Self-doubt and Well-being at Work As an indicator of negative affect, self-doubt has been found to be positively correlated with social anxiety and defensive pessimism, and negatively related to self-esteem (Oleson, Poehlmann, Yost, Lynch & Arkin. 2000). With the emerging interests in self-doubt, researchers have also been investigating the effects of self-doubt on ones’ well-being. A prior research by Carroll, Arkin and Shade (2011) indicates that self-doubt negatively predicts career potential test score. Therefore, self-doubt might potentially lead to negative work outcomes. Self-doubt refers to the uncertain feeling of one’s abilities to accomplish a task (De Cramer, Sedikides, 2005). Over the years, researchers have operationalized …show more content…
Some examples are the 2013 Hong Kong Docks Strike and the 2016 Verizon Workers Strike in the United States (Cough, 2013; DiMaggio, 2017). On the other hand, the 2010 Foxconn Shenzhen Factory manufacturing workers’ series of suicides cases has drawn global attention – 18 attempted suicides resulted in 14 dead (Tam, 2010). All these cases/events reveal that low SES workers might have been forced to tolerate such negative situations and poor working conditions compared to their higher SES counterparts. Currently, more than half of population has participated in the global workforce. However, the global Gini index is 0.65 (World bank, 2016), which is considered as high income inequality. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics (2017), over 60% of its population has been participating in the labor force, but nearly 33% of its working families have been considered as low-income families. / Additionally, over 78.2 million workers were paid hourly in 2015, and 870,000 of them only earned the exact minimum wage in the same year. Research on the effects of SES on well-being is well-established. González Swanson, Lynch & Williams (2016) find that SES is a positive predictor of one’s job satisfaction. Figure 1. presents a conceptual model of low SES workers. Therefore, a research question has been posited that: Does SES moderate effect
“An appreciation of the power of self-justification helps us understand, therefore, why people who have low self-esteem, or who simply believe that they are incompetent in some domain, are not totally overjoyed when they do something well.” (p..
The motivation that results from the doubt or disbelief of others is very powerful and it has the ability to make the impossible a reality. We have all heard the stories of the wealthy businessmen and the famous sports athletes who defied the little chance they had to succeed in life. These are true examples of what a person can accomplish when he uses the doubt of others to motivate himself to accomplish an extremely difficult goal. The significance and pleasure of this type of motivation can not be denied. However, it is even more important for a person to be internally motivated and not have to rely on the influence of others.
The power of self-doubt and self-confidence is equal as compelling in strength. It’s just a matter of which force has the stronger pull on one’s mind. Throughout high school, I’ve always doubted my abilities and intelligence by comparing myself to others. They must’ve been born with the gift of ingenuity, while I born with a deficit of it. Eventually, the envy of how some peoples’ brains acquired knowledge boiled and poisoned my thoughts. My mind was polluted with the idea that I was not capable of such gift. However, that all changed because of one woman who poured all of her encouragement and faith into me. She was the panacea of my toxic conviction and taught me that it was a matter of perception and hard work and self-confidence.
While certainty can help an individual stick to a goal, it can also be a mask that covers creative thinking and new ideas that doubt can spring forward and bring to
Certainity and doubt both play a role in one’s life decision making. Certainty focuses on absolution, allowing one to focus on their path and accomplish what they desire. Doubt, however, focuses changing one’s mindset, allowing anyone or themselves to change their mindset and stray away from their goal. Certainty can lead one to success while doubt can stray one away from their goal because certainty allows one to focus on their goal while doubt allows other people, or themselves, to stray one away from their goal.
Being evaluated can be a scary procedure. Needlessly to say it can be even scarier to self-evaluate oneself. However, depending on the outlook of the self-evaluator, the evaluation of one’s own self can be enlightening, educational and a chance to grow. However, on the other hand, self-assessment of one’s own self can be a daunting process that leads to denial that there is a need for improvement.
In my unit 2 Assignment, for the Interpersonal Communication course, the class was to define one change you would like to make to your self-perception. What I chose was self-doubt. The Professor
The main barriers to the successful use of coaching can be caused by individual self-doubt. Hindmarch (2008) defines self-doubt as the negative feeling associated with evaluating one’s abilities and perceiving them as inadequate to carry out a piece of work effectively. Therefore, this barrier is a work related phenomenon which may affect performance at work in an adverse way. Leonardeli and Arkin (2002) found that when doubts about one’s abilities are not addressed, then damage to self-esteem can follow. This can develop into a negative evaluation of one’s self at a more profound level, and therefore potentially be more damaging. It seems that positive beliefs about oneself may augment performance. Taylor and brown (1985) indicate that excessively positive self-evaluation are characteristics of normal individuals that helps lead to
The idea of self is a significant part of every individual’s life. The way we visualise ourselves can be altered by feelings of self worth and self esteem and lead to a change or influence in the way we act. The evaluation of one’s attitude towards self can be seen to be improved by the individual believing they are worthy which could lead to a self fulfilling prophecy. The better-than-average effect can depict this theory by assessing individuals on their motivational bias and attributes (Brown, 2011). In this particular study, participants are given a questionnaire regarding ten traits, half of high importance and half of low importance. They were then told to rate these attributes on importance of possession. As predicted, the results show that the
Self-awareness is a terminology that has been widely discussed in not only psychological but also business and managerial perspectives. There are a number of authors trying to propose different definitions of it.
Having low self-confidence can be harmful to a person’s well being. It can cause negative feelings such as, anxiety, anger and sadness. It can inhibit a person’s ability to put effort into work, causing their grades to drop even further. It can cause the student to have troubles making new
Perceptions of support seem to foster positive emotions in employees and may be strongly associated with their psychological well-being (Ryff & Singer, 1998) Conceptual dimensions of psychological well-being are close to the components of authenticity. In a study of 80 students, Kernis and Goldman (2005) found significant correlations between authenticity and various psychological wellbeing measures (such as self-esteem and life satisfaction). In another study of 111 students, they found that authenticity sub-scales were generally related to those of psychological well-being. Kernis and Goldman (2005) also reported positive relationships between the components of authenticity and psychological well-being. Some recent works indicate support
Doubt; a word not many people seem to fully grasp. Many see it as hesitations equal; thinking about a choice carefully before making a decision. However, doubt digs deeper than that, whereas hesitation puts the question of “should I do this” in the head, doubt puts the question of “can I do this” in the head, a much more vile and crippling question. Doubt is more sinister and dark than other words that bear negative connotations for many reasons, one of which being that doubt doesn’t need attention or praise. Doubt much prefers to sit on the sidelines inconspicuously, letting hate and disgust take the spotlight while he stealthily pulls the strings of…what exactly? Doubts motives are not fully understood by many. Doubt is not as bold or brash as hatred, or as noxious or virulent as disgust. If doubt doesn’t act like other negative thoughts, what exactly does doubt do? Maybe instead of introducing baleful thoughts, doubt instead prevents positive ideas from ever coming into reality. It is my understanding that doubt does not pull strings, but slashes them. Where hate would directly empowered itself, doubt would wither and disintegrate positivity, gaining power as positivity loses it. It is with this knowledge of doubt that I have constructed my own definition of it, the killer of dreams, the butcherer of success, and the drainer of confidence.
Job satisfaction is the very important factor in general quality of life because it is closely connected with working life (e.g. Argyle, 1989; Bang & Lee, 2006), with family life, everyday life, and mental health (Orpen, 1978; Schmitt and Bedeian, 1982; Faragher, Cass & Cooper, 2005). Level of job satisfaction is also highly related to turnover, absenteeism rate, work productivity or accomplishment (Muchinsky, 1977; Organ, 1977). Many researchers (e.g. Cherrington, 1994; Acorn, Ratner & Crawford, 1997; Ostroff, 1992; Spector, 1997) state that employees who experience high job satisfaction contribute to organisational commitment, job involvement, their physical, mental health and overall well-being are improved. Job dissatisfaction on the
Self-esteem is associated with depression, anxiety, motivation and general satisfaction with one’s life (Rosenberg, 1986).
