Sometimes, the traffickers do not go looking for the girls, the girls are brought to them. In many cases, especially those of people who live in poverty, it's not rare for girls to be sold to traffickers. A quote from the article, Sex Trafficking of Women and Girls mentions this briefly; “many women are sold into the sex trade by parents, husbands, and significant others…”(Deshpande and Nour, 2013, Sex Trafficking of Women and Girls). At times, these families are tricked into believing that the traffickers will provide handsomely for their daughters and give her a better life than they could ever be able to offer her. In places like Thailand, selling daughters has been a common practice for eons; “for hundreds of years, many people in the north, struggling for life have been forced to view their own children as commodities. A failed harvest, the death of a key breadwinner, or any serious debt..might lead to the sale of a daughter (never a son) as a slave or servant”(Ehrenreich & Hochschild, 2002, p.210). Some parents feel what money they can get from their daughters is desirable because of what that money can buy; “a recent survey in the northern provinces found that if the families who sold their daughters, two thirds could afford not to do so but ‘instead preferred to buy color televisions and video equipment”(Ehrenreich & Hochschild, 2002, p.210). Selling their daughters was done as a pure necessary measure in their opinion, as they felt they could not make the same
Sex trafficking, particularly that of children, has become a growing concern in the United States over the past several decades (Kotrla, 2010). By definition, child sex trafficking is “when a child (under 18 years of age) is induced to perform a commercial sex act” (U.S., 2013, para. 4), and includes forms such as prostitution and pornography (Kotrla, 2010). Researchers suggest that children are the most vulnerable to becoming victims of prostitution (Kotrla), and it is estimated that there are at least 100,000 victims in the United States (Estes & Weiner, 2001). Sex traffickers, otherwise known as “pimps,” often lure children with promises of food, clothing, love, and shelter, and then the pimps manipulate the children to keep them in prostitution (U.S. Department of Justice [DOJ], 2015). Awareness of the issue has led to the development of organizations, such as Children of the Night, that seek to help victims escape the sex trafficking industry (Children of the Night [COTN], 2016d).
Have you ever walked into Wal-Mart and taken the time to look at the numerous pictures of missing youth that is plastered on the wall? When looking at how long they have been missing, it ranges anywhere from months to years. Looking at their age, both boys and girls, it is hard not to wonder if these kids are being trafficked. Child sex trafficking, also known as human trafficking, is a major issue that is not only plaguing the United States, but the world. Residing in a state where teen sex trafficking is very common, it is imperative that not only adults, but the youth understand what child sex/human trafficking is, what is a sex-trafficker, and the data that reveals the seriousness of child sex
Sex trafficking is a global problem that involves the exploitation and abuse of girls as well as women. This paper will discuss the problem, with an emphasis on the views expressed by Paola Monzini in her book Sex Traffic: Prostitution, Crime and Exploitation. The paper will look at the causes, consequences and prevalence rates of sex trafficking and will consider the impact of such factors as globalization and women’s poverty in perpetuating the problem or making it worse. The paper will conclude with a discussion of the ways in which a human rights perspective might translate into positive action to eliminate the trafficking of girls and women.
Images of foreign lands usually conjure up when the thoughts of human sex trafficking come to one 's mind. The United States of America is not immune to this type of horrific behavior. America is the land of the free and yet something as awful as human sex trafficking occurs in our very own backyard each and everyday. According to the Department of Homeland Security the definition of human trafficking is “modern day slavery that involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act” (“What Is Human Trafficking?”). In this research paper the reader will experience the savagery that comes with human sex trafficking and how it has expanded in the United States over recent years. Within this research
Recruiting victims is effective when the potential victim's family members are involved (Bales 44). The traffickers convince the girls to stay and keep their mouths shut by threatening to do serious harm to the victim's loved ones. The traffickers know where the victim's family lives and
Nothing drives emotions out the window more than hearing about innocent children being used for sex. In Cambodia, sex trafficking has grown into a troublesome issue. Sex trafficking has become one of the fastest growing crimes occurring internationally. It is the third largest crime-business in the world, after drugs and arms trafficking. Women, girls, and even men and boys are victims of the billion-dollar sex trafficking industry. Sex trafficking occurs everywhere, and it is not culturally specific, but a gender specific issue. There are numerous cases of sex trafficking within Cambodia, however child sex trafficking is extremely captivating and distressing to learn about.
The history of trafficking goes back much further than one would think. Donna Hughes explains in her article Combating Sex trafficking a history that trafficking really started in England as early as 1875. Even though this article suggests that human trafficking started as early as 1875, we have learned in class from the Sugar changed the world: a story of magic, spice, slavery, freedom, and science that it goes way further back than that. This movement in 1875 only affected women at the time. This is where the term prostitute was initially coined. Before World War I, the act of trafficking white slaves saw its first law called the international convention for suppression of the white slave traffic. It wasn’t until after World War II that
Throughout the 21st century, the number of human beings being capture and put into sex trafficking and prostitution has risen. In 2013, about 270,000 young boys, girls, and women were forced into human trafficking in the United States alone and estimated 20.9 million in the world. The UN has also estimated that nearly 4,000,000 are trafficked each year. UNICEF has estimated that as many as 50% of all trafficking victims worldwide are minors and that as many as two thirds of those adolescents are at some point forced into the sex trade. This is a 52 billion dollar industry. Two kids are sold every minute, 120 per hour. In other cases mothers of these children would sell them off for money due to financial reason, which

When some people hear the expression “child sex trafficking” inevitably unspeakable thoughts come to mind, others are unaware this is even happening. Sex trafficking is a serious criminal issue taking place within the borders of the United States, but on the outside of these boarders this crime stands as a reliable source of income for those who participate. Although child sex trafficking is a local crime it is obvious that multiple nations have different viewpoints on the topic. The problem at hand is meeting in the middle where this situation can exist without creating a riot with residents and eliminating the destruction of young children’s lives. Though this topic is a sensitive one, there are ways to allow it to coexist in everyday
The sex industry is rather large in Hungary and the majority of prostitutes who are called “sex workers” willingly participate in their act. There are many reasons why they choose this “occupation”. With the recent economic downturn numerous people were left without a job, and they need to act to survive. Most of these people decide to work as a prostitute, because the poverty level is high, they don't have opportunities to train for new jobs or their educational level is low to reach another level or society. The absolute majority strongly believe that their activity is merely a source
The research previously conducted on the topic of sex trafficking in the United States provided significant data to initiate this research process on awareness in suburban areas. When analyzing other survey data, it became apparent that there is a knowledge gap. Particularly when analyzing the data gathered from a survey conducted by the National Association of Counties (“The Problem of Human Sex Trafficking”). In this survey they asked individuals from different size counties if they believe sex trafficking is an issue in their county; there was a direct correlation between the size of the county and belief that it is an issue. The general trend was that the smaller the county, the more people believed it was not a problem. This is significant
). For women in poverty, barely making ends meet, while others prosper is a difficult reality to grasp. In assessing the traffic in women, a key issue is the limited economic choices that women living in absolute poverty have. Possible reasons why women are limited economically is that in Moldova there is a lot of pressure for them to stay home and care for the family. In turn, Moldova actually has a very high domestic abuse rate and this causes women to be stuck in aggressive relationships with no way out. Because they have had no job experience and no education they are presented with no real options in life, which leads to the issue of human trafficking. Survival strategies in such situations entail risks and harsh choices such as migration.
