John Wooden has inspired me to become a leader. After becoming aware of Wooden's "Seven Point Creed", I began to go deeper I what each point specifically means. I reflect on this creed almost every day; number two of the creed is big; one I relate to as should everyone: Help Others. In relation to the golden rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”; we can’t live a perfect day without helping others without getting something else in return.
I recall in my Theory of Knowledge class when a classmate lied to my teacher. I immediately reflected to John Wooden and number one of the creed, Be True to Yourself. In this case I thought, you can fool anyone, but you should never fool yourself. As soon as you fool yourself, you are done.
A professional deception detector, and author, Pamela Meyer points out the fact that, “ Lying is complex. It 's woven into the fabric of our daily and our business lives. We 're deeply ambivalent about the truth…. It 's as old as breathing. It 's part of our culture, it 's part of our history. Think Dante, Shakespeare, the Bible, News of the World”, in a TED Talk in which she details certain clues about how to
Lying is a common habit that everyone has had experiences with. I have lied and have been lied to numerous times. Everyone has. However, not everyone exposed to a certain lie is aware of it’s true power. In her essay “The Ways We Lie”, Stephanie Ericsson criticizes our bad habit of lying. She explains many different types of lies and even gives examples to show how harmful they can be as “our acceptance of lies becomes a cultural cancer that eventually shrouds and reorders reality until moral garbage becomes invisible to us as water is to a fish” (128).
Have you ever wondered why it can be so hard to tell the truth, or why it seems better to tell a lie? In both F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Rob Marshall’s Chicago, characters lie because they feel that it is easier. However, lying leads to a downward- spiral. The society we live in can either lead us to a complicated relationship with the truth or easy going. The problem with constantly telling lies is that it starts off with one then leads to another until everything you say is a lie. People know it is easier to tell lies than face the truth because they are either doing it for money, or protection for themselves, people they love, or relationships. Yes, telling lies can help but imagine the damage you’re building up on the way. Nobody likes liars and liars can be found anywhere, even families lie to each other. Relationships are just like thin pieces of paper that make small tears to it every time a lie is told. The paper can be put back together but it will never be the same or be seen the same.
The Ways We Lie addresses the main topic of avoiding the truth promptly. Factions of lying, especially those not ordinarily considered deceit, are presented, and personal anecdotes as well as historical precedents magnify personal appeal along with logic. The purpose of this essay is to encourage people to abstain from dishonesty. For illustration, the author states,”I cannot seem to escape the voice deep inside
Coach Wooden is a known servant leader, thanks to one of his mentors in life, Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa taught him that not only to serve his players as a coach, but also to serve them as a mentor with emphasis on respect and love. For example every year Coach Wooden takes thirty minutes out of the first practice to teach the freshman the proper way to put on their sneakers. They are college players and should be able to properly put on shoes, yet John shows them to insure the prevention of blisters and sprained ankles. When asked why he cares so much he replied, “That's your first lesson. You see, if there are wrinkles in your socks or your shoes aren't tied properly, you will develop blisters. With blisters, you'll miss practice. If you miss practice, you don't play. And if you don't play, we cannot win. If you want to win Championships, you must take care of the smallest of details" (Meier, J. 2015). John Wooden also was a servant leader for most of his life by how he acted. He served others as an example of how to be a hard working, genuine, inspirational leader. John wooden did this because he was taught from the sincerest of all servant leaders, mother Teresa, that “A life not lived for others, is not a life” (Meier, J. 2015).
Lying can change a person’s view but is not a right way to do every
Benjamin Franklin’s book, Poor Richard’s Almanac, is full of advice. One of those quotes was “A lie stands on one leg, truth on two.”. This is a very wise saying and offers the reader excellent advice about lying.
People that are deceiving don’t tend to have good results. In the novel The Memory Keeper’s Daughter written by Kim Edwards, David Henry shows in the beginning of the story that he could be deceiving by hiding a secret from his wife. David Henry is deceiving as he tells the biggest lie about his new-born child to his wife throughout the story. The husband keeps his twin daughter a secret as soon as he finds out that there was a chance that she would have a heart defect. There was no way he would tell his wife about this daughter so he decides to act as if the child doesn’t even exist.
From the very beginning of our childhood, we have been taught by our parents never to lie. They always told us that lying is never good and the outcome of a lie is worse than the lie itself. But what if parents have been wrong? What if the outcome of a lie could be positive? Selfless lies that have good intentions and are used to benefit the greater good are referred to as “good lies”.
John O'Leary stressed the importance of three questions: Why me? Who cares? What more can I do? From the introduction, these were posed through a negative mindset, but as he continued, he gave their meaning a new light. People face hardships each day, some more horrific than others. As for Mr. O'Leary, one childish mistake changed his life forever. Learning how he overcame the obstacle of healing from burns that covered one-hundred percent of his body exposed how hope, love, and faith can reignite the passion for life. We can easily choose to give up, but what a waste that is to allow yourself to fall away. Each individual has the opportunity to make an extraordinary impact on the world, so instead of bowing down to the troubles, one can fight and prove their worthiness. In order to blossom as a servant leader, it is important to realize you need to hold on to courage and passion, so that your efforts can have their full potential.
When has lying to someone ever been beneficial? In the Novel “the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark twain shows how sometimes people tend to lie to their close ones to avoid trouble or even to not get themselves in trouble. In the story shows how Huck faces some obstacles and faces with them by lying to avoid it. As a very known quote that says “what comes around goes around”. It means that no matter how good or bad things tend to be, it will always come back the same way it's faced in the beginning. Huck struggled to remain honest and as of lying, he got what he deserves.
There are many things that make a person a good leader but when narrowed down, Wooden describes some of his steps that he uses. This paper will discuss three of the steps that Wooden uses to be an effective leader. As well as my understanding of the steps and what I got out of them. It will also talk about how I can relate to this steps and examples on how I can use them in order to become a more successful leader.
“Perhaps I will be a great man...I mean perhaps I will hold on to the substance of the truth and find my way always with the right course.” (Hansberry) Some see the truth and lies as exits on a highway ; they can choose to go right and accept the truth or they can choose the left and continue to impair their character. Although, there is no right or wrong choice, the truth can assist people in realize all the wrong in their life, which will help them better themselves and go down a different road. “Truth is like the sun. You can always shut it out, but it aint goin’ away” was said by Elvis Presley. Those who choose to run and hide from the truth no longer have the decision to let it improve them and gain from it. They have chosen to lie to others or themselves, they want to make it go away, after all they don't understand that it will always be there. So let the truth in so you can recover from it and recover from the wounds that may have been reopened by the killer we call the
The topic of leadership continues to attract several theoretical arguments as the practice of leadership varies depending on a variety of factors (Loveridge, 2014). However, the contributions made by John Wooden in transforming leadership are impeccable, with his many years as a basketball coach earning him admiration and success in equal measure. John Wooden, therefore, explains how leaders can get the maximum potential out of their followers through enhancing the individual abilities and shaping the personal efforts in a manner that guarantees personal peak performances and subsequent improvement of team or organizational performance.
Knapp, et all, Lying, 54 The idea of concept of lying, deception and truth as a grey area was introduced and throughout the interview Professor Hedrick stuck to her stance of truth depending on the person in question. Our journey through life has heavily influenced the ever-changing stance over truth. Knapp, et all, Lying, 57 Throughout the interview she spoke about her seeing changes in the students, in their ideas, how they evolve in just a semester. Ethics to her is like a scale, it needs to be constantly adjusted, adapted and balanced. Much like her students writing styles, she sees their speech, their viewpoints over the world change drastically in just a semester, some students regress and others thrive. Their interpretations open up and they come up to her with what they thought but she is no stranger to the lies students tell. In her long career, she has had many outlandish lies told to her, what students will do to get out of trouble or an extension on an exam or extra credit. The idea of lying to an authority figure that could end in severe consequences is a lie that many students would not think of before but when they enter the college scene, they change; some students would do anything to get a little extra credit. It’s part of her job to be vigilant for the possible lies students may tell in an attempt to take advantage of her. This
