SGA, a hosiery company, is being aggressively courted by the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU). With the down turn of the hosiery industry, SGA has had to make changes such as laying off people, reducing pay and benefits and other perks the employees were given over the many years when their company was more profitable. Now the company is looking at the possibility of a vote for unionizing. The union has been very aggressive in the workplace and the surrounding areas. While the leaders of the company do not want a union, the employees will have the final say, leaving the president of SGA in a very difficult situation. The possibility of having to close down the company if they become unionized is a very strong threat. …show more content…

If handled correctly a letter is a great way of handing out information. However, the letter that was written could violate the Fair Labor act by threatening job security and possible other actions as seen fit by the president. In the article, “Unfair labor practices”, the writer lists examples of unfair practices and says, “Examples of employer conduct that violate the NLRA: Threatening to close the business or facility if employees select a union to represent them (Unfair labor practices, 2011).” SGA has to be careful. Also, another way to get the company’s agenda out to everyone without any cost to the company is the use of social media. Keep in mind though, the same rules apply and the company needs to be respectful of the law. While some employees will never be happy, if enough employees see that the company is working for them and trying to do right by them, the need for a union could be eliminated in their minds. The union needs to be made to look as a useless entity and the company needs to be looked as a family and be a cohesive group of members working together to get to the same end goal. As Budd says his book, “The use of outside union avoidance consultants and lawyers is a prominent component of employers’ campaigns (Budd, 2013).” SGA would be wise to also use these people to help his company remain
