The people live in a community that is severely more controlled than ours. We have the freedom to have a pet, have as many kids as you want, and say what you want. To me a utopia cannot be achieved, a utopia would be “perfect world” where everyone is satisfied. A dystopia can be very far from perfect, as it is in The Giver. The world in The Giver by Lois Lowry is a dystopia because no world anywhere can ever be perfect, the people who live there will never be truly happy and because without choice life can be very boring, as it is in The Giver.

Jonas’ community appears to be a utopia, but, in reality, it is a dystopia. The people seem perfectly content to live in an isolated wreck—in a government run by a select few—in which a group of Elders enforces the rules. In Jonas’ community, there is no poverty, starvation, unemployment, lack of housing, or discrimination; everything is perfectly planned to eliminate any problems. However, as the book progresses and Jonas gains insight into what the people have willingly given up—their freedoms and individualities—for the so-called common good of the community, it becomes more and more obvious that the community is a horrible place in which to live. The result is, as praised by Jonas’ family unit, that the decisions the Elders make are never incorrect or unsuitable. They seem omniscient, and this strengthens their claim to power, their right to make decisions for the whole community as they are excellent at it. As has been shown above, the novel contains various forms of oppression. In order for “people” to express their individuality and humanity, freedom of choice is essential. Dehumanization is observed in The Giver’s society, and life within the communities becomes deformed, manipulated, and far from being a utopia. Infact, due to all the dehumanization, fear, surveillance and inequality shown in this society, it now strongly resembles dystopian one.

The dystopian novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry is about a boy called Jonas becoming the new Receiver-of-Memories. Throughout the novel, the protagonist, Jonas matures as knowledge is gained, and begins to understand the deepest, and darkest secrets of the community he lives in that is seemly 'perfect'. The author has successfully analysed a variety of social issues present in today's modern world in the novel. Some issues implied are: lack of individuality which allows for easy control, the abandonment of emotions and the importance of memories.

Most Americans associate hospitals to be the standard place where women can give birth. However, women did not always deliver in hospitals. Gynecology, the medical practice dealing with the female reproductive system, did not emerge until the early nineteenth century. Before doctors came along, women used to hire midwives to deliver babies in the comfort of their own homes. In this paper I will examine the social, political, and scientific implications of how giving birth has transitioned from being a midwife’s job into that of a doctor’s. Furthermore, I will attempt to show how these implications intersect together to make birth a feminist issue. To support my argument, I will be referencing Tina Cassidy’s “The Dawn of the Doctors,” Abby Epstein’s documentary film The Business of Being Born, and Eesha Pandit’s article “America’s secret history of forced sterilization: Remembering a disturbing and not-so-distant past.” I argue that the processes surrounding birth are intersectional feminist issues because they are often manipulated by male figures pursuing money and authority, which ultimately compromises women’s health and power of choice.

Imagine living in a world with no individuality. Everyone would be limited to a degree of “sameness”. As a result, humans would lack the ability to love, to feel emotions, and to imagine. The world would essentially be filled with one shared mind; there would be no opinions, no choices, and no awareness that your mind was even being constrained what so ever. The theme conveyed through the Giver is that individuality should be valued. The story takes place in a utopian society where everything is the same. There are no choices, no color, and no love in the Community of Sameness. The novel starts out a month before the Ceremony of Twelve, where the 12 year olds each get assigned a job. Jonas gets the assignment of the Receiver of Memory, and he soon finds out that lying is permitted, and receives several memories of the past without sameness, with pain too. He has the ability to see beyond, and finds out that he and the Giver are the only people in the Community that have the ability to see, as well as hear beyond. The Giver is written from Jonas’s confusion, excitement, glory, and discoveries. Jonas is a twelve-year-old boy living in a futuristic civilization that has eliminated all pain, fear, love, and free will. There is no chauvinism, since everyone looks and acts basically the same, and there are no “important” choices to be made, also, everyone is consistently polite. The “perfect” society Jonas lives in has also abolished choice: At age twelve every member of the community is assigned a job based on his or her abilities and interests. Citizens can apply for compatible spouses, who are assigned to them based on interests and jobs and each couple is allowed to receive exactly two children each. (Notice that I said receive, not give birth to.) In addition to that, spouses don’t show any signs of love or affection, just the word love, even when pointed at their children, makes them burst in laughter and explanations! Citizens who break rules or fail to adapt properly to the society’s codes of behavior are “released”. Everything is planned and organized so that life is as convenient and pleasant as possible, or so they think.

Conformity, most people do not like it and most people do. There would be a time where you would want to be the same as someone is probably if you and your best friend wear the same exact outfit and you two might say, “Twinsies”. Do you ever wonder what it would be like if everyone dressed the same as you and not just one person? In a dystopian novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, everyone is forced to live the same way. Everything in the Community is the same. For instance, their clothing, skin tones, the size of their family, house, everything is identical. That is just how their community works. If everyone in the world lived the same like The Giver, society would not have originality and diversity. Just imagine living in that world instead of your world here where everyone is different.

In the novel, Brave New World, there is no such thing as a family, mother, or father inside the World State. The society has made everyone in the World State believe that having a natural birth is disgusting, and unacceptable.
