Have you ever heard someone tell you the old witty saying that “life has its ups and downs”? If so, then you know that there are many obstacles to overcome throughout your life. Humanity is one barrier that you will overcome that plays an important role in today’s society. In “Shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell, the essay explores going against Orwell’s own humanity of the effects of his role in the British army stationed in Burma. Humanity is defined as the quality or state of being kind to other people or to animals. Every day, individuals are making decisions from the influences that are around us. Today, the technology is rapidly increasing, making the everyday tasks much simpler to complete. Science and medicine has been a major development that has helped the lives of many people. “As more and more people around the world acquire education, understanding of science has become much more widespread. Thanks to the relatively new sciences of sociology, anthropology, and psychology, our understanding of human nature and society has developed rapidly” (humanism). One example is when the police officer did not want to kill the elephant, but it was his duty as an officer. “A police officer kills the elephant through his conscience because the Indians socially pressurized him greatly” (essay mania). The people of Burma wanted the animal gone because it was being a nuisance to the whole town. Lastly, although the police officer did not believe in killing the elephant, the entire town had ordered it to be done. He felt a great deal of sadness… “But I did not want to shoot the elephant. It seemed to me that it would be murder to shoot him”
