Abstract
There are many things that make a person a good leader but when narrowed down, Wooden describes some of his steps that he uses. This paper will discuss three of the steps that Wooden uses to be an effective leader. As well as my understanding of the steps and what I got out of them. It will also talk about how I can relate to this steps and examples on how I can use them in order to become a more successful leader.
John Wooden too many is known as a successful basketball coach. He coached for Kentucky High School, South Bend Central High School, Indiana State Teachers College, and his most successful one, UCLA. He was known for teaching good habits to his players and that is what he used to be successful in his games and be an effective leader. In his book “Wooden on Leadership: How to Create a Winning Organization” he talks about how exactly he developed the steps to being successful. He gives us some of his experiences that he had and how it has hurt him or helped him and then explains to us how we can use it to be ourselves. It is from this that I learned that to be a successful leader, I should follow his steps. The ones that caught my attention where Good Values Attract Good People, Emotion Is Your Enemy, and Seek Significant Change. With these steps I realized that there was so much I could do to be a better leader.
Good Values Attract Good People Before reading
I chose this book by John Wooden in hopes to better my efforts in terms of everyday leadership in any environment I’m put in. I feel as if I am a leader myself already as I’ve had experience in terms of playing on multiple competitive softball, baseball and ice hockey teams. I’ve also seen my leadership abilities prove themselves in every work condition I’ve been a part of and every job. I work diligently and effortlessly and hope to lead by example. I chose this book to better improve these skills I already posses and help myself become more knowledgeable on the subject.
He is a dedicated and passionate leader. Under his leadership, his UCLA team had won ten NCAA championships. Some of the qualities that Wooden possessed which made him become an effective leader were always making sure his player’s emotions were on an even keel, pretending that he didn’t care about winning, and making sure his players were always in top condition. John Wooden was always a very harsh and strict coach, making
This approach emphasize that having a leader with a certain set of traits is crucial to having effective leadership. It’s the leader and the leader’s personality that are central to the leadership process.
This paper will discuss the topic of Leadership and both explore, as well as explain, it’s applicability in today’s work environment. The basis for discussion will be centered on the material provided during instruction of Management 371 and the personal LSA Journal entries of John Brennan. Additionally, there are three referenced articles that further explain and highlight the topic of Leadership. Throughout this paper, Leadership and the traits that make up a great leader will be explained.
A leader is a person who has the ability to lead or command an entire group of people, a leader is someone who is followed by other people. Being a leader is a wonderful privilege, it is something that is not necessarily handed to an individual nor is it something that can be bought, leadership is something that is earned. This entire course we have been learning about and discussing various characteristics of effective leaders. Some of those characteristics included confidence, charisma, courage, heart, perseverance, and among many others. This paper will focus primarily on one individual who exemplifies these traits and many other characteristics which contributes greatly to his success as a leader. The person that has been selected
The topic of leadership continues to attract several theoretical arguments as the practice of leadership varies depending on a variety of factors (Loveridge, 2014). However, the contributions made by John Wooden in transforming leadership are impeccable, with his many years as a basketball coach earning him admiration and success in equal measure. John Wooden, therefore, explains how leaders can get the maximum potential out of their followers through enhancing the individual abilities and shaping the personal efforts in a manner that guarantees personal peak performances and subsequent improvement of team or organizational performance.
Leadership is a very broad topic; I never knew just how many different traits and skills that it takes to become an effective leader. Some of which I was familiar with, and others that I was not aware of, but now from taking this course, they all seem to be necessary for the role of leadership. The attached paper, will explain of some of the important theories and concepts that I thought were most important to be able to become and effective leader.
Holistically, in order to determine what makes an individual an effective leader or a misleader, one must first understand the aspects of leadership. While it is impossible to condense what makes a leader into a short list of qualities and ideas, for the intent of this paper, the comparative aspects of leadership will be limited to: character, skills/talent, and results.
John Wooden is a man that knows what success is. Three of the most important traits from Wooden’s pyramid are competitive greatness, confidence, and enthusiasm. Competitive greatness is being
Abstract: There are numerous definitions of leadership, all of which contain elements related to people (the leader and the follower(s)), communicating in person or by the written word, actions (organizing, directing, coaching, and/or motivating), and for a purpose (meeting a goal(s) or accomplishing a task(s)) (ADP 6-22) (Fisher 2015) (Bolden 2013) (Hogan 2005). Additionally, everything done occurs within a given context. Effective leaders are poised, proficient, pertinent, and practical in the application of the art of leadership. This means leaders are ready to engage the group with effective methods and
In Leadership 101 by John Maxwell, the author uses practical application points to give guidance on what it takes to be good leader. The book is divided in three parts, linking the development, traits and impacts of a leader, with a series of questions that the author answers. The author also uses these examples and a detailed framework to help the readers enhance the leadership abilities they already possess. Leadership is, and always has been, a vital aspect of social and economic constructs. It is essential to the survival of societies, industries, organizations, and virtually any group of individuals that come together for a common purpose. However, leadership is difficult to define in a single, definitive sense. As such, theories of leadership, what constitutes a great leader, and how leaders are made have evolved constantly throughout history, and still continue to change today in hopes of improving upon our understanding of leadership, its importance, and how it can be most effective in modern organizational cultures.
Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal. The article “Leadership That Gets Results” by Daniel Goleman is an article that helps readers understand that there is not only one way of becoming a successful leader. Research indicates that leaders with best results do not rely on only one leadership style. Goleman, describes leaderships styles as array of clubs in a golf pro’s bag. Over the course of the game, the pro picks clubs based on the demands of the shot. Thinking is involved during the selection, but usually it is automatic. The pro is aware of the challenge ahead, quickly utilizes the right tool, and puts it to work. It has also been found that emotional intelligence
"Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it." Dwight D. Eisenhower This quote from Eisenhower rings true on many levels. During my career in the military and the private sector, I have been subjected to many different styles of leadership, good or bad. In my leadership roles I have attained, I tried to model leadership abilities by taking bits and pieces of previous leader’s styles and forming them into my own model. This has proven to work well as dealing with people from all different walks of life there is no one size fits all approach. In writing this paper, I will detail my own leadership platform drawing from the course material and various other sources. The goal of this paper is to show a solid understanding of the course teachings and perhaps give the reader a new found perspective on leadership.
The purpose of this paper is to reflect and make an analysis of the general strengths and weaknesses of a leader, provide recommendations, thoughts of overall performance to improve on this person’s leadership style in which practices and theories were utilized most effectively. Upon such, draw conclusions and provide an integration of this leadership practice into my own leadership practice. The accomplishment of this will be achieved by identifying several key practices from published documents surrounding and encompassing the leader, and comparing them to known relative concepts for a holistic view of the approach.
