Scruton analyzes popular music by discussing its lack of aesthetic and moral intention and people's responses to it. Scruton believes that the harmony and melody heard in today's music are nonexistent. He also thinks the rhythm of music has changed to just a beat. These three components, harmony, melody, and rhythm are essential to undergo a knowledgeable experience in music (127). These mechanisms allow one to enter into a musical world that is unrestricted. This world portrays one of order as well as freedom. Today, however, audiences are more concerned about listening to the lyrics of a song than listening to the music itself. It indicates that music is always in key, meaning music is contained in a melodic and harmonic system. Music has gained a vast importance in the world because of its ability to bring people together from different walks of life. Music is heard everywhere from sporting events to weddings and even funerals. It is used to for religious purposes and to celebrate life (124). Music is heard by the ear from an imaginary space, it is not present to people in a way that is here and now. People respond to this distant sound of music in a sympathetic way through gestures such as singing and dancing (123). Scruton states, "We do what we do in response to the sounds that we hear when we attend to them aesthetically" (125). When people hear a song it evokes a feeling inside them that makes them respond in a way that shows appreciation to what is heard (123). An individual who hears a song is entitled to his or her own tastes and opinions. However, the kind of music people like and listen to matters when searching for the right way to live.
