepts about the natural world , often by using the scientific method
When it comes to high school dropout rates, there are many factors that need to be considered before attempting to suggest a reason, and a solution to the issue. One of the first
What exactly is a dropout? Although difficult to define, a dropout is considered a student who leaves school for any reason and does not continue on into any other type of schooling (United States Department of
Science is important to learn and study because it helps up to understand how things are created and function in the world. Events that happen in the natural world are explained based off of observation and experience.
Standard: K-2, Science is a way of knowing… Science knowledge helps us know about the world.
Status dropout rates are reported by the NCES (The U.S. National Center for Education Statistics) as proportion of young adult’s ages 16-24 not currently enrolled in school who have not completed a high school diploma or equivalent. Dropout rates status differ by many demographic factors, including gender, race, and ethnicity, immigration status, and geographic location. In the United States dropout rates are higher in males than females. Hispanics have the higher rate, followed by African Americans, non-Hispanic, whites, and Asian Americans.
#1. The dirt considered living because it has all the kingdoms of life in it.
High school dropout rate is a significant indicator of future success in life. For high school dropouts, it is harder to find jobs and earn as much money as their graduated peers. On the outside looking in, not being able to graduate is usually associated with school performance, socioeconomic status, parents’ education level and/or lack of motivation. Moreover, there are also underlying factors of race and gender and they both affect performance in high school immensely. In order to study dropout rates, focus should be put on the group of students at risk of dropping out.
Natural sciences: These are science classes which explain to us how the world or universe functions. Some of these classes are biology, chemistry or Astronomy.
has shown that if the dropout rate continues at its current pace, it will reach
To understand more about school dropout I continue to search for more articles in academic search premier, and then I ran into article written by Azzam, Amy M. The author states that, a “Divers youth, ages 16-25, who had failed to complete high school.” The author discovered that approximately “About one-third of all high school students in the United Sates fail to graduate” (91). Based on this article, the dropout rates vary among the races. The dropout rate among Black and Hispanic are fifty percent. She describes that the reasons for students dropping out from high school are including, “Students were bored, missed too many days, spent time with people who weren’t interested in school, had too much freedom, and not supervision.”
What is Science? When it comes to the word ‘science’ most of the people have some kind of knowledge about science or when they think of it there is some kind of image related to it, a theory, scientific words or scientific research (Beyond Conservation, n.d.). Many different sorts of ideas float into an individual’s mind. Every individual has a different perception about science and how he/she perceives it. It illustrates that each person can identify science in some form. It indicates that the ‘science’ plays a vital role in our everyday lives (Lederman & Tobin, 2002). It seems that everyone can identify science but cannot differentiate it correctly from pseudo-science and non-science (Park, 1986). This essay will address the difference between science, non-science and pseudo-science. Then it will discuss possible responses to the question that what should we do when there is a clash between scientific explanation and non-scientific explanation. Then it will present a brief examination about the correct non-scientific explanation.
Science is the knowledge gained by a systematic study, knowledge which then becomes facts or principles. In the systematic study; the first step is observation, the second step hypothesis, the third step experimentation to test the hypothesis, and lastly the conclusion whether or not the hypothesis holds true. These steps have been ingrained into every student of science, as the basic pathway to scientific discovery. This pathway holds not decision as to good or evil intention of the experiment. Though, there are always repercussions of scientific experiments. They range from the most simplistic realizations of the difference between acid and water to the principle that Earth is not the center of
Thesis Statement: More and more students drop out each year. Those who dropped out have various reasons. The alarming rates of drop outs have led them to a bleak future wherein such incident requires the attention and immediate action of various school authorities.
The nature and process of science are a collection of things, ideas, and guidelines. “The purpose of science is to learn about and understand our universe more completely” (Science works in specific ways, 3). Science works with evidence from our world. If it doesn’t come from the natural world, it isn’t science. You need to be creative and have flexible thoughts and ideas if you want to be a scientist. Science always brings up new ideas and theories and if you aren’t flexible to those ideas you can’t be a scientist. Science has been in our world for a long time. It is deep into our history and our cultures. The principals of science; are all about understanding our world using the evidence we collect. If we can’t collect evidence on something we simply cannot understand it. If we don’t understanding something about our world, science says that we can learn about it by collecting evidence (Science has principals, 4). Science is a process; it takes time. You don’t immediately come to a conclusion for your hypothesis a few minutes
