SGA, a hosiery company, is being aggressively courted by the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU). With the down turn of the hosiery industry, SGA has had to make changes such as laying off people, reducing pay and benefits and other perks the employees were given over the many years when their company was more profitable. Now the company is looking at the possibility of a vote for unionizing. The union has been very aggressive in the workplace and the surrounding areas. While the leaders of the company do not want a union, the employees will have the final say, leaving the president of SGA in a very difficult situation. The possibility of having to close down the company if they become unionized is a very strong threat. …show more content…
If handled correctly a letter is a great way of handing out information. However, the letter that was written could violate the Fair Labor act by threatening job security and possible other actions as seen fit by the president. In the article, “Unfair labor practices”, the writer lists examples of unfair practices and says, “Examples of employer conduct that violate the NLRA: Threatening to close the business or facility if employees select a union to represent them (Unfair labor practices, 2011).” SGA has to be careful. Also, another way to get the company’s agenda out to everyone without any cost to the company is the use of social media. Keep in mind though, the same rules apply and the company needs to be respectful of the law. While some employees will never be happy, if enough employees see that the company is working for them and trying to do right by them, the need for a union could be eliminated in their minds. The union needs to be made to look as a useless entity and the company needs to be looked as a family and be a cohesive group of members working together to get to the same end goal. As Budd says his book, “The use of outside union avoidance consultants and lawyers is a prominent component of employers’ campaigns (Budd, 2013).” SGA would be wise to also use these people to help his company remain
As a member of management Clive Jenkins is responsible for boosting employee morale to ensure that company goals are met
Members of management of a company whose employees are attempting to organize cannot, by law, join a union. Once preliminary organizing begins and during the election campaign, employers have certain rights and responsibilities, as mandated by the NLRB. The employer may lawfully limit campaign activities that occur on company property, if it has a legitimate reason to do so. Employers may also limit places where solicitation may occur, limit time during which solicitation may take place, and limit access to the workplace by any outsider. Employers may limit distribution of union
I visited the Communications Workers of America (CWA) website, https://www.cwa-union.org/ to find out some more information. What I discovered were statements about how the union will help with negotiating wages, benefits, and safety. The CWA states that they will not only handle the basic employment negotiations, but they also provide services to help with further education, and employee

If management were to control union operation within the workplace, unions could be eradicated all together as they pose a threat to management being able to make all decisions affecting the workers using their managerial prerogative.
From this perspective, trade union is perceived not necessary and the role of it is creating conflict, and it is seen an unwelcome intrusion into the organization from outside competing with management for the loyalty of employees (Rose, 2004). Trade unions exist either as the result of wickedness or perverseness of individual employees, or because of a failure of management to anticipate and incorporate worker needs and concerns (Bray, Deery, Walsh and Waring, 2005).
The role of management and unions in society today is to protect the employee. The management team needs to make sure she/he is treating the employee fairly, needs to provide a good work environment. If management fails to do a good job and the employee feels discriminated, treated unfairly, feels discontent for different reason, management does not want the union to get involved, they feel respect for unions and will do whatever it takes to make their team happy. This is why so many companies have employee parties, employee recognitions, etc.
Wednesday on, the Labor Department announced a final edition of its conténtious "persuader" rule. Persuaders are consultants and lawyers hired by companies to discourage employees from unionizing. The art -- subtle sometimes, not -- is called "union avoidance sometimes." Unions, though, have a far more derisive term for this: union-busting.

The case study focuses on an employee, Paul Keller, who is being affected by a number of factors. His job performance is hindered by constraints such as his work environment, his home environment, stressors, mood, and the management style of his superior. The case study demonstrates how his job performance is affected and what the consequences could be as a result of his poor job performance and lack of concentration.
Opposition from Unions in different subsidiaries against the layoff could cause serious problems like high severance package and possible strikes
History shows that there has been conflict of power within the workforce between union and management. This essay will discuss if management should have the right to determine whether a union should operate within their workplace. It is necessary first to discuss the roles of unions and management in the workplace and discuss both points of view on the power distribution between unions and management in the workplace.
The company needs to get the employees on board and support them. The staff do not seem to think the company has their best needs on board and are looking to join the Unite trade union, which the company does not recognise. Trade Unions are not there just to protect their members in matters against their
