Short Speech On Cosmetology

I have chosen cosmetology as my research career. This career particularly interest me because it is something I would like to do with my life. I feel this career is filled with opportunities that can be very beneficial to me financially and emotionally. One specific goal I have in my life is to one day open my own salon.

Going through cosmetology school gave you the expertise you need to cut and style hair. People come to you because you make them look and feel their best. Unfortunately, you never know when an accident can happen, and no amount of training or professionalism can prevent every mishap. Cosmetology is the general work on others hair and skin. The area of cosmetology I am going for is hair. I find working on other people’s hair fun and interesting. Makeup and nails are other areas of interest for me. I am going to be studying cosmetology to become licensed as an entrepreneur for hair, makeup, and helping to make the lives of others better. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or training, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.

​Every since I was a child I have had a passion for doing other people’s hair. When I was little I would use my baby dolls as clients and work on their hair until it was perfect and neat. I have chosen to be in the cosmetology field because I like to help other people with their needs and wants as well as mine. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Many people go to cosmetology school to work for someone else, but I would like to open up a mini-salon out of my own home someday.

Cosmetology is the “study or art in cosmetics and their use”. Cosmetology is a broad term that includes hair, make up, skin, and nails (Cosmetology Careers and Cosmetology Education Information 14 Oct. 2014). Cosmetology is not only for women, but for men and children too (What Is Cosmetology 14 Oct. 2014). Cosmetologist helps to change their customer’s physical appearance by doing their hair, nails, or giving them facials to help their skin (Education Portal 12 Oct 2014). Some cosmetologist work out of their homes or in small shops and others work in salons or spas (What Is Cosmetology 10 Oct. 2014).

Cosmetology is the study and art of hairstyling, nail technology, and esthetics. A few other subjects a cosmetology student focuses on in beauty school are, professional image, infection control, and life skills. The word cosmetology comes from the greek word kosmetikos, which translates to skilled in the use of cosmetics. The practice of cosmetology has been dated to as early as the Ice Age. Before makeup brushes and other tools were invented, people used sharpened flints, oyster shells, and bone. The pigments used to enhance one's face at that time, were made from berries, tree bark, minerals, insects, nuts, herbs, leaves, and other materials. (Milady 6)

Many people wonder what is needed to become that successful good paid cosmetologist. Society sometimes think men are not suited for a cosmetology career; little do they know that is not true. A man who was not ashamed of the job which they called a woman’s job would be Paul Mitchell. In the cosmetology industry what is mainly needed is patience, which would be the best skill for this career. Cosmetologists do not only handle hair, but many more parts of the body. A career in cosmetology is based on professional skill or practice of beautifying the face, skin, and hair; therefore one needs to know the safety requirements in using many different chemicals, job description, salary, and benefits to work in this career.

Some schools post to their websites about current positions that are available at salons that they have a business relationship with. This keeps the salon in the “lime light”. Sanitation and safety are a very big part in the training of becoming a cosmetologist in Tennessee. I must have 1500 hours of training before I can take the written or physical exams. A cosmetologist is a person that is trained to care for people's skin, hair, nails, safety, and sanitation.  Cosmetologists can also referred as beauticians. To become a cosmetologist, a person will have to attend a beauty school/cosmetology school, to learn the techniques required. These techniques are, but not limited to hair cutting, perming, coloring, nails, and makeup as well as waxing. In order to get a license, a person will need to pass the board exam after they have completed cosmetology school. Each state has different requirements in order to pass, these differences include how many hours of school needed before taking the exam. Each class can take between 9 to 15 months to finish, depending on if a person chooses full or part time.

Cosmetology is the study and application of beauty treatment. Branches of specialty includes hairstyling, skin care, cosmetics, manicures/pedicures. And a Fine Artists are artists that include painters, sculptors, and illustrators. In fine arts I would be doing painting/ body painting. For schooling I would love to go to University of Arizona or Eastern Arizona Collage. I have wanted to go to U of Arizona since I was 10. Eastern Arizona Collage offers the cosmetology class I need and University of Arizona has the Fine arts class I need. A lot of people have an interest in arts or something of the field. But the whole arts, makeup, and hair has been my escape from reality when ever I'm having a hard time at school or even in life. I've been doing (cutting and coloring) my own hair and doing my own makeup for 4 years. I have done other peoples hair and makeup before and gotten nothing but positive feed back. School will cost money so, I am going to be applying for scholarships.

Growing up I always use to like doing my hair, as well as my mothers and sisters hair. I began to do my own hair for school at the age of nine. About six months before I graduated high school, I participated in a fundraiser to support breast cancer /scholarship contest at Aveda Institute, which is a cosmetology school. I saw many creative and talented students at the event, it was amazing! I assumed it was a sign, so as soon as I graduated high school I registered at Aveda. I truly believed that cosmetology was what I wanted to make a career out of, because I enjoy making people feel more confident about their physical appearance. However, attending the institute emphatically demonstrated a sneak preview of what life had in store for me.

Hairstylist is a job that will never have a dull moment. You learn something new every day. This is a career I would enjoy doing every day. You get to meet so many new people and help them with so many different things. Even though the money isn’t good, if you love the job, it’s a job for
