Section-1 INTRODUCTION Background of the study (Credibility in Wikipedia) A selfie is a type of self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. Selfies taken that involve multiple people are known as "group selfies" or "ussies". Robert Cornelius, an American pioneer in photography, produced a daguerreotype of himself in 1839 which is also one of the first photographs of a person. A photograph, painting, canvas, or drawing today is not the same as it was a decade ago. Technology has evolved to the point where we can photoshop a person into a picture, enlarge a person’s butt, or even whiten people’s teeth. At what point do those technological advances cross a line? With social media ranging from Facebook and Twitter to Instagram and Tumblr, do these media sites promote egotistical behavior? In January of 2013, John Paul Titlow discusses some of the disadvantages and advantages that Instagram has in his essay: “#Me: Instagram Narcissism and the Scourge of the Selfie” that was posted on a website called ReadWrite. Although Instagram was primarily created to simply share pictures, it has evolved to do much more than that. Some businesses use it to advertise, some people use it to share their art, but then there are some people use it to flaunt their own personal lives in the form of pictures. Titlow acknowledges that Instagram is a desirable way to share art and diverse imagery, but additionally acknowledges that it can be a place where one can promote their own self-popularity. He explains that Instagram has become remarkably important in people’s lives to the point that they cannot view life past those Instagram likes (Titlow). Ultimately, Titlow succeeds in emphasizing the issues that Instagram has created by reason of the way he expresses his text, while furthermore expressing who the audience of his essay is, and by making his overall purpose clear.
Snapchat is a mobile app that permits users to send and receive "self-destructing" photos and videos. Photos and videos taken with the app are called Snaps. Snapchat uses the device 's camera to capture Snaps and Wi-Fi or internet technology to send them. The app allows the sender to draw or insert text on the Snap and determine that for how many seconds (1-10) the recipient can view the snap before the file disappears from the recipient 's device. Messages can only be viewed once and during the viewing period, the recipient must maintain contact with the device 's touchscreen or else the Snap disappears.
They were both working together to make the first permanent image. Daguerre is known for his invention, the daguerreotype. A daguerreotype was the first commercially successful photographic process and was publicated. It was photo made on a silver surface sensitized with iodine was developed by exposure to mercury vapor. This is also known as the “daguerreian process.” In 1851, Frederick Scott Archer, a sculptor in London, improved photographic resolution by spreading a mixture of collodion (nitrated cotton dissolved in ether and alcohol) and chemicals on sheets of glass. This wet plate photography was less expensive than processing
possibility of taking a moment and saving it forever is spectacular. Photography has been invented by many different people and many cultures but the first one to succeed with a photograph was Nicéphore Niépce in the 1820’s. Even though it wasn't like the photography we know today and it took several days of light exposure and the picture wasnt very clear, it was still a photograph. He was the first one to have a successful picture even though many attempted such as Thomas Wedgwood. The difference between his picture and Nicéphore Niépce and Thomas was that Thomas used silver nitrate while Nicephore used silver chloride. The technology of a photograph was

Born of Irish immigrants in 1823 in a little place called Warren County, New York; Mathew Brady is known as “The Father of Photojournalism.” While a student of Samuel Morse and a friend of Louis Daguerre (inventor of the “Daguerreotype,” a method of photography that the image is developed straight onto a metal coated surface), in which he had met while under the study of Morse, Brady took up his interest in photography in the year of 1839, while only seventeen years of age. Brady took what he had learned from these two talented and intellectual men to America where he furthered his interest in the then-growing art of photography.
The internet is perhaps one of mankind’s greatest milestones. It connects people from all over the world, thus eradicating traditional boundaries of land and sea. Along with this connectivity comes the availability of information and instant communication. This sort of digitalization of human interaction is evident in social media websites like Facebook. People are able to communicate with each other and share aspects of their lives constantly. A popular form of self-expression present across all social media platforms is the ‘selfie’: an informal photograph of oneself taken by that person either with a front facing camera or other form of unprofessional photography. It has become such a phenomenon that it was named Oxford English Dictionary’s
The father of photography, real name Louis Daguerre, was born on November 18, 1787 in Cormeilles-en-Parisis, France. He grew up amongst a middle class family, although he did not receive a very consistent education due to political issues for the duration of the Revolution. One thing that Louis did show a genuine spark in, was drawing and painting. So much, that at thirteen years old, he shadowed an architect. However, his architectural career came to a close as Daguerre moved to Paris in 1804 and began involving himself in local theatre, opera, and church activities. By early 1820s, Daguerre had demonstrated unique creativity by working with a collaborator to assist him in the creation of an illusions theatre which he named a diorama. His
Journalist Anna Hart argues this is the new era of people sharing selfies on a daily basis, that society has reached into “the age vanity, the digital vanity, you can argue no generation is immune from the selfie craze” (Hart,2014). A selfie has a variety of audiences from children capturing their best look to The Pope, it’s the new way of capturing evidence of your interaction with different people, better than asking for an autograph. However, in Hart’s (2014) article she argues that the idea that there is a need to look a certain way all of the time, especially when you are posting a selfie on social media, it almost has to be perceived in a positive way, showing the best selfie. Hart (2014) said “I need to look healthy, glossy and polished
To whom do we owe the name of photograph You? In 1827 Joseph Nicephore Niepce invented the first photographic image with the camera Obscura along with the first permanent photograph captured of nature.
Created by Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, the Daguerreotype was the first successful and commercially available photographic format. The Daguerreotype was mostly used for
I believe that Generation Z has become obsessed with other people’s view of them and their opinions. Every moment of our day we do things to get approval from others whether it’s posting a picture on Instagram, creating a story on Snapchat, or posting something on Facebook. I’m not saying that I’m not a part of this obsession because I completely am, but I feel like we are starting to really go overboard. If you really think about it the whole idea of social media is bizarre. We post things to see how many likes we can get from people who we don’t really know, and who we would most likely never have a real conversation with. If you took social media and applied it to the olden days the best analogy I could think of would be like going to a
The oldest surviving photogravure taken by Niepce dates back to 1827. This photo, titled “View through a window in Gras” took over eight hours of exposure to create, and even then, the image that was created was blurry and monochrome. After Niepce’s death, his business partner, French painter Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre continued to work on improving image quality and reducing exposure time. Eventually, Daguerre discovered a method that involved exposing the metal plate to mercury fumes. This method became known as the “daguerreotype.” Over the next several decades photography continued to improve, bringing it closer and closer to the art and science we know today.
Third, social media doesn’t help for their studies or talents. People think social media is good places to show their talents or works what they did. For example, they argue people can share video clip what they playing the instruments or dancing or singing. It is, however, for people who already good to do those. If you are not good at those things and if you spend time to do social media, it would be hard to progress your talents. I did surveys about relationships between using social media and studying last semester. Most students answered using social media is not helpful to study. Also, students who got good grades spend just a little time to use social media. Using social media
In today’s society almost every individual has some type of social media, whether it is Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, or Twitter, People have accustomed to utilizing these types of social media and it has become part of their life and daily use. According to the essay “Students Addicted to Social Media” by the International Center for Media and Public Agenda, the study from the University of Maryland claims “American college students today are addicted to media” (Signs of Life in the USA 403). The university discovered that when these students are restricted from using media it is similar in terms of drug and alcohol addictions. During the study that the university conducted, students discuss how boring it is without media and how it gives them anxiety about not receiving information through social media. Other students claimed that texting and IM'ing gives them comfort and if they do not have these items then they feel alone and isolated from the world ( Signs of Life in the USA 404). Students are not the only ones who have an addiction of media but also parents and non-students. However, the International Center is accurate in some aspects and the responses students gave are very relatable which some people can agree with.
