Sexual orientation is an enduring pattern of romantic or sexual attraction to persons of the opposite sex or gender, the same sex or gender, or to both sexes and more than one gender. There are four different categories of sexual orientation: asexual, bisexual, heterosexual and homosexual. Someone that identifies with an asexual orientation has a lack of sexual attraction to others. A bisexual is someone that has a sexual attraction to members of both sexes whereas a heterosexual is someone that has a sexual attraction to members of the opposite gender. One can have homosexual tendencies but not be sexually attracted to members of their own gender.
Homosexuality can be tracked throughout history. In ancient Rome, philosophers, such as Socrates, were having sexual practices with their students. They believed it was a part of becoming a man. The Bible discusses homosexual practices that took place in Sodom and Gomorrah. Some of the most influential people throughout history have been discovered to be homosexual: Susan B. Anthony, William Shakespeare, Leonardo Da Vinci and Tennessee Williams. Homosexuality is worldwide. It knows no boundaries or cultures and has had a global impact on society. The homosexual society has their own international flag, a rainbow that signifies the bond between different people all over the world. The global impact that homosexuals have on society is the reason for researching their behavior and determining what may cause their sexual orientation.
The gay personality has long been a scrutinized myth. Many psychologists have described homosexuality as a mental disorder or a treatable complex. However, recently homosexuality was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and is no longer considered a disorder. The American Psychiatric Association believes that “the causes of sexual orientation (whether homosexual or heterosexual) are not known at this time and likely are multifactorial
