The Battle of Shiloh, or the Battle of Pittsburg Landing was fought on April 6 and 7, 1862 in southwestern Tennessee. It was a surprise attack on the Union led by Albert Sidney Johnston, as the Union was waiting for more troops to come in from Ohio. The first day of the battle didn't look to good for the Union. They lost so many men that day, and they decided to stop fighting for the night and continue in the morning. The Union was led by Ulysses S. Grant and he was leading about 66,000 soldiers. The confederate only had 47,000 soldiers fighting. The battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest battle of the Civil war. I am currently fighting the Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. We are located in Southwestern Tennessee. General Ulysses S. Grant has been moving us, the north, to gain control over more land. we fighting to free slavery and i am more than honored to be here. If i had the chance to switch sides i would not. Previous to this battle we had fought our way to many victories.The union had gained control over Kentucky and most of Tennessee. On April 6, 1862 we tried to gain control over the Tennessee river, we did not succeed. We were moved back two miles and preparing to attack again. We were once weak until we met up with General Buell’s army. This allowed us to make a very surprising counterattack the next morning.

Throughout the story Mason is focused on the persistency of grief, the instability of gender roles, along with the distance and lack of communication separating Leroy and Norma Jean from each other. Pittsburg Landing was an area from where the Yankees planned to attack the Confederates who had moved from Fort Donelson to Corinth, Mississippi. The North was commanded by General Ulysses S. Grant and the South by General Albert Sydney Johnston.

The battle was about two weeks long also it had about 20 hours of continuous hand-to-hand combat on May 12th to the 13th. About 18,000 Union and 11,000 Confederate soldiers died.
The second phase of the Battle of Shiloh starts as reinforcements from General Buell’s Army of the Ohio and a unit of Grant’s own reserve division joined the Union Army now positioned at Pittsburg Landing. These reinforcements added over 22,500 men to the Union lines13 bringing the total number of Union forces to over 45,000, which is more than they had on 6 April, the first day of fighting.14 On April 7, General Grant renewed the fighting with an aggressive counteract.15 Greatly outnumbered (Confederate forces now around 25,000) and disorganized the Confederate forces now under General Beauregard fought hard but eventually had to retreat to back Corinth.16 The second phase of the Battle of Shiloh was won by General Grant and his Union forces due to two main reasons. The first, Union troop numbers greatly outnumbered their enemy, over 45,000 to 25,000 respectively. And secondly, the reinforcements received by General Grant had not fought the day before and were fresh and excited to fight, unlike the exhausted remaining Confederate troops.17 This was the bloodiest battle fought on American soil up to that point, with 23,746 casualties (Union: 13,047; Confederate: 10,699).18 The Union lost more men but claimed the victory because the Confederate Army retreated back to Corinth, Mississippi.

The Battle of Shiloh consisted of a two day battle, resulting in a win for the Union. In the beginning, Confederate troops pushed the Union soldiers back trying to confine them against the Tennessee River. The Confederates chances of victory diminished as more army men appeared, followed by the death of Johnston, who was a Confederate General who held strong during the Battle of Fort Sumter.
The capture of this vital southern city was a huge blow to the Confederacy. In early 1862, the Confederates concentrated their forces in northern Mississippi and western Tennessee to prevent the Yankee invasion. Many of these troops fought at Shiloh in Tennessee on April 6 and 7. Eight Rebel gunboats were dispatched up the great river to stop a Union flotilla above Memphis, leaving only 3,000 militia, two uncompleted ironclads, and a few steamboats to defend New Orleans. The most imposing obstacles for the Union were two forts, Jackson and St. Philip. In the middle of the night of April 24, Admiral David Farragut led his troops in a daring run past the forts.
The battle of Fort Sumter took place in South Carolina near Charleston, April 12-14,186,. The fort was located in the middle of the harbor . This was the starting battle on the war. In the beginning Confederate batteries opened fire on the fort, and continued for 34 hours. The Union couldn't keep up, until on Saturday April 13 they surrendered the fort. During the war there were no deaths from either side, although during the surrender there was an explosion that caused 2 union deaths. The battle was fought in Virginia miles from DC; on July 21st. 60 thousand troops were engaged, 28,450 Union troops and 32,230 Confederate troops. 460 Union troops were killed, 1,124 were wounded and 1,312 went missing or were captured. 387 Confederate troops were killed, 1,582 wounded and 13 went missing or were captured. Irvin McDowell led the Union and Joseph E. Johnston and P. G. T. Beauregard led the Confederates. In the end the Confederates won with the Union retreat.
