After graduating high school, I spent three months in Japan learning languages. There, I could engage with people from all the different backgrounds. Although it was a short period, only living in three months in Japan widened my perspectives. Semester at Sea will more open my perspectives also engaging in South Asia, Africa and Europe. I am going to major in Asian Studies, concentrating on East Asian languages, histories, and cultures. I believe that Semester at Sea will be a fascinating experience for me, who needs to be exposed to world’s diverse cultures. As I have experienced in Japan and Taiwan, I am sure that Semester at Sea will also enhance my dream to pursue Asian Studies. This will give me a taste of portions of different cultures
The reading that I chose for this assignment is from Chapter Six in the required book for class “The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History”. The chapter title is “The Sea Around Us” where the primary concentration of the chapter was the consequences that humans have on the planet with the focus on ocean acidification. This happens from the carbon dioxide we pump into the air and it slowly seeps back down into the oceans and slowly increases the PH level thus causing the ocean to be more acidic. In about one hundred years do you believe that, oysters, mussels, and coral reefs survive?
Studying abroad will be an experience of a lifetime. Going beyond the US Coastlines that I have never crossed will get be valuable life lessons that I must learn to be successful in my future career. I want to increase my knowledge both inside and outside of the classroom, and I believe the best way to do that for me is to continue to go beyond those small town borders that have kept me
I chose the Coast Guard for my military choice. The Coast Guard was established on August 4, 1790. The Coast Guard has a large difference compared to other military branches, the Coast Guard is directly related to Homeland Security, which means they also protect and look out for attacks and terrorism attempts against the country. There are many different careers inside the Coast Guard such as pilot, flight crew, medical staff, navel officers and many more. The career I would be most interested in would be a navel officer. Their main jobs are to control the rest of the crew on deck. The Coast Guard is in charge of the safety of the coast and the guarding all of the waters surrounding us. Anyone attempting to join Coast Guard must be able to
The film The Sea Inside shares the heart warming real life story of a man named Ramon Sampedro. At the young age of twenty-six he suffered an accident while diving into shallow waters of the ocean that left him a quadriplegic. Now at the age of fifty-four, Ramon must depend on his family to survive. His older brother Jose, Jose’s wife, Manuela and their son Javi do their best to take care of Ramon and make him feel loved. Although Ramon is extremely grateful to his family and friends for their help all these years, he has come to see his life as aggravating and unsatisfying. He wishes to die with the little dignity he has left in his life. However, Ramon’s family is dead set against the thought of assisted suicide and the
The guarantee of work, an excellent benefit that offers to employees and the quality of training program at the Seafarers Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship are the reasons why I want to be a Merchant Mariner. A Merchant Mariner career provide an established job and the outstanding of income to the seamen moreover, it also offers a great benefit to cover their family. With the prospect of jobs demand a merchant mariner has opportunities for growth in the marine jobs and it has high level demand to serve the maritime shipping industry, particularly in the private sector like a cruise ship and cargo industry that operate around the world. These private sector depend on the Merchant Mariners to perform preventative maintenance on equipment and delivery cargo on time. Base on the world consumer and the US economy depend on cargo ship and Cruise ships to support gross domestic product.
If you have ever lived in proximity to coastal areas you may have seen coastline erosion first hand. The beaches you frequent during the summer may seem to be getting smaller and smaller every year. Why does your favorite beach seem to be disappearing? Coastal erosion is to blame. The waves, wind, tides and currents all play a part in the mechanism that is coastal erosion. When water and wind batter the shoreline sediments are carried out to sea and deposited on the sea floor or at other points along the coastline. This is called an erosional coastline. This erosion may be very apparent or seem to have happened overnight when it happens due to a large storm or extremely high tide.
Among my international experiences, I especially value the two-month study abroad in Spain. I chose to go there because of my interest in Spanish language and culture that was originally developed through a four-week Spanish beginner workshop during the summer break prior to my study abroad trip. In Spain, I lived mainly in Salamanca, a small old city in northwestern Spain, which was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thanks to my parents, who had the confidence and trust to let me go
President Obama established a national marine memorial off the coast of New England. The new memorial, which is about the size of Connecticut, houses geological and ecological treasures. Under the surface of this protected ocean rest canyons and extinct volcanoes. Rare fish, coral, whales, and turtles count themselves among the animals that live in the memorial. Critics cite the possible harm the memorial will cause to the fishing industry.
The study abroad program that I am most interested in would have to be the Semester at Sea. The program is offered in the Fall and Spring. The ship travels to over twelve countries where students are able to gain hands on field experience, and meaningful engagement in the global community. (semesteratsea.org) “Our program exposes students to cultures that most students have only read about in books. Exposure to new cultures and people of the world will give new perspectives.” (semesteratsea.org) “While in each country you will have the opportunity to participate in field labs, field programs and other actives that will help push your understanding of the world into new directions.” I am looking forward to tacking advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity to travel the world. I plan to participate in this program the summer of my junior year here at Bowling Green. I highly suggest Bowling Green to any student looking at colleges because of their; excellent academic programs, social opportunities, and Study Abroad
What is life after high school? Have you thought about what you want to do, whether it’s college, work, or military? Well if you have thought about the military route, so have I. The Coast Guard has many reasons as to why it could be the best branch of military for the future. There are many reasons to join the Coast Guard, but the three best reasons are to help protect the marine ecosystems, go to college for free, and travel around the world.
Media is an essential part of my life. It informs me, influences me, and inspires me. Media provides entertainment, creativity, and knowledge. My experience with media has been very positive. It’s very rare that media doesn’t have a say in my decisions, anywhere from what brand to get or what I’m going to eat next. The way that media has changed my life the most however, is through Shark Week. Shark Week is a weeklong event where once a year the Discovery Channel only plays shows about the newest, biggest, most unusual sharks found.
Thanks to my upbringing in Hawaii and growing up in an international missionary community, I have expanded my worldview. I have interact with the travelers and the missionaries from every country of the world. I have listened to the stories of the bombing of Pearl Harbor from a Hawaiian, American, and a Japanese. I have been molded in a priceless learning environment that teaches me new things every day.
When the corporation “Sea World” is mentioned in a sentence the first thing that comes
The Ross Sea is one of the most productive regions of the Southern Ocean, accounting for 25–30% of annual Southern Ocean primary production (Moore and Abbott 2000, Arrigo et al. 1998a, Arrigo et al. 2008). Because this region is covered by sea ice for much of the year, the bulk of annual production is restricted to austral spring and to summer blooms of phytoplankton that develop at the marginal ice zone (MIZ) and within polynyas (open water surrounded by ice) along the Victoria
In the book Star of the Sea, written by author Joseph O’Connor, he states “They had far more in common than either realised. One was born Catholic, the other Protestant. One was born Irish, the other British. But neither was the greatest difference between them. One was born rich and the other poor.” O’Connor summarises the idea of social class that has been a recurring idea since the dawn of time. Social classes is basically the division of society that is based on social and economic status. The people who were at the top of the social classes were thought to be the prestigious and most worthy people and the further you go down the chain the more common people you began to see. Many people demonstrate the social class system in literature. Shakespeare, especially, offers a challenge to what everyone thought they knew of the social class system.
