Anthony Hebdo States of Consciousness Response Selective Attention is a process whereby the brain selectively filters out large amounts of sensory information to focus on just one message ("What is Selective Attention, 2018). Our minds focus on one thing out of many and we lose focus on everything else around us. In the video, it wanted us to count the number of basketball passes between the white team. All the while there is another team of people wearing black doing the exact same time. This video wanted you to be so focused on the passes from the white team that you miss the person dressed like a gorilla that dances in the middle towards the end of the video. Change Blindness is a perceptual phenomenon that occurs when a change in a visual stimulus is introduced and the observer does not notice it ("Change blindness", 2018). This phenomenon is when our minds are focused on other things and we miss what is going on right in front of us. In the video, you see time and time again how one guy could switch with another and the person be none the wiser. It got even better when at the end, they use all three people and the guys switch out, come back then all three of them take a …show more content…
Granted per the video I counted one extra pass somewhere. I’ve seen other videos like this one before, in my opinion there weren’t enough people to make it as confusing or as hard as they wanted it to. In the second video change blindness, I did also see the switches. But, then again, I could see the legs walking behind the sign. Also, I knew what was coming because they stated so at the beginning of the video. This video I could see being more of a problem for me potentially. When we really focus on things it becomes easy to miss things around us or in this case right in front of us. It’s amazing how through these videos we get to see how the brain works and what it does in these
The speaker of the video Beau Lotto: Optical illusions show how we see uses a more optical approach to grasp the audience’s attention. At the beginning of the video he show’s colored dots to the audience and asks them to find the matching color on each board that have a different color background. Lotto gives us a question to ponder about, “why is context everything?” He goes on showing a visual in black and white and how often times without color we may not be able to interpret the image until the color is added. The speaker states that it’s not what we see that is reality, but the way or processing information with the visual aspect is how we see reality.
Despite the new discoveries in medicine whether it is a new vaccine or antibiotic, the most basic components for disease prevention and death in humans depends on a good nutrition and access to clean water. The RX for Survival: Back to the Basics video depicts how both an inadequate nutrition and malnutrition can impaired a child’s physically and developmentally. It is estimated that over 100 million children in the world are undernourished and causing the death of more than “one third” of the children (WHO). Furthermore, the consumption of contaminated water, which carries disease organism, exacerbates the mortality rate among children.
Many people make an assumption they are not blind to life itself whether ignorance plays a part or pride. In Cathedral by Raymond Carver, it describes a few myths that society has portrayed and opinions of the visual impaired. The main focus is getting to know the person before drawing a conclusion. Its not fair to anyone to be neglected whether you are visual impaired or have the functionality of what is considered to be a normal human being.
Attention is considered to be a core cognitive process, it refers to how people actively process specific information in the environment. Attention refers to how people select from information and stimuli in the environment, facilitating processing of some of the stimuli and inhibiting processing of others. "Everyone knows what attention is, it is the taking possession by the mind in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought...It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal effectively with others, and is a condition which has a real opposite in the confused, dazed, scatterbrained state. “This definition of attention was proposed by psychologist William James (1890). This review will focus on literature that gives explanation to selective attention. Selective attention refers to the process where a person is able to select out of many stimuli and focus on the one they want and ignore other stimuli.
In early observation of change blindness was made in 19th century when the film was edited and introduced. The editor came to realize that those watching it were not noticing the changed background (Norman, 2006). This made Williams James to become the first person to mention the lack of ability to detect the changes according to principles of psychology.
Monday not long after arriving at the office SAC Mark Pro received a phone call concerning assistance from the GBI for a death in Adel. CSS Kellyn Wilkes was the CSS on call. The other intern “Olivia” and I rode with CSS Wilkes to the scene. Upon arrival, we were still waiting on a search warrant before entering the house. However, since pictures are always taken before entering a house in death investigations we took pictures from different distances as well as vehicles on the property before entering the residence. Additionally, DNA swabs were taken before entering the home as well. I watched and observed as evidence was obtained and as the residence was searched. Afterward, evidenced was logged into an online database and left with the Adel Sherriff department.
After watching the video Precious Knowledge, the first example of ethnic studies being threatened/ facing elimination is that senate is passing bills like 2881 that act against diversity and programs that support and culture beyond what is sought to be “fit” in the American educational system. Programs that promote ethnic studies gives students the pride and knowledge of where they have come from and therefore they feel more engaged in the classroom. Leaders like Tom Horne have the right to their own opinion but are being oppressive by not embracing the culture of different ethnic groups. By not attending these classes and trying to relate to these diverse communities; he is creating a dystopia to the American youth. Political leaders should
The interaction of object- and space-based covert visual attention in an attentional cuing task – a replication of Egly, Driver and Rafal (1994)
The individuals that were blind viewed their disability as a liability. In the first video, the girl felt restricted because she didn't know how to operate in the real world. In the second video, the girl felt very overwhelmed when she was in the big store trying to find different things. In the third video, the family felt like they didn't know how the were supposed to live their own lives with their son's disability. However, each situation adapted and learned how to live life in this way.
Change blindness is a phenomenon in attention where drastic changes to a scene can go unnoticed. This is important to the field of Human Sensation and Perception because it helps illustrate how a visual scene is processed. Specifically it shows how even if there is direct attention to a scene, there are times when drastic changes can occur without perception of the change occurring. With extensive research already conducted illustrating this effect, new research has recently been conducted studying different types of scene changes in the hopes of understanding which changes are easier or harder to notice. The results of these studies were quantified by the measurement of change detection time (usually reported in seconds). This subset of change blindness research has far-reaching practical applications, especially in the field of security and law enforcement. By applying the knowledge of which type of stimuli lead to longer change detection times training programs could be developed that allow this population to improve their observation skills.
It doesn’t matter if someone is blind or deaf for one to see what is all around they have to use other senses no one knows exist until the time is needed for one rely on it. One learns to rely on other senses to survive once one sense fails. However, teaching someone who can see and hear how to use their other senses can be complicated if they are not receptive to the teacher, or in other cases teach a person to see beyond their normal sight to open up their senses.
Abrupt appearance of an object within peripheral visual fields are sudden onset distractors (SOD) and they can have effects on attention and reaction times. Attentional capture occurs when a distractor stimulus appears in a field of vision and pulls focus away from the task at hand. This has the effect of increasing reaction times as it diverts a subject’s attention while the brain registers and processes the new information. When the brain is focussed upon a specific task the distractor captures attention and thus can increase reaction time through this visual processing mechanism. This demonstrates automaticity, a reflex which is both not inhibited by increasing cognitive load (load-insensitivity criterion) and not voluntarily controlled (intentionality criterion). The attentional
The phenomenon of blindsight has far reaching implications regarding consciousness, awareness and the "I" function. These studies demonstrate that receiving and interpreting visual inputs is independent of our awareness of that input. Does this imply that there is a separate mechanism of "consciousness" which can be disengaged from our senses? Marcel proposes that this loss of visual consciousness results from the
Anna, all of your sentences were spot on. I can agree with you on not wanting to travel any more than 30 minutes to get to my future job. I also mentioned how it is important to pay close attention to all details. I think it is important to know pay because it is important that you are being paid fairly and as promised. Lastly, it is imperative to read all words in a job description to ensure you know exactly what you are applying for.
Upon viewing the various illusions from either website, my brain became surprised at what it couldn't comprehend. Throughout adolescent years, similar versions of these optical illusions were often used as tools for teaching young students about perception, myself included. Unlike the other illusions, the young and elderly woman is an image that I was able to easily recognize. Therefore, the image of the young and elderly woman being familiar to me, allowed my brain's perception to see both of the images. However, the turning of the Charlie Chaplain mask presented me with the utmost difficulty. Regrettably, I was unable to alter my perception of the mask as it rotated on the screen, and was 'forced' into seeing the solitary mask as two opposed
