Sandy Thomas, a journalist of Huffington Post, once stated, “Mainly this country hates women. Unless they are very tall, very beautiful and in close enough proximity to grope.” Thomas exemplifies the ideals of society towards women: the objects of men if they fit into their physical aspect of attractive. In the world, an abundance of women view themselves as ugly, deplorable, unvalued if they do not fit into society’s standards; thus, plentiful amount of men believe sexually advancements compliment them and bring up their self esteem. These thoughts create a state of mind which makes their actions excusable. Although sexual assault occurs more towards women, men experience sexually advancements from others too. The classification of sexual assault and sexual harassment contrast within the law. The Coastguard wrote in their article, “The real distinction between sexual harassment and sexual assault is sexual harassment’s connection to the victim’s employment and/or work performance… Sexual assault is a crime against another person” (COAST GUARD). Sexual advancement towards somebody can be classified into three different categories, one extreme being rape, the classifications allude to the importance of the topic. The differences in definition become blurred to the public and commonly miscategorized. Though both of the grotesque actions harm people, physically and emotionally; however, most perpetrators of these actions are not condemned. These actions, either sexual assault or sexual harassment, occur frequently and in familiar areas, yet many people do aknowledge its prominence. For example, RAINN provides statistics when they state, “Every two minutes an American is sexually assaulted. On average there are 288,820 (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year in the United States” (Victims of Sexual). The statistics given exemplify how actions of sexual assault occur in the country around us though the fact of it becomes hidden to the public. The majority of the public would prefer not to converse about the topic at hand, no matter if …show more content…
Media creates a storm with the revelation of a video of president elect Trump. Amy Wang, a journalist of the Washington Post, wrote, “Their conversation was caught on a hot microphone and included Trump's sentiments that he could kiss and touch women freely because he was "a star” (Wang). Many celebrities tend to believe of themselves to be above the law although we are all people; people who need to appreciate the boundaries between others no matter if you are famous. The fact of what your profession in and the amount of people who know you does not give you more rights than the lesser known; it does not allow you to create a permanent scar on somebody's emotion. Wang later stated, “Trump defended his comments as "locker-room banter" (Wang). The vulgar words should not be accepted to the public with the excuse “locker room banter,” a phrase commonly used. The excuse demonstrates how actions like Trumps become pushed aside and normalized within society. It creates an excuse which everyone can use to talk about harmful sexual actions or partake in the sexual action without thinking about the consequences to those affected. The consequences of Trump’s videos created a storm on social media. Thousands of people began to share their personal stories on social media of being sexually assaulted, many using the hashtag #NotOkay
Coming from a country in a part of the world where being misogynistic is incredibly prevalent and often encouraged, I have witnessed and been around many acts of sexual harassment as well as victims of it. At a very young age, I learned that my first cousin was sexually harassed by her husband’s brother when they were alone and that is when I learned the true horrors of the world. Everyone knew the truth about what happened, but no one helped my cousin, not her husband, her father, or her brothers. Sadly, Where I’m from, a third world country, is not the only place things like this happen. There are acts of sexual harassment even in countries like America in big corporations such as Hollywood. We’ve learned about these many acts through recent
Within the Entertainment Industry - theatre being a part of that - sexual assault and sexual harassment happens so often people hate to admit it. Thus, our piece will showcase both a male and female victim stressing that these issues can just as easily happen to a male as well; it goes beyond feminism. Throughout the piece the two victims will be reciting a monologue together and in parts displaying this sharing of a story and/or stories. Last week, the White House released a short, celebrity packed, 60-second public service announcement (PSA) on the topic of sexual assault. 1 is 2 Many addressed those who are in control of preventing sexual assault as its intended audience was those who can put a stop to sexual violence: the perpetrators or would-be offenders. Although this one minute announcement completed the task of bringing sexual assault to the forefront of discussion, it failed to encompass the central issues concerning the culture of sexual assault: societal misperceptions, the victims, and the justice system. Sexual assault is a phenomenon that has been around for centuries; the culture of sexual assault is rooted in both legal practices and societal perceptions.
Throughout the 1840’s and 1850’s a growing tension developed between the Northern and Southern states of America. That tension was primarily focused on the existence of slavery in the Southern states. Most Northern states had abolished slavery by 1850 and made a promise to the people to end slavery completely. They wanted the South to begin to become similar to the North, and to live under the concept of free labor, and not rely on slavery for productivity. The resentment for the interference of the North angered southerners because they felt that it was not the place of the federal government to interfere. Ever since the American Revolution sectional differences arose, the first being those favoring greater states rights and those
“I thought it was a progressive school. I thought the resources they advertised from the beginning were real resources I could count on. I felt even more betrayed when they failed me and then refused to acknowledge my earnest desires and pleas for them to evaluate what was happening to me” said Emma Sulkowicz, a student at Columbia University who was sexually assaulted and protested the lack of punishment the man who attacked her received by carrying around a 50 pound mattress, of her frustrations and disappointments towards her university (qtd. in Kim). The FBI says that rape is the second most serious crime, after murder (Mantel). Sadly, about twenty to twenty five percent of women will experience some form of sexual assault during the time
The New York Times article “What Experts Know About Men Who Rape,” author Heather Murphy focuses on the commonalities in the men who commit sexual assaults. Murphy states that the similarities don’t fall into traditional demographic categories. Studies find that men begin assaulting early in life, may associate with others who commit sexual violence, and typically deny that they have raped women even though they admit to having nonconsensual sex. Identifying these traits could help stop future assaults.
Rape has become a huge crime in the U.S. Most rapes are not reported; therefore many of the offenders never spend a day in prison. It has become a huge issue for women because now every time they go out they have to think of the things that may happen to them. They have to think about the way that they are dressed; if the clothes they are wearing are a little too revealing and may provoke sex offenders or rapists. But women are not the only ones who need to be aware of sex offenders. Men can be sexually harassed and raped as well. Many may not believe that rape happens, but it does, more often than you think. Somewhere in the United States, someone is getting sexually harassed every
Rarely does the media offer how the victim tried to defend against the aggressive act, but it quickly allows those accused to state no assault occurred, merely a miscommunication. Celebrities and song artists using rape culture and sexual assault as a way to further their career diminishes society 's concern when attacks occur. Today’s generation typically decides as a whole whether or not the statement or event categorizes as offensive or immoral, leading to not only the victims but individuals attempting to raise awareness to be told their views are invalid.
up to 14 years imprisonment; and aggravated sexual assault – victim is wounded, disfigured or life is in endanger – is level 3 which is punishable by up to life imprisonment (Brennan & Taylor-Butts, 2008: 7). Moreover, because of this new amendment, questions about survivor’s past sexual history and sexual reputation are now restricted. The word ‘rape’ was taken out and replaced with sexual assault. The purpose for changing the terminology was to obviate the moral stigma associated with the word 'rape'. This also supported the fact that men could also be victimized because penetration was not required in order to prove the sexual assault. Now both men and women are given rights to equal treatment under the law (Handbook, 2007:4-5).
Sexual harassment is discrimination that involves any uninvited comments, exploits, or behavior regarding sex, gender, or sexual orientation. If any type of violation is made by a co-worker, a boss, a work acquaintance, or even a non-employee such as a client, vendor, or contractor, this will be considered unlawful sexual harassment within the work environment. Sexual harassment can create a hostile and uneasy work environment. Sexual harassment includes inappropriate verbal advances, unwelcomed physical behavior that creates an aggressive, hostile, intimidating or malicious work environment for employees. Sexual harassment includes sending suggestive e-mails, notes, and
The definition of sexual assault is often blurred in today’s society, as the rate of these cases increases rapidly this simple definition seems as if it should be known. In reality defining a specific event or act as sexual assault can be very difficult because of the many situations and different accusations that arise throughout the large number of complicated cases. To reduce the number of these sometimes gruesome cases, there needs to be a goal to look toward while working to reduce this crime. These situations occur for reasons unexplainable to many, but there are certain things that lead to the increased number of sexual assaults. Sexual references sell. Sexuality is advertised more than any other system of persuasion when attempting to sell a product. This does not pertain to the product being sold, in all honesty the product is irrelevant to consumers. The one and only thing that matters to the consumer is the way the item is being advertised, and the most common way of advertising is in a sexual context. This ultimately has a faint place in the increase of sexual assault cases because of subliminal advertising and messaging. Subliminal messages are used to pass the normal lines of perception, and they are usually not detected by the conscious mind but are perceived by the unconscious and deeper mind. This could easily play a role in the increase of sexual assault cases throughout the country, which is most evident in college students because of the large amount of
Sexual harassment law should cover same-sex heterosexual harassment. Any inappropriate behavior from a supervisor or colleague that mortifies or embarrasses someone and affects with their work performance should be considered sexual harassment regardless of the gender. When sexual harassment laws were adopted they originally written to protect women in the work place but over the year’s men have needed to utilize these rights. Same-sex sexual harassment is not just male/male but can also be female/female issues. Who is to say men are the only ones to harass others? In my opinion, it is backwards to say only women can be sexually
As seen in the case study, a court decision may be one way for any company to legally define what constitutes sexual harassment in the workplace, but there are many ways to define sexual harassment. Everyone has different views and tolerance levels towards sexual harassment. When a case of sexual harassment occurs in a workplace, however, it comes down to how the courts define sexual harassment. The Supreme Court defines sexual harassment to be unlawful in two ways. “The first type involves sexual harassment that results in a tangible employment action;” this is referred to as quid pro quo. For example, if an employee complies with the harasser’s request, then she will get a raise. This unlawful act is usually presented in the workplace by a person who has an upper hand, such as a manager, to ensure that s/he will get what s/he wants. Employees are often victimized by fear that they will not get promoted or that they will get fired. They also dread that if a complaint is filed, it will not be handled correctly. “This instance of sexual harassment always involves another violation of employee rights; [sic] wrongful termination.” This would occur, for instance, when “a supervisor . . . tells a subordinate that . . . she must be sexually cooperative with [him] or . . . she will be fired, and who then indeed does fire the subordinate for not submitting” (“U.S. Supreme Court Defines”). There are federal laws put in position to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Most employees sometimes don’t even realize what sexual harassment is are when they are committing this violation. On the flip side an employee may not realized when they are being sexually harassed and when is the appropriate time to speak up. Education on sexual harassment has increased within the workplace as cases are more public and fines are getting steeper.
