Environment is the Key to a Healthy Life It has often been said that the environment we are in can have a positive or negative affect on our lives. In the novels Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz, the protagonist of each book are from a distinct ethnic and cultural backgrounds. While one might think that it is that background that would shape the events that took place in these stories, it is often something different all together. In addition to their ethnic backgrounds, they all grew up in certain environments that were actually the driving forces of their lives. For Rory in Girlchild, she was in an environment that …show more content…
“There were so many ghosts in our house— the ghost of my brother, the ghost of my fathers war, the ghost of my sisters voices. And I thought that maybe there were ghosts inside of me that I hadn’t even met yet. They were there. Lying in waiting” (Sáenz 93). His parents didn’t open up to him about many things, but when they did Ari enjoyed it “I liked when my mom told me about how she felt about things” (Sáenz 92). I think, this is because it showed him that it was okay for him to express how he was feeling about things. He was raised in an environment where expressing yourself did not exist, therefore he kept everything inside of him. “Dad? You know what I’ve learned from you and mom? I’ve learned to not talk. I’ve learned how to keep everything I feel buried deep inside of me. And I hate you for it” (Sáenz 260). Ari even acknowledges that this is what his parents taught him, and when his father did finally open up to him, about his brother and the war only then was he able to see the true feeling he had for Dante, that was buried deep down inside him just like a
In this section the author talks about the way of conducting the study which is the basis of this book. She has chosen a total of twelve families including six white, five black and one interracial. All the families had children who aged from 9-10 years. She visited these families at least twenty times in a time span of a month and spend time around the space where their everyday lives evolve.
From an anthropological point of view, people would strongly suggest that surroundings heavily influence how a person acts and feels. Culture and environment help define who people are as human beings. The knowledge, rules, and values a person obtains adds to how they evolve. What is most important is whether a person grows to be a functional valued member of society or not. In the book, The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline, the main protagonist, Frenchie, a sixteen year old goes through many situations that influence how he acts and feels.
Social location, or the status in life that people have because of their place in a society, have a huge impact on everyone. The impact that social location created could be neutral, but most of the time it will have a positive or negative impact on people. For example, an African American could be discriminated because of his ethnicity, or a patient will choose an older doctor when he needs a treatment. Different social location that we have will affect our decisions in everyday life, and most of the time it happened subconsciously, which means we don’t realize that the decisions we make are based on our social location. Like everyone else, I was affected by my own social location, both positively and negatively.
Child development is the genetic and internal changes that occur in children during early years. There are many internal and external factors that affect a child 's growth and development. The connection between a child’s environment and a child’s development are explored in Heather O 'Neill 's lullabies for little criminals where a child named Baby becomes a product of her environment. This is explored through the early death of Baby’s mother, her being raised by a young father and her father 's drug addiction. Baby’s bad decisions and choices come from a lack of guidance necessary for a child’s social growth and development.
In St Lucy’s girls raised by wolves by Karen Russell. Some wolf girls got taken to school to learn to be human. Some of the girls were able to change and graduate and some did not graduate. In the passage Mirabella was not able to adapt to the human environment. She was mean, selfish, and crazy. Have you ever known someone who didn’t try hard enough to pass?
“...Successes are far more likely to come from wealthier families.” This quote from Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell goes hand in hand with another controversial quote in the same book. “Who we are cannot be separated from where we’re from.” Every human comes from some background, we all have parents and a birth-town, as well as an income we grew up living off of. Yet do these background have a significant influence on the course of our lives?
Though some people might say it depends on the person, the environment people are placed in actually has a tremendous effect on what type of person one becomes. To begin with, the book Kindred is about a girl named Dana, a black women, who lives in 1976 and goes back in time to the 1800’s. Having to now live in the
Growing up, a individual is influenced by one’s parents, friends, and the environment that surrounds them.
One’s family’s history, culture and environmental factors can influence a great deal of who they are. In fact, all three of these factors have influenced a great deal of the young woman I am today. To begin with, I am an African-American woman of Haitian descent. My family immigrated from Haiti years before I was born seeking a better life. I grew up in a close-knit family that worked odd jobs to reach ends meet. I remember fondly, my mother, a single mother working three jobs struggling to put food on the table, clothes on me and my three sibling’s backs, and electricity in the house. My mother never had time to rest, enjoy her day or spend time with me or my siblings. We often took cold showers, and had many hungry nights. Due to the amount
Without any credit, the environment leads people to make choices that shape their lives and thoughts. Even though people might have similar backgrounds it doesn 't mean that they share the same opinions. Everyone carries a different opinion of a stranger in his/her mind depending upon there past encounters with strangers. This is evident in the works of Toni Morrison and James Baldwin.
The most important part of growing up involves the lasting impacts your environment has made in shaping who you are. It also helps define what kind of person you will grow up to be one day. Each person’s social environment has an impact on the way they perceive themselves. Yet someone environment contributes tremendously in who they are. Growing up in a hard-working Catholic family, excluding the fact that we’ve moved around a little bit, my environment has helped me become stronger and more independent. Yet, I have learned that people, most of the time, not only get influenced by their environment, but they also become one with that environment. After consistently going to church on Sundays, I have developed important Christian values that have structured my identity now. I have also learned that life isn’t always good to you, but only you
Man is a product of the culture in which he is born and brought up. For the same reason, no one can negate the influence of the society in forming one’s personality. I am well aware of the fact that my views, thoughts, and attitude have been shaped by the society I live in; hence, any attempt to sketch my personal experiences would be incomplete without referring to the part played by my surroundings. Throughout my life, I have paid utmost importance to initiating and maintaining interpersonal relationships with others. I had to face varied situations out there, both joyous and depressing. However, each instance was a great lesson for me to learn several things about my practical life – I wouldn’t be exaggerating when I say that I have learned more outside the four walls of my classroom than within them. My autobiography is closely associated with my social connections including my experiences with my family, educational institution, and the larger society I reside within.
“Rappaccini’s Daughter,” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a short story about how beauty is within and not just physical. When Hawthorne was four years old his father was in an accident and died on the scene, leaving his mother to raise him and his siblings alone. Thus, leading him to have respect for all women, and it is reflected in the story. For instance, the main character Beatrice is this aesthetic, sweet, and a naïve woman and Giovanni is just focused more on her beauty rather than anything else. Moreover, when Giovanni first sees Beatrice in the garden, he describes her as the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen and is just blinded by her beauty. What he doesn’t know is that her father, Doctor Rappaccini, is a scientist who cares more about science more than anything else. The place where Beatrice and Giovanni spend all their time together is in the garden, which represents loneliness’, and unfortunately one of the main characters will learn that the hard way. When Giovanni meets Professor Baglioni, a professor of medicine—who is Rappaccini’s rival— he helps him get Beatrice, or at least that’s what Giovanni thinks. However, what Giovanni does not know is that “the love of his life” isn’t who he thinks she is.
Humans are unique creatures simply due to the fact that every person grows up in a different environment. I know for a fact that the way I grew up is different compared to the way my friends grew up, and it is different compared to how others grew up and will grow up in the past and future. This paper covers the subject of sociocultural context, what it is, how it can impact a child, and how it impacted my own development.
“I’ve learned that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are.” These were the words of a poet, Omer B. Washington. However, they would only apply in
