In recent discussions of human trafficking, a controversial issue has been that slavery has been abolished in 1865 but is there such thing as modern slavery? On one hand, some argue that the 13th amendment has not abolished slavery and stains the lives of the victims. On the other hand, however, others argue that the business of slavery produces billions of dollars per year. In summary, the issues is whether modern slavery should be put to a stop. While some believe that traffickers manipulating a victim’s mind making him or her think that working for them is going to make their life easier, the traffickers are violating the 13th amendment and should be punished for such behavior.
Many people around the United States believe that slavery ended

Domestic servitude is known as people working as maids, servants, house keepers and those that care for the elderly and the ill. These type of people usually live in a workplace that is informal or in living quarters. They usually don’t share with other workers. During Domestic Servitude slavery is not just in towns, cities, or states. Some of the products that we see in our daily lives are made by slaves. Amanda Kloer states “Human trafficking isn’t just in your town, it’s in your home… victims are forced to make many products we use every day according to productsofslavery.org.” (Kloer 1). Most people in our country do not realize that products that they have worn, touched or seen has been made by a slave. Normal products, such as rice, chocolate, fish or coffee have been made by trafficking victims. Jewelry, athletic shoes, or cotton might have been made by slaves. Rugs, fresh flowers a cell phone or either consumer goods, there is a possibility that slavery is in our every day …show more content…
Sex trafficking is when a person is being forced or deceived into prostitution. Commercial sexual exploitation includes pornography, prostitution and sex trafficking of women and girls. Sex traffickers use violence, debt, lies and many other forms to manipulate women, children and men. Some of the ways of engaging these victims is lying to them with high paid jobs or promising romantic relationships. Women that involved in commercial sex have sex with 6 to 10 men a day, 7 days a week. All of those involved in recruiting, transporting receiving or obtaining the person has been a committed into a trafficking crime. Many of these young girls and women are often held against their will. They get put into prostitution to pay back the people who provided them with the job. Some of the victims are often found in the streets working in establishments that offer commercial sex. For example strip clubs, pornography houses, adult bookstores, modeling studios, and
Sex trafficking is a problem that is happening and occurring all over the world. Many families and individuals suffer due to sex trafficking. Many people are not even aware of what it really is. Sex trafficking is when young girls, as young as five or six, get kidnapped and are used for the sexual pleasure of others with a profit, or are sold as sex slaves to other people. The official definition is, “Human sex trafficking is a form of slavery and involuntary servitude resulting in grave human rights violations. Sex trafficking involves individuals profiting from the sexual exploitation of others and has severe physical and psychological consequences for its victims.” (The
Over the last several years, the issue of human trafficking has been compared with the slave trade. This is because both are focused on taking someone against their will and forcing them to engage in demeaning activities. Yet, the practices of modern traffickers are different from slave traders. To fully understand the similarities and disparities requires contrasting them with one another. The combination of these factors will provide specific insights about the two. (Bales, 2010)
In 1865 the United States passed the thirteenth amendment of the constitution which formally abolished the practice of slavery in the United States. Over a century has went by since this day, and yet somewhere behind the mask of freedom that our country holds with such pride lingers a hidden trade. This is the trade of modern day slavery that remains prevalent in our country. Despite the freedoms we are granted as a citizen of the United States,- human trafficking is an enormous issue that is often overlooked. In fact very little light is shown on this topic, but the awful reality is there. Every day women, children, and even men are kidnapped, taken from their families, and forced into free labor and sexual exploitation.
Although slavery was abolished in 1865, the practice of it is still very alive today. Human trafficking, a form of modern slavery, is the buying and selling of people, whether it 's for forced labor or commercial sex. Every year, thousands of adults and children, especially girls, are forced into the endless trafficking ring. “The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally” (“The Facts”). The human trafficking industry is a worldwide network that is worth an estimated 150 billion dollars (“The Facts”). Millions of stories about victims experiences can be found and read. Many of these victims are sucked into the world of human trafficking because they are immigrants trying to escape to the U.S. and have debts to pay off once they get there. Trafficking happens everywhere, from big city shopping centers, to small town massage parlors. People are being captured, sold and transported across the world via various forms of transportation at all times. With updated technology, it becomes easier and easier to buy and sell these “slaves” and with this, the chances of being caught and punished is almost nothing. Many people think slavery is dead; however, human trafficking is still alive and it needs to be stopped because many people are being forced into involuntary sex and labor.
Russian serfs, or peasants who were legally bound to remain on their land, had a huge impact on Russia’s economy, politics, and on the world that we know today. “Serfdom became, more than it had ever before been, the basis of the entire social order.” (Blum, 3-12) American slaves, who were legally owned by whomever bought them, were greatly similar to those of serfs and also had a huge impact on the world today. Some people think that slaves and serfs are the same, but on the contrary, they are not the same, due to environmental factors, historical events, economic circumstances, etc… Because slaves and serfs worked the land, and most of Russia and America were primarily agricultural, laborers were essential to the basic order of the country
Two definitions that are important to the topic of sex trafficking are what sex trafficking is and what a commercial sex act is. Sex trafficking is defined as when someone uses force, fraud or coercion to cause a commercial sex act with an adult or causes a minor to commit a commercial sex act. A commercial sex act is defined as prostitution, pornography and sexual performance done in exchange for any item of value, such as money, drugs, shelter, food or clothes (Shared Hope International, 2016). Sex trafficking is considered a form of modern slavery. Under federal law, anyone under the age of eighteen that is persuaded into a commercial sex act is considered a victim of sex trafficking, whether it was forced or not (Polaris Project, 2016). There are three
Imagine being a girl forced or sold into sex slavery. Imagine having everything taken including your dignity. Imagine being forced to have sexual relationships with different people over and over agin all day or night long. Sex trafficking is one of the fastest growing criminal enterprises in the world. It occurs when one person is forcing another person to commit a commercial sex act, which is any type of prostitution or sexual act done in exchange for money.
Many people think slavery in the USA is over, ever since the passage of the 13th amendment freed the African slaves brought into this country against their will. But, in fact, human trafficking, or bringing people into the country for the sole purpose of exploitation is still happening today.
According to sharedhope.org, sexual trafficking is defined as when “someone uses force, fraud or coercion to cause a commercial sex act with an adult or causes a minor to commit a commercial sex act [such as] prostitution, pornography and an exchanged sexual performance.”
A commercial sex act includes prostitution, pornography, and sexual performance done in exchange for an item of value, such as money, drugs, shelter, food, or clothes. Many factors contribute to making a sex trafficking business work. Sex trafficking can happen at anytime and at any location. Sex trafficking can happen to anyone of any gender and of any race. Women and young females are the majority of sex trafficking in the United States of America. For example, if a person is crossing the boarder to the United States, they are at risk more, and they can be captured and sold into trafficking. About 17,000 individuals are brought into the United States and held against their will as victims of human trafficking, as stated on www.humantrafficking.com
But it’s worth underscoring that each slave had an average four square feet of space. That is four square feet. As one eyewitness testified before Parliament in 1791, “They had not so much room as a man in his coffin.” Once in the Americas, the surviving slaves were sold in a market very similar to the way cattle would be sold. After purchase, slave owners would often brand their new possession on the cheeks, again just as they would do with cattle. The lives of slaves were dominated by work and terror, but mostly work. Slaves did all types of work, from housework to skilled crafts work, and some even worked as sailors, but the majority of them worked as agricultural laborers. In the Caribbean and Brazil, most of them planted, harvested and processed sugar, working ten months out of the year, dawn until dusk. The worst part of this job, which was saying something because there were many bad parts, was fertilizing the sugar cane. This required slaves to carry 80 pound baskets of manure on their heads up and down hill. When it came time to harvest and process the cane, speed was incredibly important because once cut, sugar sap can go sour within a day. This meant that slaves would often work 48 hours straight during harvest time, working without sleep in the sweltering sugar press houses where the cane would be crushed in hand rollers and then boiled. Slaves often caught their hands in the rollers, and their overseers kept a
The word “Freedom” is a right that most humans take for granted each day. Unfortunately, throughout the world, not everyone has this beloved privilege. Millions of unlucky men, women, and children are being executed or forced into what is known as a modern day slavery. The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally, with hundreds of thousands in the United States. For thousands of years, humans have been forced into numerous forms of sexual and physical slavery. Human Trafficking has been a recurring issue throughout history because of its lack of awareness, economical burden on people, and financial gain for smugglers.
Sex trafficking is a form of modern slavery that exists throughout the United States and globally. Sex traffickers use violence, threats, lies, debt bondage, and other forms of coercion to compel adults and children to engage in commercial sex acts against their will. Under U.S. federal law, any minor under the age of 18 years induced into commercial sex is a victim of sex trafficking. The situations that sex trafficking victims face vary. Many victims become romantically involved with someone who then forces or manipulates them into prostitution. Others are taken in with false promises of a job, such as modeling or dancing. Some are forced to sell sex by their parents or other family members. They may be involved in a trafficking situation
Sex trafficking has become and continues to grow as an industry. Sex trafficking is when someone uses force, fraud, or coercion to force a person to commit a commercial sex act. A commercial sex act includes prostitution, pornography and sexual performance done in exchange for any item of value such as money, drugs, shelter, food, or clothes. It’s able to grow because there’s a high demand. The buyer fuels the market with their money, then the trafficker/ pimp exploits victims to gain profit from the buyers, lastly the victim consists of girls and boys who are bought and sold for profit. Traffickers find victims through social network, home neighborhoods, clubs or bars, and school. Then lure them through protections, love, adventure, home, and opportunity. To ensure compliance and meet demands they use fear, violence, intimidation, and threats. The sex trade industry has to be terminated; the use of humans for profit is inhuman and remorseless. Sex trafficking generally involves the forced prostitution of women, sometimes it falls on men as well, often children. Many times the abuser uses mind games to force the victim to have sex with them; some of those being promising marriage and a family if they do as they are told. Another thing that the traffickers tend to do is off the victim or the victim's family accommodations or services in return for prostitution. Jennifer Mandel stated, “Uneducated, marginalized, and discriminated against, these women may be lured by traffickers promising employment opportunities abroad (Mandel, 2012-2013).” This states that the traffickers do not only get lured in by promises of accommodations, but of other employment opportunities.
