In the United States alone, there are between twenty-five and fifty serial killers active at any given time. What is a serial killer? A serial killer is defined as the same offender killing three or more people during separate events with a cooling off period (Anderson, 1999). There have been several famous serial killers throughout the years like Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer. There have been several studies on serial killers and what makes them different from the ordinary killer. Serial killers have many different characteristics and motives behind their killings (Anderson, 1999). Most serial killers are white men. They may also have an above average IQ although they may perform poorly in school and usually hold jobs as unskilled laborers. Most serial killers also come from broken or troubled homes (Schechter, 2004). There may also be a history of mental illness or alcohol or drug abuse in the family. Most serial killers also experience some type of abuse in their childhood and because of that abuse hold resentment towards the parental figure that perpetrated the abuse(Schechter, 2004). Serial killers often present with psychiatric problems at an early age and may have even been institutionalized. Some serial killers because of their social isolation may have been suicidal as teenagers. It is difficult to determine the exact number of victims of a serial killer for various reasons, but studies show the estimated number of victims per serial killer range anywhere from three to thirteen. The average length of a serial killers career is estimated between four and five years (Arndt, Hietpas, & Kim, 2004). According to the trauma control model at the end of a serial killers career, there is often an increase of killings as well as an increase of sloppiness. There is also usually a shorten length of time between each killing. While most serial killers are loners sometimes they have partners or teams. In these cases, one partner or team member will be the dominant party and sometimes the partner is a female (Arndt, Hietpas, & Kim, 2004). Serial killers can also be stable or transient. A stable serial killer will kill inside their comfort zone, for example, killing in the same area or same city over and over again. Transient serial killers on the other hand, often travel through several states killing throughout their career. There are also several different ways serial killers kill.
