Hi, I’m Portia and I will be talking to you about the deadliest earthquake in the world. This earthquake occurred on the 23rd of January in 1556 and it was located in the Shaanxi Province in China. The earthquake occurred in the late evening but only lasted a few seconds, with aftershocks. It took place during the reign of Emperor Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty and is often called the Jiajing Great earthquake. The Wei River Valley was the epicentre, near the cities of Huaxian, Huayin and Weinan, which also suffered huge damage.
Some interesting facts are that the earthquake was only approximately 8-8.3 on the Richter Scale but it was the deadliest earthquake ever recorded and the 3rd deadliest natural disaster ever.

Northern California. High intensity shaking was felt stretching from Salinas Valley to Eureka on the North Coast. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was one of the worst and most fatal earthquakes in both California’s and the United States’ history.
The damages were catastrophic as houses lay in ruin and debris littered the roads. There were mudslides and fallen rocks that paved the roads and made them impassible for vehicles to get through. Ultimately by the roads being clogged up the response time by rescue workers and essential personal were hampered. This also made it exceptionally difficult for supplies to be rushed to the locations for the earthquake survivors. As some were digging and excavating for survivors they were being halted by aftershocks and falling debris from above. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake that affected around 43,000 people with 2,211 aftershocks that ended up killing a total of 185 people. Earthquakes are known as one of the most dangerous natural disasters. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake struck the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on April 18 with an estimated moment magnitude of 7.8 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI . Severe shaking was felt from Eureka on the North Coast to the Salinas Valley, an agricultural region to the south of the San Francisco Bay Area. Devastating fires soon broke out in the city and lasted for several days. As a result, about 3,000 people died and over 80% of the city of San Francisco was destroyed. The events are remembered as one of the worst and deadliest natural disasters in the history of the United States. The death toll remains the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history and high in the lists of American urban disasters.
The Valdivia Earthquake occurred on the 22nd of May 1960 in Valdivia, Chile. It is the most powerful earthquake ever recorded with a magnitude of 9.5. The earthquake resulted in many natural disasters not only in other parts of Chile but in other countries as well.

The San Francisco earthquake was the first time man had ever seen the most disaster city of the state of California had ever seen. Most people think that it took hours and hours but it took a minute. But no one would ever know. And now the greatest disaster ever. But it took so many lives though.
There is one very significant earthquake on the list which happened on March 28 1964. The depth of it was approximately 15 mi and the tsunamis were created by the ocean floor shifts causing many of the deaths and injuries and $2.3billions today dollars of property lost. The earthquake had the magnitude of 9.2 and it lasted for four minutes and thirty- eight seconds. In May 2008, a memorial tragedy has carved our heart. More than 60,000 of our compatriots died in the Great Sichuan Earthquake. It was a once-in-a-year strong earthquake registering a magnitude of 7.8 measured in the Richter scale.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake registered magnitude 8.3, at 7:54 p.m. local time (4 p.m. PDT) on Wednesday. The quake lasted for approximately three minutes.
