Currently, there are more than 720 licensed retirement homes in Ontario (ORCA, 2017). Major chains within the retirement home industry include Revera, which owns and operates 63 retirement communities (Paul, 2016). The largest seniors housing provider in Canada is Chartwells Retirement Residences, which has properties in Quebec, Ontario, B.C., and Alberta (Lewington, 2013). Another major company is Seasons Retirement Communities, which has 11 locations in Ontario, and focuses on an active lifestyle, culinary experience, exceptional service, quality care and memory care (“Seasons Retirement”, n.d.). Schlegel will also concentrate on increasing brand and industry exposure in the hospitality career market. Over the next 3-5 years, Schlegel Village will aim to have hospitality graduates in upper-level management in various villages. Their established leadership development program will ensure that hospitality graduates are familiar with and interested in employment and management opportunities within their organization.
Strategy #1
Focus on attracting current hospitality students to Schlegel Villages through short-term/part-time employment.
The focus of this strategy is highlighting the position attributes as the main competitive advantage of Schlegel Villages. This includes flexible hours, vacations/sabbaticals, weekend availability, level of pay, quality of compensation and benefits packages. It will evaluate students based on their skills and can incorporate Robert Katz’s three skill approach to assess them: technical skills, human skills and conceptual skills (Virkus, 2009). It will focus on matching students to their preferred entry-level jobs, especially in the summer or part-time during the school year.
