The Dangerous Effects of Selfishness within The Grapes of Wrath and Raging Bull John Steinbeck and Martin Scorsese passionately created The Grapes of Wrath and Raging Bull regarding the art of selfishness in an attempt to recreate problems that society faces today. In today’s society, the word selfishness is a synonym of evil; the image it produces is of a fierce animal who tramples over others in order to achieve their goals, who cares for no one, and lives only to gratify their immediate needs. In some instances selfishness is well founded and it’s use could be justified, however, in The Grapes of Wrath and Raging Bull, that is not the case. Selfishness will most often result in someone being hurt; however The Grapes of Wrath shows how others selfishness can hurt those in need, while Raging Bull shows how the selfishness of a human could result in his despair. The Grapes of Wrath shows the reader how being self-centered blinds you to the struggles that others face and could lead them to ultimate failure. The novel follows the journey of the Tom Joad and his family for the majority of the story. As they travel south in the hope of a better life they experience obstacles that appear to stop them from achieving their goal. In The Grapes of Wrath the futility of the family’s success is brought on by others fighting against them; not economic and environmental issues like the reader would rightly assume. They consistently face selfish beings that are trying to get themselves ahead without thinking of the effect it could have on the poor family. All throughout the novel Steinbeck is showing the reader how humans incessantly steal from each other in order to get ahead.
